Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, March 6. 2009What to do with the economy? On thinking within the same antique box.I heard Doris Kearns Goodwin interviewed on Imus this morning during my 6 AM drive to work, and lost all respect for her. She was flacking hard for Obama. She claimed that "nobody knows what to do about the economy." She said that Obama must experiment with government's role just as FDR did. She said his personal popularity polls show that people believe that he cares, and that's the important thing. She said he needs time to solve all the problems (What!?!). Oh, I almost forgot. She said that teleprompters are the modern way (although neither she nor Don Imus were using one). Wrong on all counts. Pure flackery by a partisan Dem delivering Dem I'll just take her first point, because I happen to know what to do: 1) Restore the uptick rule to discourage the highly profitable bear raids against solid companies (rumor is that Russian and Chinese hedge funds are making a mint doing that, probably in collusion). 2) Cut corporate taxes to encourage hiring 3) Cut cap gains taxes to encourage investment in business growth 4) Cut individual tax rates to unleash spending and to remove the crushing threat of higher taxes 5) Get rid of "mark to market": it makes it almost impossible to make a long-term inventment in a tree that needs time to bear fruit. 6) Quit the war against business and the delusion of big government "solutions" (ie my money) to everything from my health to GM's de facto bankruptcy, and 7) Talk up the American economy and its resilience. In other words, unleash the animal spirits of the economy and the creative power of the people instead of frightening everybody by threatening to put it all on a tighter leash. People yearn to be unleashed to do things and to follow their dreams, and not to be hand-fed or to become serfs to The State. Disincentivization to effort and reward has been tried elsewhere, and it does not work very well. (Plus a prosperous nation is in a good position to take decent care of its feckless, unmotivated, parasitic, and unfortunate.) But they will do none of those things, because they are not about what works. They are about their ideology and their political goals. They are clever, crafty and tricksy - but deeply unwise, and unwilling to think outside their little old 1930s box. Why? Same old reason: These people live inside government, and thus play the government game. They love power, and somehow became deluded into thinking that they are smarter than us regular folks. Wrong! Disgusting as it may be, whatever 'system" they give us, people will find a way to "work it" for their own interests. It's called "incentive," and it is quite human: people want to take care of themselves, their families and their loved ones - and they want to be free to do things their own way, whether they screw it up or not. It's about human dignity. Nobody can give anybody that. All anybody can do is to free people to pursue it.

You just found out about dear Doris? She's a flacking hack and accused plagiarist. She always seems to show up with that other "historian", Michael Beschloss, who proclaimed that Obama (Anointed One) had an IQ that was "off the charts". I actually heard him say that on a replay on the radio one day.
Great job Pocono Joe in pointing out the esteemed historian Doris Kearns history of plagerism. I never listen to her as she is o revisionist history in the Leninist school of history.
Besschloss has nice hair but that's where his virtues end. If 0bama is so smart why does he take a telepronpter to the bathroom with him? The man-child has got to go. Hey , I answered my own question. Right on the money here, Barrister, including your Rx for economic recovery. These Obama people are all about the lust for power and are very, very dangerous. The GOP exists if for no other reason than to prevent these dangerous people from acquiring too much power. We are at the 24/7 alarm bell point now and need to rally the opposition very quickly. I would think that the so-called "Independents" have already seen enough, wouldn't you? There will be no compromise with these people either, they must be decisively defeated/overthrown, for the good of the country.
Well said. I'd vote for that platform and so would other libs/dems like Cramer.
The GOP better not fumble this great opportunity. A little humility and a real desire to fix the US issues rather than drive their ideology could have cemented the Dems in power for decades. They don't call the GOP The Stupid Party for no reason. They are politically stupid. Not dumb, but lacking in the political craftiness and lying.
Their opponents play for keeps, with live ammo. The GOP never seems to get that. Everything is compatible with leftist ideas being right for Goodwin. It's all in the perspective.
Her son volunteered for Iraq, which put major pressure on her lefty glands, but she came through it. She's proud of him but he's a victim. WABC archives the interviews, um...here http://www.wabcradio.com/sectional.asp?id=22807 Alan Keyes on 0bama the communist.
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6b4_1235260822 Mr. Keyes is right on.
BD's moderate Rino, RFO Tony can't understand how Mr. Keyes can call Dictator Hussein an abomination. But then he thinks babies should be murdered, too. Mudboy in the office of President is an abomination of desolation who must be resisted at every turn till he turns from his evil ways. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090306/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_stimulus
Obama said the nation has met every challenge with bold action and big ideas and "that's what fueled a shared and lasting prosperity." WAIT! I thought Obama said we weren't sharing the prosperity? And how is what he's doing bold and big (outside of forcing coercive government action down our throats)? Folks--you are missing the point. There was (WAS) a serious fiscal problem with the mortgage lending and with our balance of trade with China. Truly, the outsourcing of jobs has created a steadily increasing deficit. HOWEVER, that situation has been created by the extreme liberals in preparation for this moment in history: what they perceive as THEIR TIME TO BRING ABOUT CHANGE. I am always stunned when FOX, or Lou Dobbs, or Rush keep asking the question where is the visible demonstrations of protest from all of America? (read that as to mean where are the protests from middle class, middle aged whites--because they are the only one's that might still remember the foundations of this country and care). There are no protests because: BECAUSE the threat of depression as proven by the daily climb of job losses is the STICK that will prevent those protests. Here is the carrot: someday you might get a job: here is the stick: demonstrate today and we will have your face on camera, the thugs in any government agency that we control on your case, and most importantly of all--WE WILL MAKE THIS DEPRESSION HAPPEN for sure! Until you show me the ability for our side to do the same level of grass roots organization--don't bother me with the question of where are the American people?
I forgot to add:
Shhh (be quiet) their much dreamed of revolution is under way--do not disturb! 'demonstrate today and we will have your face on camera',
ap seems your antenna is tuned for maximum reception... I would have no trouble showing up to be the face on the camera ...for the children, of course. How does the civil unrest of the late 1960's parallel the mood of a segment of today's society? . DucSup, I still feel bad that I misread your reply to me about a week back. Your reply to me was so gracious.
I'm learning not to drink, and wear my glasses when I read posts. Just slap me off the side of the if I do it again. : ) I think Doris looks a lot like the "I love you lady" but, then again I didn't have my glasses on when I saw the video jappy
Thx , but - not necessary. appreciate your comments under any condition. On what did you base your former respect for Doris Kearns Goodwin? What little of her work I've read struck me as shallow and whenever I saw her on TV doing commentary she was clearly a Dem flack.
It is clearly time for the vast right wing conspiracy to be quietly organizing 24/7 and be ready to take over the GOP as the vehicle of political power. Only with political power can we reverse the direction of the Obama Administration. If we don't stand and fight this time, you can write off the USA.
Obama is really making it easy for us- before it is done, he will be demonized like no other President including Bush. He has a self-destruct drive like no other POTUS we have ever seen. I think he is a total fool drunk on his own bullshit and that of the sycophants surrounding him. The Obamas think they are oh so cleverly bulletproof because no one dare attack them less the race card be played in pre-emption. They are very wrong. The race card is no longer playable, it got the O elected but is no longer valid in governing, we have cut through this smokescreen once and for all. Billy Vote Clinton must be loving this- 2012 primary challenge by the Mrs must be in the back of his mind with all of those Indies and crossover Republican votes just waiting to be harvested. Moderate Senate Dems may yet save the day? A fellow rubs a lamp and gets the genie. The genie offers only one wish. "How about solving the economic crisis?" says our friend.
"Ya gotta be kidding," says the genie. "Okay, then how about healthcare funding without ruining healthcare?" "Well, all right, show me that stock chart again." Agree with all barrister. Only addition would be a thorough look at our financial system and the checks and balances contained therein. Apparently something went horribly wrong along the way and a lot of people and businesses were able to let their lust for money get in the way of moral responsibility. Seems a wee bit more oversight is in order.
As for the China / Russia thing--not sure there is collusion, but I hope no one believes for one moment that the Chinese are not going to exploit this to fullest, you are sadly mistaken. Consider also there looming cuts in defense that the US will take and it gets even more frightening. Oh my, need to preview posts first.
should read: "...then you are sadly mistaken." "Consider also the looming cuts..." Some moral responsibility AND some additional oversight were in order.
When people question if "Bush caused this" - I usually reply "only insofar as he provided little push for enforcement of existing regulation" I then point out that deregulation wasn't the cause - in fact, it's barely a problem (aside from the removal of Glass Steagall, there is little deregulation that was problematic). The problem was REGULATION - the forcible funding of home purchases as prescribed by Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. Well, not forcible, but if someone tells you it's OK to buy a $500k home on a $30k income, somebody's doing something wrong, and it isn't just the lack of oversight. Too much easy money - too much belief that the market can ONLY go up. This is true, alot of people say "real estate NEVER goes down". Sadly, history has proven otherwise YET AGAIN. It does go down, just infrequently. But when it does, it's very painful and the effects are far-reaching. China is taking advantage of the situation.
China announced a 15% increase in military spending. This will have multiple implications. First, that spending will be stimulative to the domestic Chinese economy, helping to mitigate the decline in the export economy. Second, the increase in military spending will be greater than 15% on a relative basis. The US under "White Flag" Obama plans, along with other Western powers, to decrease military spending. Third, China will focus a large portion of the spending on improving military technology. Space weaponry and the ability to attack command and control/communications are key areas for the Chinese. This will be another step in closing the "gap" in capabilities. Now wait a minute here, Chinese spending more on their military will "stimulate" their economy how? Perhaps if the Chinese "military" spends it building roads or improving infrastructure, I could see that. But unless they use those military technology improvements to invade another country and take their stuff, threaten another country into paying tribute, or to beat up on their own people and take their stuff (granted, all things they could do), I don't see how that would be a stimulus. Hell, Obambi and the dims plans make more economic sense in that regard.
My objection is not to the possibilities (based on what I state above) but to the general ignorance perpetrated by our educational system that somehow war and/or military spending are good for the economy. AND P.S. CURSE YOU MF SPAM FILTER. Ah, feel much better now... KRW,
An increase in spending on Military technology and military infrastructure will create permanent demand and jobs. Is that difficult to see? I think not. Really? Then why would this work and Obambi's stimulus plan not work? Where does the WEALTH come from to increase military spending? Governments don't just magically decide to spend wealth that they just happen to have laying around. It has to come from somewhere. This right here is the fundamental misunderstanding of economics that is the root of our problems.
But perhaps it is I who is misunderstanding your point. Where does military spending "create" demand? Unless money is used to create more wealth, there is no new "demand" created. Taking money from people to spend it on something those people don't want or need does not make them demand it. Unless the Chinese people are feeling that their security is in peril, this is just a government power move. They're still Communists at heart, it appears.

the biggest problem for the Chinese is their new middle class.
Nice post Mr B, I think you should mention your solutions to Timmy. One more eliminate taxes on dividends. I'd put a one year moratorium on the federal gas tax.
What has become apparent over the last month is that what was once a financial problem has been hijacked and turned into a political fight for what the left calls “economic democracy”. A leveling of income and a suppression of innovation by the capitalists replaced by a purity of Marxism that even Karl Marx would not acknowledge. After all he stated he was not a Marxist.
The most haunting specter are the fairly consistent polls showing that there is a majority support for state the likes of which has only produced mass killings, gulags, deprivation and scarcity among the countries that have tried it. This can only be attributed to the slow accretion of socialism in this country beginning with FDR. Any educated person on the FDR administration knows he was enamored of Stalin and that his administration was riddled with communists. FDR set the stage and the stage quickly filled with “useful idiots” ready to gain the socialist worker paradise. Obama was tutored by a cadre of communists and adopted their philosophy, combined it with a smooove street savy and telepromptered his way into the White House. The coalition of fringe kookballs this country of the free allowed to grow and gain access to federal largess (ACORN, et. al.) managed to reach a mass large enough to reach the tipping point whereby iy became chic to support the unknown 0bama. Now in our ignorance we are going to pay the price. His power must be stopped during the mid term elections or we are headed for a civil war. I seriously doubt anything will change via mid-term elections. Our Fellow Citizens have gotten what they WANT. We are a democracy and we can vote ourselves into slavery for marxists masters if we want. The Great Experiment is over. Somewhat amazing it lasted this long.
Geez I think your right. Lets all just adopt a totally defeatest attitude.
You know Knucklehead, Geo. Washington's entire Army was due to be disbanded on Jan 1 1777 but he convinced them to cross the Deleware and defeat the Hessians at Trenton on Christmas 1776. It takes some GUTS to get it done. You show NO GUTS or a can do attitude. We don't need defeatests...for all the good you do for God sakes just move to Canada. Guts? Who the hell left you the high and mighty. Use your real name for a start. What... afraid of losing your pension.
Matter of fact I'd start believing more of everyone's earnestness here if folks would stand behind their words. If we speak as shadows we stand as shadows. Yeah guts Luther. Nobody appointed me high and mighty, it's simply my opinion in conflict with anothers opinion....if you have difficulty with the give and take of differing opinions then you need to toughen up a bit.
As far as nome de bloggers it's one of the better established traditions on internet blogs. But allow me to invite you, in your resplendent virtue to go ahead and publish your Social Security number, telephone number, street address and city or town, work number, height , weight, shoe size, hat size, annual income and any other information we may need to verify that the words and ideas you present are not from an alien source or a self appointed high and mighty dissenter. When we know this then you can run for official denunciator and arbiter of all good and evil on this site. Provided the owners allow you to become so. In the meantime you may continue to call me Habu. Have a nice evening. If we speak as shadows we stand as shadows. ....Luther
Luth, you are aware of the term nome de plume are you not? You are aware that all of the Federalist Papers were written under a nome de plume, as well as a host of other historical works that produced new and often provocative thought? Your above dictum is sophmorish and lacks historical credibility. As for Knucklehead, he is under the impression we live in a democracy. How silly. The word never appears in either the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. We live in a Republic which is vastly different than a democracy..but then that will have to be Kunckleheads responsibility to research and educate himself on the differences.

Habu,
You're a good man in a lot of ways and in a lot of other ways you are woefully lacking. The gutless comment to Knucklehead, IMHO, is below the belt. For one that has gotten kicked off this site and then reinstated should be more appreciative and less lecturing. It was you that almost destroyed this site. Never once have I seen an apology. Your actions right before being kicked out, now that's sophomoric. To all that post here and use their proper names does leave them vulnerable to their address, telephone number, city and town that they live in and quite possibly their SS#; their job, income, weight, and shoe size would be a bit harder to obtain From everything that you have mentioned about yourself on this site, I could probably find you. Loose lips do sink ships. I might be a shepherd, but I am not a stupid one. I mean this in a non-threatening way. You are a talented man, you just need some polish on your rough edges. We're all on the same page here. We love this country deeply. We want to see the good ship America back on track. We all might differ as far as what it needs to get back to our greatness. Calling other posters gutless is nonproductive and a stain on your character. You add so much to this site but sometimes I think the disadvantages outweigh the gains. My best to you and your wife. I say this with constructive criticism.

Jappy this is not in response to simply you but all those who have such angst over my style. First off I think many of you would benefit from casting off the PC that has you boxed in; utilizing what you believe to be the exact phraseology, psychology, and tenderness so many take as acceptable. Now understand this. I am as George Orwell pointed out, one of the rough men who stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm. We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm G. Orwell If I was hard on Knucklehead it was with cause. His message was of surrender. I will never surrender to my adversaries, they will have to kill me. Most of you don't have the least idea what a truly CQC life and death situation is like while my lifes experiences have placed me in such situations on three continents. So no lectures on manning up. But enough of the chest beating. Lets turn to freedom of speech, thought, and how they are transmitted. Each of you have your own style which I will die guarding. Each of you express different ideas..ditto. But it doesn't follow that because I would die for your rights that I would remain mute or attempt to patty cake my response because it might offend the delicate feeling of the recepient. So disagree, but save the lectures on how I present MY thoughts. Don't like me, you have every right to do so if you choose. If I was using vugar language in my responses, if I was unable to support my presentation I most likely would not write a response. As for almost destroying this site. Wow, I had no idea that my thoughts could come close to destroying this site, nor would I want to. I enjoy Maggies. So there it is, Each of you will have to deal with it in your own way, but when the day dawns that an opposing thought cannot be expressed then more than this site is in trouble. And as a society we are moving at an ever acccelerating pace toward that very outcome.

Gotta stand with Habu here, Luther.
Fact is, I have arguments that are getting more and more angry with my Obamaniac friends. They are apologists of the worst sort. Whenever they see another lie, they say "oh, well it's only politics, and why are you defending Bush?" I reply "I'm NOT defending Bush, why are you engaging in misdirection? I'm pointing out that your hero CHALLENGED YOU to hold him to a higher standard, and you're accepting STATUS QUO - which he says is UNACCEPTABLE." These people are stupid and they are sheep. We can only survive with our intelligence and our passion. We need it - and we will overcome this idiocracy. I've read Knucklehead's comments for the past five years or so at various locations around the web.
Let me assure you that he is not stupid and he is certainly not a sheep. He's frustrated, just like the rest of us. Personal insults such as calling another gutless when they express their frustration does nothing to bring anyone together. It only further divides and drives thoughtful commenters from this blog. Habu has a very high opinion of himself, and in many cases is worthy of that opinion. However, his raw, unbridled meanness usurps much of the good he may contribute. It is a pity he cannot seem to help himself.

Hi Jappy: No, not yet, big lunch is tomorrow!
With regard to the subject of cameras. I ask you folks to go to Google Maps. Type in an address--any address; you can use your home, the local liquor store, your place of employment, or church. Any place in or near a populated area. Try looking at addresses in the Seattle area for instance. When you click on the tab that lets you see the actual terrain and buildings (satellite?) then zoom in. Now, click on the little man figure that appears just under the compass. Drag the little man over to your address and click on view. Now you will see a picture of the building. This is nice--we all know that Google has been showing view of places from satellite photos--what I just discovered is this: many, many places are now photographed not from space, but from street level. That is to say someone (Google, or?) have been driving into your neighborhood and photogrpahing every building from street level. Another form of terrifying surveilance is the increased numbers of street cameras, parking lots, intersections, everywhere. No, Duc Sup I am not set up for receiving, but I am an observant realist! An excellent observant realist at that! Come 3000 miles east. Everett, Ma, a suburb of Boston. One day a few months ago my uncle and cousin noticed a crew of men installing a camera on a light pole. Being curious Dagos. (not crazy like me and my dad) Went out and question the men.
