We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
My sister lived in the foothills in the suburbs of Albuquerque, NM. In the winter, the mountain lions would come out of the mountains into town looking for food. You didn't let you pets run around loose outside.
Ray ... This is kind of like the polar bears who gather in and near the town of Churchill, Manitoba in fall to wait for Hudson Bay to freeze over so they can go out and hunt seals.
As you know, bears are omnivores, and they can cause consternation as they wander through the town. While they're waiting, they roam through the town and into the town dump looking for things to eat. The Fish and Wildlife people keep them under control by herding them into the Polar Bear Jail [a quonset hut with cells] until there are enough to call in the helicopters and convey them back onto the ice away from the town. Good wildlife management, really. At least they don't shoot them for pleasure, as would-be mighty hunters do from helicopters. The mighty hunters leave orphaned baby bears, which will starve without their mother's care.
That's wildlife mismanagement. I'm not sentimental about polar bears. They're the largest land-based marine mammal, after all, and they'd eat me like a shot if they could get to me. But I hate stupid cruelty to wild animals
I may have seen a cougar once, about two miles from my house and about 100 yards from a neighborhood with kids. Or maybe not -- it was a quick view at twilight.
I'd love to see that view from inside the house. Good day to have a remote to start the car.
