We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A good word, of course. I see, in our morning links, MoDo used it to describe the O's temperament. What does she mean, exactly? Is "languid" racist? I certainly think so. Or is it a comment on his testosterone level? Like he's not, well, you know. I see he is off to vacation again today. Sheesh. But I understand. Martha's Vineyard is exhausting. Been there a few times. Pleasant and civilized, but certainly exhausting.
I am enjoying a languid final day of a 2-week vacation, watching the tennis this afternoon accompanied by She Who Must Be Obeyed and some chilled adult beverages in full White Privileged American manner. Burgers on the grill in a while. Back to school tomorrow. Non labore, non mangiare, or mangia, or however they say it to the animals - but not to the people - in Italia.
Barrister... Maybe the word Languid can be termed racist, but it's a stretch. Myself, I prefer to dub Obama as lazy, a word selected by the law professors at the University of Chicago to describe him. They were annoyed, since he was only a lowly adjunct lecturer, that he refused to attend the faculty meetings which he was expected to do.
Actually, he has often been lazy. Rather than study at all for the job of President of the United States, he has faked it -- is still faking it. That's why he is still under the erroneous impression that the Executive is the top position in our government, rather than co-equal with the Senate, the House and the Supreme Court. Because he hasn't thought this out clearly, he is constantly making irritating incorrect decisions, like ordering both houses of Congress to report for duty on the 7th, so he can come and lecture them on his great plans for us anxious citizens. You know, it would embarrass me terribly if I had held a job for more than two years and still hadn't figured out what I was supposed to be doing.
Apparently it doesn't bother him. It's Bush's fault, you see.
I agree with Marianne, languid means lazy. And Clearly(!!!) that's RAAAAACIST!!!!!11!!!!! because we all know, in our hearts of hearts, he's (whisper it now) "black". Dang I'm glad I can now call MoDo out for the raaaaaacist she is.
"Languid" is a value-neutral term, I would say. "Lazy" to me implies a character fault, a failure to get after what needs to be done, and I acknowledge that I fall into that.
"Languid" to me simply says I am at rest or moving slowly toward a goal. One of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes strips ends with Calvin saying, "At least when I have a day off I can tell the difference." I have embraced that.
