Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

1. The WaPo is sad because the EU is failing in its collectivist goals.


It does not sadden me, because I view the EU as just one more misbegotten attempt to create a European empire. The Romans started it, and people have been trying ever since, whether with armies or with ink. This motley crew will never see eye to eye.


2. The Aussie election is still up in the air. Hey, you upside-down folks - we do care.

Id only the EU was intended as some empire, because that would at least show some vision and pride. The only thing it reminds me of is the pigs in Animal Farm, with our prized EU constitution reading 'some animals are more equal than others'.

Your piece on the elections down this way was very clear. However, the Australian Labor Party (ALP) spells its name without the 'u".

I believe this is because of the influence in Australia of the American labor movement early last century.

I always thought that, as a common trade and economic union, the EU was a useful concept.

Why they ever felt the need to go beyond that just escapes me.

They are "resisting" the common welfare. They finally are seeing the light. Maybe the writer needs to take some Maalox and STFU.
