Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, March 25. 2011Am I an anti-elitist elitist?What is "elitism"? I found a few definitions:
Well, if you perused my pedigree, resume, career, J. Press tweedy and conservative life style, and the respectable, intelligent, accomplished, well-educated, well-behaved and refined people with whom I tend to associate, some might consider me one of America's elite. Given the definitions I found, however, I am not: I have no interest in power or control over anybody, and despise anybody who thinks they deserve that position. I lack all desire to tell anybody how to live other than myself, and I am not even especially good at that. Beneath my superficial aspects beats the simple heart of my free, crusty and cantankerous independent Yankee farmer ancestors who had far more freedom than we have today. For example, when it comes to politics, the only politicians I trust are the crooked ones. They don't seek power over me and have no plans to make my life "better" - they just want money, chicks, easy jobs without meaningful accountability, and maybe some support for their weak egos. Let them have that if that's what they need, just so long as they leave me, my life, and my hard-earned assets alone. I will not be an obedient and passive serf like some of my Brit ancestors doubtless were, sending most of their grain or wool to their superiors. We are not an aristocracy here. Let the elites figure out how to run their own lives (in general, I am not impressed), instead of trying to run mine. A few relevant links: - Michael Beran, author of Pathology of the Elites: How the Arrogant Classes Plan to Run Your Life, has an essay in City Journal: Exposing the Elites - Promoting a politics of social pity, today’s super-elites revive an old strategy of coercion. - Also, at Chicago Boyz: What, Precisely, is the Issue with “Elites”? - I should not omit Sowell's classic The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy. I eschew elitism at every turn. Educated, successful and reflective, I take as much pride in my comfort in a duck hunting blind with my toothless high school drop-out buddy as I would any professional meeting or university setting.
You're talking about snobbery, not elitism.
Meeting lots of people got rid of my snobbery many years ago. I don't know what to think about this, Barrister. On the one hand, I'm all too ready to say, "Screw the snobs, the rich, the elite." (My inner plebeian coming out; and yes, I realize you have strictly defined "the elite" and I am ignoring that here.)
And yet, wasn't our great country founded and structured by exactly the same elite... the educated, moneyed type? I don't regret that; in fact, I much appreciate it, and I don't think it could have been done any other way, or by anyone else. Thus my ambiguity... Pedigree - Check.
Resume - Check. Career - Check. Upper Middle Class Lifestyle - Check. Respectable, Intelligent, Accomplished, Well-educated, Well-behaved people with whom I tend to associate - Check (with some exceptions - everybody has to have friends in low places). So if all that, in theory, makes me an elite with elitist tendencies why is it that my Spouse and family still call me a moron? Pedigree - Check.
None. Resume - Check. Nothing. Career - Check. In shambles. Upper Middle Class Lifestyle - Check. I wish. Respectable, Intelligent, Accomplished, Well-educated, Well-behaved people with whom I tend to associate - Check (with some exceptions - everybody has to have friends in low places). Does Maggie's count? (For either?) So if all that, in theory, makes me an elite with elitist tendencies why is it that my Spouse and family still call me a moron? So, with all our differences, Tom... why am I also considered a moron?! A guy can't get a break! Just because I could, I looked up bozo as a word.
Bozo or bozo may refer to: The traditional Turkic fermented drink, made of millet. The Bozo people, a fishing people of the central Niger delta in Mali The Bozo languages, languages of the Bozo people Bozo the Clown, a clown character very popular in the United States Frédéric Bozo, historian Bozo (mascot), a live mascot for the University of New Hampshire Bozo the Iron Man, a 1930s/40s era comic book superhero A pseudonym for The Joker in The Dark Knight Bozo, also known as the "Minnesota Iceman", a purported unknown hominid displayed in state fairs or carnivals in the USA "Bozos", a single by the UK band The Levellers Bozo bit, a weak copy protection system in 1980s Apple's Macintosh operating system Who knew? I always appreciated this purely Catholic look at Elites from The American Society for The Defense of Tradition, Family and Property...
A Society Without Elites is a Socialist Society We are witnessing a surge of popular outrage and even revulsion against an onslaught of ideologically liberal changes affecting the lives of millions of Americans. This outrage is fueled, among other things, by the following: • decisions of activist judges favoring private property-denying socialist agendas and showing complete disregard for public opinion; • junk science academics whose unwarranted and twisted findings are celebrated in the liberal media and establishment and are subsequently used to justify society-changing legislation and regulation; • out-of-touch, liberal politicians using legislation or the raw power of government to intervene more and more inappropriately in the lives of Americans, creating in the process a leviathan Socialist State; • ideologically-motivated media run amok, showering notoriety on leftist and opportunistic intellectuals, politicians, and entertainment celebrities willing to trumpet the “politically correct” line on a spectrum of controverted issues. Do Not Confuse “Liberal Establishment” with True Elites Undoubtedly, the individuals targeted by this furor can somehow be considered as elites. However, they do not represent true elites. Rather, they represent the latter’s corruption. Read more... http://www.tfp.org/tfp-home/fighting-for-our-culture/a-society-without-elites-is-a-socialist-society.html Linked at Chicago Boyz
http://chicagoboyz.net/archives/21332.html#comments How can you truly determine an elitist when snobbery and cockiness are also in the same catagory? That said anti-elitisim is the same as snobbery and cockiness as well because anytime you think you are better than someone else you can be placed in the Elitist catagory because you are judging others.
