We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
...on issues the public follows closely, the scientific consensus keeps changing. Margarine was introduced as the healthy alternative to butter; now experts tell us that the transfats in many types of margarine are the worst things you can eat. Should you eat no fat or the right fat? All carbs, no carbs or good carbs? How much vitamin E should you take? How much sun should you get? How much fish oil should you swallow? How should you divide your time between aerobic and non-aerobic exercise? On these and many other subjects, expert opinion keeps changing. Perhaps the current consensus will last; quite possibly, it wonít ó but the experts canít tell you what will happen.
Nobody trusts experts to be right, except those with no scientific education at all. Furthermore, real experts are humble about things.
The Army Corps of Engineers comes off as a villain in this piece. When is the last time America lost thousands of lives due to rain-induced flooding? It's been a while and the Corps of Engineers is part of why.
"The Greening of Godzilla" -- when I watched the American version of Godzilla, I found myself thinking that the Army would have been confronted by Endangered Species Act activists, demanding to protect Godzilla as the last of his kind.
"I found myself thinking that the Army would have been confronted by Endangered Species Act activists, demanding to protect Godzilla as the last of his kind"
So I'm not the only one...
"The Army Corps of Engineers comes off as a villain in this piece. "
To a greenie they are the cause of major damage to "the environment" and untold suffering to "cute little animals" (like rats and malaria mosquitoes, but they're smart enough to not say that out loud).
"The number of sockeye returning from the ocean to the Fraser River this year is one of the lowest in the past 50 and follows two years of dangerously low returns. In fact, we have witnessed decades of decline for diverse sockeye populations from the Fraser Watershed, some of which are now on the brink of extinction."
- Dr David Suzuki, 25 August 2009
"As fishermen haul in massive loads of sockeye salmon, the official estimate of this summerís near-record bounty has been upped to 30 million, the second increase in four days, deepening one of Canadaís great scientific mysteries. It is the most sockeye that have returned to British Columbiaís Fraser River in almost a century..."
Dr Suzuki seems to be the Canadian version of James Hansen, PhD. They can both look at complex data and draw clearly the wrong conclusions, then extend the wrong conclusions far past the valid reach of the data, as long as the results support their agendas.
They are clearly believers in "torture the data and eventually it will confess."
