We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
When I graduated college in 1988, there was optimism and opportunity. Imagine getting out of school this year. Is there anything to look forward too? A lifetime of crushing taxes to pay off the fiscal irresponsibility of their parents and grandparent? A diminished country and intrusive government?
My oldest is headed to High School this year. I fear for their future in ways my parents didn't have to in the 80's
He did not, and cannot, include the last couple of years and I suspect that his numbers might be very different if he could - but that's mainly because of the recent policies and going forward, with the huge debt we face, it will be an uphill climb.
His point is still valuable because it tells us what was available to us when there was competent leadership and sane policies.
Soldier ... Each generation has their own fears for the future. Fortunately, when we are kids, we are much more optimistic than later, when we've been battered by reality. When I graduated from high school in 1946, we had just completed fighting a devastating war in which we lost so very many of our finest, bravest young men -- more than 141,000 of whom were killed in combat, my fiance among them. So the future seemed uncertain, to say the least, to many of us. And we had lost forever that secret certainty that youngsters have, that they are immortal and death can't touch them.
But we survived it, as your children will. And some of my generation achieved great things, in spite of it, as yours will.
Marianne, I certainly don't want to get on your bad side, 'cause I like you a heck of a lot! But I will dispute your point.
After the horrors of WWII, we certainly had many fears and uncertainties, chief of which were communism and nuclear destruction.
The difference is, now the commies are running the place; I mean the USA. Completely running the place, whereas before they were more of an external threat or fringe group, disdained by all.
Why do I see no hope? A guy like Obama gets elected, that's why. No vetting, no background check or media scrutiny. The guy wouldn't even be allowed within 100 yards of the president if he was actually checked out.
Of course, there are always miracles out of nowhere in which to hope, so we shall see. But history seems to witness against this experiment lasting much longer.
I grew up during the Cold War and the economic malaise of the Carter Administration. As bad and dangerous as it was, we addressed the challenges head-on when we elected Reagan in 1980.
We face 3 huge challenges right now:
1. Government overspending, overpromising, and borrowing
Here is the difference: No Democrat and very few Republicans are willing to even speak honestly about any of them, much less take action. I watch the news and I see people in denial. That scares me more than the actual problems.
I think you hit the nail on the head. Obama seems to have been pushed into the office from no one konws where. He went to public and private colleges and we don't know what classes he took or what his grades were. We have even heard where his fellow classmates were intereviewed and say they never saw him in a class or on campus and didn't even know he supposedly went to the same school as them never mind supposedly in the same classes. His history is a mystery and he was like a ghost. The only things we seem to knwo for sure about him is that he was raised a muslim his mentors and teachers were communist and socialist and that his pastor is a racist rabid anti-American which somehow Obama never seemed to notice. How did he get to where he is? Who pushed/helped him get all the breaks and opportunities not open to you and I? Who is pulling the strings? Is he a manchurian candidate? What are his goals/orders? Who is in control?
