We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A father walks into a restaurant with his young son. He gives the
young boy 3 pennies to play with to keep him occupied.
Suddenly, the boy starts choking, going blue in the face. The father
realizes the boy has swallowed the coins and starts slapping him on
the back. The boy coughs up 2 of the pennies, but keeps choking.
Looking at his son, the father is panicking, shouting for help.
A well dressed, attractive, and serious looking woman, in a blue
business suit is sitting at a coffee bar reading a newspaper and
sipping a cup of coffee.
At the sound of the commotion, she looks up, puts her coffee cup
down, neatly folds the newspaper and places it on the counter, gets
up from her seat and makes her way, unhurried, across the restaurant.
Reaching the boy, the woman carefully drops his pants. She takes hold
of the boy's testicles and starts to squeeze and twist, gently at
first and then ever so firmly.
After a few seconds the boy convulses violently and coughs up the
last penny, which the woman deftly catches in her free hand.
Releasing the boy's testicles, the woman hands the penny to the
father and walks back to her seat at the coffee bar without saying a
As soon as he is sure that his son has suffered no ill effects, the
father rushes over to the woman and starts thanking her saying, "I've
never seen anybody do anything like that before, it was fantastic.
Are you a doctor? "
'No,' the woman replied. 'I'm with the Internal Revenue Service.'
Maggie's Farm readers are nearly universally opposed to nanny fascists, the few exceptions being trolls. Trolls are a rara avis on the Farm.
How do we define nanny-fascists? I have two key criteria:
1. Would I presume to compel my neighbor on this issue?
2. Would I let my neighbor compel me on this issue?
Taxes for arts: I would not let my neighbor compel me to support ballet, so I can't demand he support the zoo. Smoking? I would not let my neighbor compel me to do so, so I can't presume to forbid her to do so. Sex with kids? Yes, I would compel my neighbor to stop and I would expect him to stop me. Church? See the listing for ballet.
"Those youth were all about image. Political fashion. The youths do not know reality yet. They only know entitled dependency."
Barrister, In the two-plus years I have frequented this blog, I have read nothing but disparaging remarks from you about education, entitlement, and young people. "They only know entitled dependency?" The article did not state that. So many kids work hard to make money to go to college to make something of themselves. The reality they know is the only reality they CAN know - the one they live. They aren't old, tired, haughty cynics who feel it perfectly fine to label an entire generation of young people as total losers. You come off as the one who imbibes entitlement as your due. Kindly show some respect and go look up "maligned". As a lawyer, you ought well know the word.
"Such is the fate of Generation Y, as they're known, both praised for their willingness to volunteer but also maligned as the "entitlement generation" — eager to help but unsure how to deal with tumultuous times that are a first for many of them.
On top of that, many of their parents are baby boomers who witnessed, and participated in, the civil rights movement and Vietnam War protests that followed John F. Kennedy's death. That's a lot to live up to.
But to be fair, says political scientist Mike Wagner says, it's tough for young people — or any American, for that matter — to know how to get involved in issues with solutions that aren't always so clear-cut."
Those youth were all about image.
What about today?

Ignorance is the state in which one lacks knowledge, is unaware of something or chooses to 'subjectively ignore information'.
