Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, May 16. 2010Woody Allen speaksWoody Allen: "It Would Be Good If Obama Could Be a Dictator for a Few Years". As he sometimes does and has done, usually with humor, Woody captures a certain arrogant, elitist, Upper-West-side Manhattan world view of the world. I, for one, at this point, find it despicable, hateful, and anti-American. Furthermore, it shows a condescending contempt for relatively decent and ordinary people like me. With the history of western Socialist dictator-types - Robespierre, Bismarck, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, etc, it is remarkable to me that somebody like Woody would long for another. Heck, maybe we could have a utopia if I were dictator for just a few years. I am fairly intelligent, Ivy-League educated, and knowledgeable, and have lots of experience about how things work in the real world (far more than most career politicians), and I have informed opinions on almost everything too. Problem is, I have no interest in having power over anybody else. I hate power, except over my own life. I have studiously avoided power during my entire fairly-successful career, and have refused a number of offers of power, large and small. Power over others is revolting to me. That's why I post on Maggie's Farm. Woody's attitude is just freaking amazing to me, and says a lot. As much as I enjoyed Sleeper, I am done with the guy. He had no morals anyway but I tend to give "artists" a little leeway. Why? Because I am stupid and like to be entertained. Authoritarian Leftism is a sickness, and as evil as sociopathy. Maybe it is a form of sociopathy. I don't know. These people need to learn a little humility...and a few other things too.

Yes, he support Roman Polanski, too.
In Woody's world we'd all live under dictators and child rapists would roam free. nice. I agree with Woody...let Obama be dictator of Greece for the next few years. Couldn't hurt. Oh wait...he meant of America? Nevermind.
I agree with you, Barrister. Exercising power over others is revolting and tiresome. And when I'm feeling a little cranky, it's, umm, tempting too.
I've been through with Woody for awhile myself. To Woody, and the narrow-minded New York elitists and the West Coast 'Alternate universe' guys, the whole center of the country is 'terra incognita' filled with rubes and angry evangelists with guns. Well, we've got some of the guns all right, but most of the time we're not angry, because we have the means to protect ourselves, and to hunt and fish, and to produce oil and gas and energy in spite of the elitists. If we could just get the White House, with its know-nothing economic theorists, to take its grabby hands off our states and let us get profitable again, we can save ourselves and save this beautiful country. Fat chance. Marianne Woody must think life is a movie. But even the worst movie imaginable is over in a couple hours and the audience gets to leave the way it came in.
If I was a dictator... well, I'd have the police kick the crap out of a lot of people who desperately deserve it, starting with the people who think we need a dictator.
After that I'd step down and wait for Judge Barzon to subpoena me. I would add older adult males who use their influence to lure young girls into bed with them. Then they would be sent to a maximum security prison, where they would become a celebrity prison bitch.
"Authoritarian Leftism is a sickness... and a few other things too." Yeah, like a "redundancy."
When/why did Woody go round the bend?
In "Banana" he expounded that all dictators go bad. This came after his hero in the movie changed the official language of their little South American country to Swedish and decreed citizens had to wear their underpants on the outside of their clothes. Gore Vidal is another one. I used to enjoy his essays very much. Now he's a foaming-at-the-mouth leftist kook. Walter Cronkite - there's another one. Must be in the water up there. Don't you see the rest of the country looks upon New York like we're left-wing, communist, Jewish, homosexual pornographers? I think of us that way sometimes and I live here.
Alvy Singer, Annie Hall In Woody's world we'd all live under dictators and child rapists would roam free.
Oh come on. Anyone who has watched his movies knows this is a silly remark. Allan is not an ideologue...he's not even political. He's a cynic. He also has made some brilliant films (just like Polanski). Relax. First they excused comedian fascists. Then a fascist comedian got elected and nobody ever laughed again.
These centrists hit some flat fantasticals, methinks.
Woody is a comedian. Joke, anyone? Sleeper is the only funny movie Woody Allen ever made, in my opinion. It's all been downhill from there. Allen is definitely in Has-Been Land - and once former celebs go that route, they'll say the weirdest things, mostly just to get their name in the news. How sad to be them. Not.
off thread, but rich: guess what the IMF wants Greece to dump? Its government health care!
http://www.investors.com/NewsAndAnalysis/Article.aspx?id=534021 The thing is, Obama was the closest thing to a dictator we could have here (so far, God willing) for over a year: he had a huge House majority and a filibuster proof Senate for nearly a year. (!!!) We're just lucky the revolution was brought to us by the gang who can't shoot straight. However, we can't afford any more of this "luck." We've got to wake up and throw the bums out.
"if he could be a dictator for a few years because he could do a lot of good things quickly."
Hey Woody, the last time we had a dictator in Germany, it didn't work out too well for your parents and grandparents! What a schmuck. Leftists especially want to tell individuals how to behave, so as to join the group (fad of the day).
I'm sorry you didn't mention Pol Pot -- the commie genocide dictator that all anti-Vietnam war protesters were 3rd type friends with (enemy's enemy - against US capitalism). He was alive and taking power when I was able to vote. Pol Pot should be the biggest example of what happens when the enemies of US capitalism win. It's Woody Allen! We all agree he has a bizarre outlook on pretty much everything right? I mean that's how he came to be so well-known; by using that strange vision to make movies. I think everyone just needs to calm down and stop focusing on one interview with a comedian. Not to mention he is not normally one to provide blatant "laugh out loud" humor. His humor has always been brazen if not controversial and is often presented with a straight face which is intended to get more of a rise/reaction out of the person he is speaking to.
