We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The US is invading Haiti?

We’ve controlled Haiti before, didn’t like it, and gave it back. Haiti’s best defense against invasion is that if you seize Haiti . . . then you have Haiti. I mean, if this were St. Bart’s or Bonaire you’d have something, maybe, but . . .

I heard on NPR this morning that the US military is NOT in charge. Some civilian agency Obama nominated is responsible for the botched effort so far. How does this play out? Just like Katrina. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Local governments and federal bureaucrats are happy to rebuild and sweep away the "trash" when disaster strikes.
2. The US military is called upon to provide support and is given the spotlight role only to be handcuffed by those in charge.
3. The same locals and agencies then complain loudly about the military while quietly hoping the refugees will split so they can sell the property to developers.

If I was a Haitian, I'd be an orphan, homeless, healthy wretch right about now, and in line for a ticket to USA. So far they are talking 45,000 refugees. I bet it's an order of magnitude greater in the end. (and only 2.2% have HIV now so no worries!)

Had the US done nothing, it would have been vilified.

When the US does do something, it's vilified anyway.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Two important points for all the usual anti-American suspects:

1. This isn't about the US, it's about MILLIONS OF HAITIANS WHO DESPERATELY NEED HELP NOW.

2. Your ridiculous opinions are irrelevant. Go sit in the corner with Pat Robertson and Danny Glover.

You do not see the u.s. soldiers helping the rescue operations, haitians digging themselves out of rubble with their own bare hands and with the help of professional help and rescue teams if they can get to them. United states is there for only one reason to invade Haiti and that is all ! They do not let the French plains to land, and they are also realizing what is happening. United States has no damn right to invade a sovern country when they can't even defend themselves. Now there is more than 20000 soldiers in Haiti and the number is groving, this action must be stopped by United Nations !

I've also just thought of something P.J. O'Rourke wrote once. Sorry, I can't find the exact quote but it was along the lines of: "occupy Albania and you've got - Albania. It's not like liberating France."

Ditto for "occupying" Haiti.

Actually, Obama is invading Haiti in his very own special way.

It a very girly invasion.

He should do the world a favor and resign the Presidency and join the UN mission to Haiti with his soul brother Billiy Jeff Clinton.
