We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A guy I worked with was married to a woman who worked at the IMF (or was it the World Bank?). She had to go to England pretty regularly so he went along. He told me he was always fearful in England because the threat of violence which if it happened was likely to be unanswered partly because nobody had any guns - not even the police.
Of course, lately some police have started carrying guns because of the rise of violent crimes (some of those "crimes" are people defending themselves against real criminals). It seems that their culture of entitlement and lack of the ability to defend one's self is catching up with the Brits.
Can we finally quit hearing from the MSM about how much safer England is than the US because they have no guns?
Didn't think so. Our media celebrates their government lies (ours as well). Media constantly tells us being a sheep is good. Criminals have their victims. Governments have power. Media has influence. Everybody (except responsible citizens) happy.
The British did not disarm themselves, the politicians did, there is no legal hand gun posession in the UK for the general public. Most of whom seem to belive the political line pushed by the police that hand guns are bad......
Therefore, only the criminals have guns......
The rest of us are down to cricket bats, hocky sticks & (most un English dear boy) baseball bats......
And God help us if the police catch us using them on criminals!!!!!!
This is a bit of a stretch but I'm a Maggie's Farmer so I'll stretch.
Eliminating the death penalty in England, and in Europe generally, seems to have been a prelude to downgrading crime as a threat. In the process, European nations seem to have downgraded their own subjects or citizens. Assaulting someone in England will get you tried, maybe, and jailed, maybe, but not likely to either one. Hitting someone who is attacking you seems to be more legally dangerous than being the intruder. How much more "downgraded" can you be?
Well, you could have to wait 18 months for a hysterectomy, find that it's scheduled during your vacation, and be moved another 18 months down the list.
England was the birthplace of human rights in the Western world and eventually throughout the world. It was the first nation to establish rights for all. And it's rapidly moving toward being the first nation to effectively abolish rights. (I'm not talking about countries like Saudi Arabia that never had rights).
