We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It's an excellent way to drive capital and jobs overseas. Via Tiger, the US keeps high corporate taxes while the rest of the developed world lowers theirs:
It's worth noting that if you did this with Personal Income tax, the lines would probably be moving in different directions.
Fact is, lower personal rates, and higher corporate rates, have proven to have a more beneficial effect for growth. I have no problem with high corporate taxes - the tax gets passed off to the consumer, but not at a 100% pass through.
Corporations don't pay taxes. Taxes to a corporation are an expense, becoming part of the cost of goods, and then passed on to the consumer of the goods, inflating the cost of the goods to the consumer.
American goods carry a huge tax burden that foreign manufacturers don't carry, further preventing them to be market competitive.
America needs to grow and do grow, we must sell goods and services to the global market and we must be competitive to do this. American corporations learned they can be more competitive by manufacturing in other countries by setting up foreign subsidiaries.
All of these moves are a result of meeting market pressures, and to be competitive. Corporations for many years have just tried to get around the tax issue, but if our new administration does start trying to chase companies all over the globe, what we will see instead of corporate compliance is corporations actually moving offshore, and leaving the US. Because their choice is to be competitive and survive or not and die.
If we eliminate the income and corporate tax and go to a tax on consumption, such as the FairTax, we can eliminate the unwanted aspects of our present tax policy. America is quickly becoming the highest taxed nation and it won't be long before we see the opposite of how America became great.
"I have no problem with high corporate taxes - the tax gets passed off to the consumer"
Rick,
First, all taxes are 100% passed on to the consumer.
So you like indirect taxation schemes. So you would like a VAT too? What other type of non-transparent , convoluted tax schemes should we adopt?
For heaven's sake, what we need is the opposite.
Can you imagine what would happen if the automatic deduction for payroll taxes was stopped and everyone had to write a check upon receipt of their paycheck?
There are all kinds of taxes from excise to gasoline to sales to property and more. I can't even figure out what my total tax bite is. That's ridiculous.
All government has a spending problem. It's not a revenue problem.
The solution will not be found in cost shifting and hide the banana exercises.
