Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Showing the Flag

A re-post from Aug. '09, for Flag Day -


All of the flags on houses in our Woodstock, VT photos reminded me that we have not had a flag since we rebuilt the side entry porch about 14 years ago.


Shame on me. It's a grand old flag.


I ordered a set from this place today. I will place the bracket low, so I can easily pull the pole out in rain or at night. I am not in favor of those night-lit flags, but I recall that Barry Goldwater had an automatic flagpole at his place in Arizona that lowered and boxed the flag at evening, and raised it in the morning.


I loved Barry, but that sort of hi-tech flagpole seems cheesy - and lazy - to a Yankee like me.

Absolutely, thats been on my list of things to get for quite awhile. (The Gasden flag that is)

Right now I've only got a small flag like the one in the above picture but I'd love to get a freestanding non-house mounted pole up with a U.S flag as well as a Gasden.

Barrister ... We're flying Old Glory today, partly because it's Flag Day, and partly because it's my birthday.

Thank you for your good wishes, dear hearts. Eighty-two years today, I was born into this fair country, and I love it still, more and more every day.

I have two such posts at the house up here in Canada.

I don't have a flag up everyday but I fly flags on particular days, in twos. One of the flags is always the Canadian flag.

What particular days?

1 July (Canada Day) - two Canada flags.
4 July - Canada flag, US flag.
14 July - Canada flag, French flag.

And so forth. You get the idea.

An unexpected bonus has been neighbours asking, "What flag is that one?" It leads to a good conversation.
