We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Huh? Edison and Ford produced a 100+ mile range electric car circa 1908! The Baker [Electric] was the industry leader for battery powered autos, though.
At least people won't make fun of the Edsel any more as the auto industries' worst marketing blunder.
This is as impressive as New Coke. Shows what happens in a socialist paradise when you have the government running the auto industry, instead of responding to customer demand. Cars no one wants at prices no one can afford.
Maybe, just maybe, by 2050 the auto industry will have solved the biggest problem of electric cars [efficient, long-lived storage batteries] but until then 'electric cars' are an impractical, expensive indulgence. Remember the Stanley Steamer? Another great idea that never got off the ground.
Are you people nuts? This may become the most successful automotive platform ever. The Government Motors Volt will be spec'd into all federal fleets, all fleets that support federal contracts, all state funded projects that have associated fleets, and there will be military and postal service versions.
What's "too expensive and undesirable" got to do with it?
I made the same cynical comment this morning to my wife when they announced it over the radio. When she said at that price it obviously would be a flop, I said no way, the government will force every public agency in the country to buy them.
...would that be the bombing campaign that, perceived to the eastward as yet another of the western invasions that always come into a weak Russia, or as yet another Celtic assault on the Slavic (pick either or both), elected Strongman Vlad Putin and returned the world to its east vs west discomfort zone?
Lighter note, remember the mail-order do-it-yourself home-assembly Yugo? The Yugo Screw Yourself --? (groan)
Knucklehead ... Just because the all-powerful government forces it on us doesn't indicate that in an absolute sense it's successful. It just means that we live in what amounts to a dictatorship. Russia was like that. And mostly still is.
I hope that white car is not a Chevy Volt. I read an article earlier today that has the base price for the Volt being $41,000 that sure doesn't look like 41 grand to me. Any way, people that are dumb enough to fall for all that ecofreak crap that was the cause of the rush for electric vehicles are the ones dumb enough to pay that kind of money for a set of wheels with a range of a little over a 100 miles under ideal conditions. I guess it best to just tell them to fill their boots.
