We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
We are admirers of Steyn. His writing on any topic rivals that of PJ O'Rourke, and that is saying something. Furthermore, he is able to talk just like he writes.

One of my favorite Steyn quotes (which I have to paraphrase, so it's not really a quote) was when he told Brian Lamb on C-Span that he didn't think someone had to stay in college until he/she was 35 in order to be able to say something intelligent about the world.
two big things, besides the obvious talent:
1) he tries hard to find humor in grimmest topics (even if it's necessarily 'gallows humor', humor is humor is humor), and
2) he's honest, even if it hurts.
I was reading the Wiki Bio because I've always wondered about Steyn's accent. I noticed that the two pundits offered up to comment on Mr. Steyn were (snort) Andrew Sullivan and Johann Hari. Cracked me up!, but that is Wikipedia.
I had just watched Steyn on "Uncommon Knowledge" at NRO. He noted that when the world financial crisis broke, protesters from Iceland to Bulgaria went to their governments and demanded Why didn't you the government do more for us?
In the US, the only country in the Western world where a significant chunk of the people rose up and said to their government--Why don't you get your nose out of our business and your hands out of our pockets?
I paraphrase, but I liked that!
