Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Thursday, June 3. 2010Another photo of ye olde farm, plus an earnest plea to our readers
Here's our request to our regular and/or irregular readers: As summer begins in the northern hemisphere, people tend to find better things to do than to read websites. That is good. However, here at Maggie's the steadily-growing readership is our only compensation for our (enjoyable and self-educating and sometimes simply therapeutic) effort and time. We know we are not to everyone's taste, but there are tons of folks out there who might enjoy our eclectic site if they knew we existed. If you have not done so already, do us a favor and introduce us to your friends, neighbors, relatives, colleagues, enemies, etc. (It used to be called "viral marketing," but before that it was called "word of mouth.") Thanks, from the Maggie's Team. PS: Dr. Merc reminds me to remind you to not be shy, and send us comments when you have them. Trackbacks

"but there are tons of folks out there"
If one were fat, would that be considered "hate speech"? While I've made it clear what I think of the ever-increasing amount of political posts here, by the same token I admit that these are interesting times. If I don't read something bad about Al Gore every week, I just don't feel complete. My only quibble is that Sundays are treated like every other day. I always expect more 'reflective' articles, silly stuff, nature stuff -- pretty much anything but the usual (mostly political) fare -- and am usually disappointed. You, BD, will occasionally post an article on religion, but the others sure haven't gotten the message. Sunday is supposed to be a "get away from the rat race, recharge your batteries" day, but one doesn't get that here. My only quibble with the readers is that it would be nice to see a few more comments, even if it's only "Thanks for the nice read". As I mentioned to you a while back, Barrie's really been on a tear lately and has posted some really excellent stuff, but I think he's averaging about .5 comments per post. That's not right. It's the only feedback the bloggers have, and thought-provoking posts such as his deserve recognition. As referred to my posts, most of which deserve to be burned at the stake. :) It is a bit odd that MF doesn't get more comments. Be careful what you wish for, though.
I love Maggie's Farm, btw. Please advise if there is some method for submitting directly items that might be of interest for use ... something to lighten your load a bit..... I have some things in particular that I think Bird Dog would like but do not see the method for contacting him.
Harry - May I email you? I have the address. We're always looking for ways to expand our horizons.
Doc I have to admit - it took me a while to get used to this whole commentary thing. I lurked here for quite a while. I came here originally via The Hostages Part Deaux Deaux where I became friendly with some of the regulars there - somebody posted a link to here and when I arrived, it was like I was home. Plus, I'm not very good with stringing words together - all part of the dyslexia package so I generally shy away from that.
Maggies is a great blog and, to offer my opinion, very unique. Yeah, it does include politics, but there's your huntin', fishin', birding, flowers, gardening and music - oh what I would give to be music editor here :>) - books, psychology, religion, financial - jeezum pete I don't know why anybody wouldn't want to comment. The only thing missing is science fiction - and even that crops up occasionally. With respect to Doc Merc's commentary thing - yeah, the comments are down. In my opinion, and I know we're all busy with life, commentary also requires input from the original poster - commentary on the commentary if you will. Sometimes that is a little lacking. My morning, noon and evening routine is - Lileks (The Bleat and sub sites), scan the NYT headlines then off to Maggies. Been that way for a while now. Tom -
"Plus, I'm not very good with stringing words together - all part of the dyslexia package so-" Plus there's that business about you being a boat captain. And a fisherman. I mean, if we're looking for reasons, let's take the whole package into consideration. "commentary also requires input from the original poster - commentary on the commentary if you will. Sometimes that is a little lacking." Boatcaptaining fishermanned lysdexia notwithstanding, that's a very good point. But, again, people are busy, and if you're got three or four posts out there and people are calling you a moron or misunderstanding something you said in the post, you'll just have to answer them -- and there goes an (accumulated) hour of your day. From what I see, BD and Barrie do the same thing the pros do; glance over the comments a while later, leave a short note if need be, then bug out. Junky's cleverer than that. If you disagree with something he said in his morning links, rather than coming back at you in the comments, he'll post another article supporting his claim the next morning. That's what I'd do. As far as Dr. B goes, as far as I know she hasn't answered a comment in ages, but I usually don't pay any attention to the psychobabble posts. Three days alone in the desert with nothing but food and a sleeping bag will cure 90% of all psychological problems. It's all perspective and priorities. Bruce and I answer all comments, but for entirely different reasons. He's a tough ol' jarhead, and jarheads don't take 'no' for an answer, and certainly don't quail in the face of adversity. Me, as the only right-wing blogger with the courage to post a Lady Gaga song, obviously have to protect my sterling reputation against the countless hordes of polka music enthusiasts who seek to discredit me. It's a war out there, friend. "oh what I would give to be music editor here" You're only allowed to post on boats and fishing here, right? Good call on BD's part. But how about if you did a post on maritime songs? Clever, huh? Best of both worlds? the only right-wing blogger with the courage to post a Lady Gaga song
ROTFL!! Ok - I'll give you that one - it was unique. Bruce is way smarter than I am - I'm the kind of Jarhead who is slow on the uptake, but once I get rolling - watch out. Maritime music huh? Modern or pre-industrial? I can do both. :>) Tom -
"Ok - I'll give you that one - it was unique." Actually, that's not my 'official' tag line. The correct one is, Dr. Mercury: The only right-wing blogger with the courage to defend Paris Hilton. I'm awesome. :) "Maritime music huh? Modern or pre-industrial? I can do both." Funny. :) Wait a sec...I'm getting an idea... A Beach Boys Anthology. I'll handle the inevitable legal battle. Between "sandy beach" and "Beach Boys", I think you've got a strong case that this falls within the "maritime only" restrictions on your guest blogger's license. The tie will be irrefutable in a court of law, and I'm guessing BD's legal council is telling him so at this very moment. I think he'll cave without much of a fight. Jan and Dean? We can do that too, but we need to expand it a little. Surf music was more than the Beach Boy and/or Jan and Dean. There are The Ventures, Dick Dale, The Rip Cords...the list is endless. I think that would be much more fun. Then for an encore, we could try do-wop - a much neglected genre.
Speaking of The Ventures, if you were to guess, how many times has Nokie Edwards played 'Walk Don't Run"?

Tom - Okay, I see your devious plan. In other words, as long as you can actually hear the ocean's roar in your mind when you speak the group's name, it counts? Excellent reasoning, my friend. With me covering the law and you tackling the angles, I don't see any way BD can stop us.
As to the project, were you thinking of assembling any of them yourself, or just doing the YouTube thing? If you want to get your hands dirty, I'm the guy to see. (why didn't that sound right?) Let me make up a list, put some ideas down and I'll send you an email - I don't mind getting my hands dirty making the compilation.

Hate to burst your bubble Dr. Merc, but Little Miss Attila http://littlemissattila.com/ has been posting Lady Gaga videos for AGES....heheheh....She's an awesome conservative blogger too...
Nice picture of the farm. I mostly lurk these days, too busy with my own blog and on our own farm these days. But Maggies' is still my favorite blog of all... Yeah, but it didn't take courage on her part.
You're site's interesting, but you need to kick up the size of the fonts a notch. Ten bucks says you're nearsighted. Methinks, yall have a great centrist yankee site and appreciate yall standing up tall down wind.
I'm a resident of the Chicago area displaced from Massachusetts (Franklin). I found you from Neptunus Lex's blogroll. Love the site.
Bird Dog, my friend ... You already know what I think of you all. I even invested in my own personal comcast direct link, because I couldn't 'get' you when I was networked with my husband's computer. And I need to read you, several times a day. I do recommend your site often -- specifically last night when I posted on Neptunus Lex about the video of the courageous youngster carrying the Israeli flag through the ugly Muslim protest against the Israeli blockade. Keep up the wonderful work. You folks are as necessary as breathing to my mental well-being.
Marianne Gringo - As a small aside, you might not have caught my comment in the 'Bullshit' post the other day, but sorry for the hassles. At first I thought it was the video, but now I'm blaming the server. It was even stuttering on BD's work computer, and they're hooked up to a pro outfit. The videos are rendered at 2,000 kbps so -- in theory -- should stream fine with a standard 3-meg broadband connection, but there are a lot of factors at play. BTW, can I email you? I've got the address. Got something private to show ya.
Gringo, yall have to take crazy centrists' hypocrisy in stride and keep cuttin' bait AND fishin'.
I appreciated for Meta for her all ready criticisms and specially liked when she pulled standard chicklette retort from her repertoire, "Whatever!" |
