Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, August 21. 2011Racism!At Q&O re Herman Cain as Uncle Tom, Who is the “racist” here?:
I have always contended that Repubs (and their allied Conservatives and Libertarians) are the non-racist party. It's the party of Lincoln, the part of Ike who desegrated the army, and the party whose support was essential in passing the Civil Rights legislation of the 1960s against a large segment of Dems. I have always contended that the Left is the racist party in viewing American blacks as a helpless, feckless, childish category of people, a permanent victim underclass destined to eternal dependence on government actions and benefits and the beneficence of white Libs who want to take care of them, like pets. That's the "plantation" people talk about. In my view, this is a deeply condescending and insulting way of viewing any group of people. People like Tom Sowell, Herman Cain, Mayor Nutter, Bill Cosby, Juan Williams, Shelby Steele, and many others agree with this. Fact is, before WW2 there was a vast (although often segregated) black middle class in America, church-going, hard-working, self-respecting, etc. The disruption of the black family during the war (large numbers of black men moving north for high-paying industrial jobs), combined with the Great Society's enabling and supporting of family dissolution, have been the real problems. Young single motherhood under unstable and poor (due to the singleness) conditions are the obvious problem, and everybody knows it. No amount of money can fix a subculture like that. Of course, there are still large numbers of middle-class blacks in America. However white Liberals, in their hypersensitive yet condescending way, are phobic about speaking about the self-destructive black subculture (even though there are poor white subcultures which are no different, and can be found anywhere), in the US as in the UK (vid h/t SDA):
(This woman has chosen government as her husband. She does not seem too bright, but is clearly gaming the system. What that piece ignores is how many entry-level jobs in the UK are eagerly taken by ambitious and entrepreneurial immigrants. "There are no jobs" because somebody else got to them first, or convinced somebody to create them. Same thing in the US: the Hispanic immigrants around here work their butts off, and are not too proud to get their hands dirty. Nobody has a job handed to them on a silver platter.) So even though the US is probably the least racist nation on earth, it seems necessary to the Left to keep the racism meme alive - even with a black president. Otherwise, they'd have to talk about the truth of the (possibly insoluble) problem of underclass dysfunction and exploitation of assistance - regardless of skin tone. Free money. To keep the meme alive, sometimes people have to look pretty hard to identify a sort of victimhood which requires or justifies government dependency and unequal treatment. Here's a beaut: Secret Racism Running Wild in Our Government. As a "person of color" Michele Malkin says:
And back to England again, a Brit condemning gangsta culture denounced as racist: UK riots: It’s not about criminality and cuts, it’s about culture... and this is only the beginning. In other words, gangsta culture, criminality, drugs, and rampant materialism is just natural for blacks, right? He is being condemned because he doesn't buy that narrative? The "racist" thing is insane. Neo-McCarthyism. Comments

Talking about outstanding black achievers reminds me of an interview I once had the pleasure of doing with John Johnson, the founder of Ebony magazine and Negro Digest. He came to the midwest to Chicago as a young man, son of a Southern sharecropper, with almost no assets but his brains and creativity, and set about getting funding to start his publications. Not surprisingly, he got his financing, and the rest is a real success story.
He enjoyed telling the story, and I enjoyed hearing it, because he was a high achiever and he succeeded, partly because of his charm and quickness of mind. Listening to him, I began to realize that many Americans don't even realize that there is a whole network of black millionaires in this country who have stories of achievement just like his. So the story of American black people is also a story that is uniquely American. Cheers me up, it does. Marianne It is not insane. Crying "racism" is supposed to frighten black people. What public figure, since MLK, has devoted himself to inspiring black people to achievement, effort, right-living, etc? I don't even hear that from the O.
We accidentally had a comment block on this post. A gremlin did it.
My comment is this: What black major public figure, since MLK, devoted himself or herself to black Americans' devotiong themselves to hard work, achievement, entrepreneurialism, and all of the past values of the black - and white - America? Bill Cosby has been a consistent voice in the wilderness. But his message hasn't gotten out, because it's contrary to what mainstream media wants to report.
Mr.Cain or anyone else for that matter could do a lot worse than to aspire to Uncle Tom's example, as he chose death at the hands of his slave master rather than. 1. beat his fellow slaves at the command of the slave master, 2. renounce his his christian faith or 3. betray his friends who had escaped slavery. I wonder how this got to be a term of derision.
Quibble: "the party of Ike who desegrated the army" that was Truman, although Eisenhower enforced and expanded it to all services.
"gets incapacity benefits from a problem with her legs..."
She obviously couldn't keep her knees together... Alan Keyes, JC Watts, Greg Anthony.....yeah...they're just Republicans because they "deflect the allegations of racism". What a great reason to become a Republican. It's insane - the liberals are simply insane.
Neo-McCarthyism? McCarthy claimed he had the names of a hundred communists in the government. McCarthy was an optimist. The venona transcripts contain hundreds of code names, most still unidentified.
In a newer thread you wonder why there was not much response to this racism thread. Because this is old hat. Racist? I roll my eyes.
Most of the racist charges are from white libs who want to show they are oh-so-superior to the wingnuts. There haven't been as many racism charges recently as there were a year or two ago. Libs found out the race card is losing its effectiveness. Give NJSoldier kudos for his knees crack. What occurred in the UK, with white bread rioters, shows the corruption of the welfare state. The riots show that opposing the welfare state is not racist, given all the corrupted whites in the UK on welfare and in the riots. What is destructive about the welfare system is that the state becomes the de facto father. Because the state takes the role of the father, males may now impregnate without consequences. Before the implementation of the welfare system, consequences would have included an angry father with a shotgun after the male who got his daughter pregnant. Not pleasant, but it meant that very few males got someone pregnant and skipped town on their responsibilities.
To the biggest degree possible, the state should act as a tax collector in this situation, collecting child support from the father. If the father does not have the financial capabilities, then the father will be required to spend X hours per week in some sort of job training or in some sort of make work, like sweeping the streets. Some sort of public humiliation might be in order: this is a deadbeat who got someone pregnant and refused to take responsibility for it. Humiliate babydaddies? That's the idea. If there are negative consequences to getting someone pregnant and neither marrying nor voluntarily providing child support, word will get around. Paternity would be subject to proof by DNA tests. If the mother cannot or will not identify the father, there will be negative consequences for her, such as some sort of make work or reduced benefits. The era of no consequences for getting someone pregnant has got to end. No solution will be perfect. So be it. The subject of race is again becoming popular with the growth of information about human bio diversity:
http://www.humanbiologicaldiversity.com/ The fact that Stephan J. Gould was just discovered to have fabricated his 1970s results to disprove racial differences probably will be the nail in the coffin of the "race doesn't exist" line. David |
Maybe most of the world is on vacation now, or taking breaks from their information-gathering and opinion-surfing. Still, I expected more interest in my racism post yesterday. Perhaps it is all old hat to our readers. I thought I did an OK job of poi
