Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, March 27. 2010Fed upArizona getting tough on illegals. I guess it feels to them like an unarmed invasion and, in a sense, it is. Armed too, in many cases. Why Mexico cannot make their beautiful warm country a place where people want to live, or even to immigrate to, is beyond me. I do not know why they make it so difficult, if not impossible, for people to move or work there either. They would benefit immensely from 100,000 genius techies, finance wonks, and engineers from India and China and Singapore. Trackbacks

GEEEZZUSSSS F_____ING CH_____!
DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET IT? IT IS NOT A STATE'S ISSUE--IT IS A FEDERAL ISSUE! HOWEVER, our FEDERAL LEADERS do not have the courage, and perhaps, to the contrary have the motivation to permit millions more illegals to cross our borders. IT IS THE FED'S JOB--WHICH THEY REFUSE TO DO. THEREFORE, IT BECOMES A STATE'S JOB OH SH--T WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE US NOW? The Barrister brings up the saddest point.
The Country is not shy on wealth - Agriculture, Minerals, Oil, Beauty - The Country has been mismanaged for hundreds of years. And don't think the Aztecs were doing a good job either. The Spanish just changed the ones in charge. Now don't make me out as racist or some other stupid thing. Living in Colorado all my life (except Army time & Viet Nam) I have known, grown up with, worked with, worked for and had as clients a lot of the Southwest Spanish speaking people. Isn't it sad that I can't even put a simple descriptive name on them? What would be great, in my mind, would be for a million or 5 of them who understand life, business & freedom to go back to Mexico (many of them have been up north for generations) and take Mexico over. Insist on Law, Property Protection, Honesty & Freedom and rescue that population who is otherwise trying to get up North. To a degree, that is happening. Years ago I hitched a ride with a Mexican returning from his homeland, who was complaining about the extortionate auto insurance he had to pay for his two weeks vacation in Mexico. He and many other Mexicans in the US could make a comparison between how things were run in the two countries. There is constant traffic between the two countries, of going back to visit friends and relatives. News gets around. Say what you will about the current government in Mexico, Mexico is better governed than it was 30 years ago. IMHO, in part, that is due to news about how things are run in the US getting back to relatives in Mexico. Mexico suffers from a complex set of bad ideas that are held together by the love/hate relationship with the USA. Yes, culture; all of Latin America rejects the US way of doing things on a daily basis. The "tell them what you think they want to hear" concept is seen in Mexico as the polite, and therefore preferable, way to deal with people. It's dysfunctional, of course, but it is gracious and gets people through a difficult life. And it's none of our business -- their choice, not ours -- so we can shut up and sit down.
The Mexicans can't forget that the USA now owns what was once half of Mexico, and it still rankles. Even in signing it over, Mexico was cheated: Trist was told by Washington to abandon negotiations and come home; he did not mention that detail to the Mexicans, who signed. Then Trist handed the astounded Senate the treaty, and Mexico was carved up. That and more pisses the Mexicans off, heap plenty. That's one set of reasons they make it so hard (VERY hard) for gringos to relocate to their nation. Most of the world is profoundly corrupt. Mexico is no exception. Now Mexico is nearly a failed state because of the lunatic US "war on drugs," which was lost years ago. Think how Mexicans feel about that! They know the truth, and they are right to blame the USA. Mexicans correctly perceive an influx of well-off, trained, capable and eager gringos as the final coup de grace to their heritage and future as a distinct entity. As badly as they have governed -- and it's been horrible -- they have the dignity to want their sovereignty. They deserve that. So they have the kind of immigration laws and enforcement the USA should have. If the USA can tolerate the UN, it can tolerate Mexico. Of course it would help if the USA were run as well as most citizens of that nation mistakenly believe it is.... ...which will never happen with Obama and Hillary in power. And in foreign relations, remember the recent Honduras outrage. The future, as regards Mexico and a lot of other nations, will be a mess. ed on west slope, what do you think is happening right now?
I live in Canada, and we too are inundated with illegal Mexicans. One of them is a tenant of mine. Actually, 6 of them, and they managed to get legal. Mama, papa and 4 kids. Mama and papa work like crazy, all the time, except for periodic vacations back home. They have a work ethic I have tried for years to instill into my own sons, with little success. You don't think our crazy Anglo ideas of honesty, property, rule of law are penetrating deepest darkest Mexico? You are in error. Germans have again wandered into Rome and are returning the ideas of civilization to their backward homelands. Only this time they are black haired, brown skinned, with plenty of Indian blood and speak Spanish. I have an idea, let's recruit them into the army so our own boys will be safe. Good idea, not? We live in interesting times. Benson ... I think you're correct that Mexicans are still pouting about a portion of Mexico being purchased by the U.S. Which it was. But that was a long time ago. Mexico's government has been deeply corrupt and almost non-functional for many many decades. And if you want to blame anyone, it should be the drug cartels, which have in essence taken over the government from corrupt, bribable government officials and have established a reign of terror which is now regularly leaking over our border, along with busloads of illegals who head straight for Houston, which continues to describe itself, idiotically, as a "sanctuary city."
As far as "deserving sovereignty" is concerned, nobody deserves that unless they earn it -- and continue to earn it. "The tree of liberty must be watered from time to time by the blood of patriots," -- fighting in their country for their country, I must add. Marianne 1. Mexicans cherish the anti-gringo legends and teach them in government schools. There is also the myth of "the heroic children." In the USA, that sort of thing is bad form.
2. My guess is Mexicans consider the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo anything but a voluntary "sale" of territory. They would compare it to being held up; you don't donate your money and jewelry to the thug. What matters is not your or my perception of historical events, but the Mexicans' view. Too, I don't think historians would agree with you -- Mexico did not really want to hand over all that valuable real estate for a pittance -- but I could be wrong. Remember the fuss over El Chamizal when JFK was president? Mexicans take territorial issues very seriously. I can't blame them. 3. The drug cartels would not exist if not for the US "war on drugs." They could have been put out of business long, long ago, while they were tiny. Instead the USA chose to limit the Liberty of its citizens. 4. Mexican sovereignty is not to be denied because the nation is shot through with corruption. Most of the world is just as bad, or worse. What's your list of nations that do not deserve sovereignty? Be careful; your criteria might bite you where it hurts the most! 5. Certainly it's not for you or me to deny an existing nation its sovereignty; in fact, it would be counter to US ethics. Even in war, the US allows nations to continue to exist (Cuba, The Philippines, Germany, Austria, Italy, Thailand, Japan, Iraq and a bunch of others I can't recall offhand). Only the CSA was destroyed; CMIIAW. 6. Mexicans have fought in and for their country a number of times. Their last revolution ended in the 20th century. The horrible violence going on now indicates (to me) that they are willing to fight for their sovereignty. What more do you require of them? If you think Mexico does not qualify ethically as a genuine nation, that's fine with me. I can't see your logic, though. It's not an immigration issue. It's a welfare issue.
