We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
For an evolutionary system, continuing development is needed just in order to maintain its fitness relative to the systems it is co-evolving with. - That is sometimes referred to as The Red Queen conundrum. We, humankind, are the evolutionary system and always will be. We must have continuing development, progress, to stay relative to the systems we co-evolve with: Information. Humans will always be behind information, and that is why 'we' are The Red Queens - always running and running as the information passes us by. The alternative is a status quo which many like and want but which would lead to stasis. Liberals have hi-jacked the word 'progressive' for modifying a social agenda to juxtapose with the incredible flow of information. Conservatives have no disdain for progress, but they do for the use of that progress to change society. It's semantics and ideology playing politics, and neither side has yet figured out that the true progressive is the group in the middle absorbing the information and using it without radical social change.
In 1989 a book was published Destroying Democracy: How Government Funds Partisan Politics by James T. Bennett and Thomas J. Dilorenzo
My copy is up in Montana so I can't quote verse but the book is a dandy and answers your question with exquisite accuracy by naming meeetings and the names of those Democrats at the meetings where one of the topics was getting Americans to buy into socalism.
The Dems realized their language was becoming more and more right out of Das Capital so they decided to make some changes...one of the biggest was turning to the usage of "progressive" to describe their programs. Overnight a notice went out partywide to begin using this term.
I just checked Amazon..you can pick up the book used for $3.95 ... it's a roadmap of ACORN and many other groups that form the skeletal system of the Democratic Party. I heartily recommend it.
