We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Well, there aren't many cacao trees in Switzerland, the Netherlands, or Hershey, PA either. As I vaguely recall, the local availability of fresh milk is a more important factor, since the cacao beans aren't particularly perishable.
I submit that it is probably "good" rather than"home made" cake and frosting that you prefer, Barrister, as home made is no guarantee of superior quality.
That said, I also don't care much for chocolate cake. In fact, I'm not much fond of cakes of any flavor except, perhaps, as vehicles for fillings and frostings.
Another example of a cake with a misconstrued national label would appear to be Italian cream cake, which as far as I can tell is Southern US in origin. Also with coconut and pecan.
With the mention of carrot cake, I'd like to put in a mention for one of my all-time faves, the spice cake with cream cheese frosting. Tasty and somewhat unusual.
