We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"Highly respected?" Depends by whom and for what. General Powelll is known mostly for his intrepid love affair with General Powell. I suppose that could translate into a form of respect within the broader Obama Narcissistic Disorder category.
Powell at his best was a RINO. I am not sure who respects him. I don't.
He certainly never learned anything from Gen. Patton. Remember Patton wanted to take on the Soviets while we had men and material in Europe because he knew we were going to end up fighting the Soviets anyway. In the end, he did not have his way, we spent a fortune on the Cold War (won by America's capitalistic economic might over the socialist economic model of the USSR) and let the Russians kill 10 to 20 million of their own people.
Likewise, Powell had all of the military and political tools to not only take back Kuwait in 1991, but to take out Saddam. Powell, along with Bush I, didn't have the stones or the foresight. This mistake is a major contributing factor to the mess we are in today.
Powell can go straight to the dust bin of history as far as I am concerned.
There is no way I am taking political advice from him. He proved he has neither economic or Constitutional acumen when he endorsed Obama. He has shown his true colors.
Powell never made an ounce of sense to me. I was in Kuwait in '91 and saw the results of a 9-month spree of looting and rape. We could have killed Sadam easy then but Colin knows better - he thinks it's less trouble to leave him be. The most powerful mech force the U.S. military ever assembled left the field scratching their heads.
Last year he tells me that I should vote for an junior Senator with no business or military experience and an ideology that I, and supposedly Colin, oppose. No sense at all.
