Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Top secret

At Forbes via Minding The Campus:



One of best-kept secrets in college admissions this coming year is that many top state universities will be admitting more out-of-state applicants than they ever have.


This opens up a whole new group of schools that were formerly much more difficult to get into.  We’re talking about great schools , sometimes lots more openings, and for a few campuses, slightly easier academic standards!



Cheaper, too.

Many years ago, I got a job at Ohio State, which was then open admissionsnto Ohio HS graduates. I have often thought that OSUs conversion to selective admissions was a betrayal of Ohio's people.

The drive to be a research institute served the ambitions of the OSU administration and faculty, but not the ambitions of the people of Ohio.

I hope OSU is not sacrificing Ohio students just to get more money. However, I am fearful.

Ohio State (Zero State if you please) has betrayed the citizens of Ohio, but not w/ selective admissions. They did it by purposely denigrating the other in-state institutions. Bringing Miami U and U Cincy down does not bring OSU up. Yes, they're more level now, but not to the benefit of the state's residents and businesses.

They also did it w/ their open admissions. This was fuel for the education bubble, as demand went up, costs went up for individuals, costs went up for businesses, but the value went down w/ low academic standards.

As for the higher admission rates for out-of-state residents, this truly is a betrayal of each state's citizens. Citizens who had their tax dollars taken w/ the explicit promise that there would be an affordable university for their kids to attend.

Instead, state universities are playing musical chairs, accepting students from other states (at higher tuition rates) leaving in-state residents to return the favor and send their kids to those other states (at similar higher tuition rates).

It's outright theft.
