We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Nation-building in Afghanistan

Petraeus or whoever. Is this our job? Even Alexander tried, and many have tried since.


I thought it made some sense to go after an Al Qaida refuge, but building an orderly nation-state in Afghanistan? As they used to say, "You can't shine shit."


We shined a light on Al Qaida and they scattered like cockroaches in a New York kitchen. But now what?

No, it is not USA's job but is a fetish of democrats.

Msr. Feaver put the finger on the pulse of their el presidente who set the timeline which Feaver calls counter-productive for the US military.

Now, why would el presidente want to do that?

Hmmm.

Democratic tyrant wants to continue quagmire as Feaver suggests but not forever.

Long enough however, methinks and God forbid, for Iranians to lob nuclear armed Ashura's at Coalition Forces in Pashtunistan

It's past time to get USA's forces out of Afghanistan but not to late, yet.

Now what? Good question Barrister.

Petraeus seems to think we can win and he knows a whole lot more about the situation there than I do.

It would be nice if we could be directed to some objective, empirical evidence that makes the case that progress has been made in the last 8 years. Opinions and estimates do not qualify as empirical evidence in my view.

During WWII, it was easy to see the progress of the war because one could see the battle lines on the map changing. The results in A-stan thus far have been far less tangible.
