We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Once smoking was convincingly linked to lung cancer (and possibly esophogeal, bronchial, etc.) lots of people stopped, and fewer took it up. As a smoker, I still approve of this.
But second-hand (aka "environmental") tobacco smoke has only been "linked" as a "risk" factor, and only by questionable data-dredging .
A few years back, an actual clinical study was done. The idea was that asthmatics would be more sensitive, and it would be easier to show a relationship. So families with asthmatics were studied. There were two conclusions: there was no demonstrable linkage (!) for even exacerbation of the condition let be cause, but as a side effect of the study it seemed a genetic link might be involved in chronic asthma.
Funny you put this on here 3 days after whopping increases in tobacco taxes and after the House approved the FDA regulating tobacco. In a few years tobacco will be OK because the taxes from them will have dried up as more people quit.
