Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, February 23. 2009A few linksNo time for thinking today. A few cocktail-hour links: Hopey-changey means Realpolitik. No more of that Republican freedom malarkey. Not a coward: talking back to Eric Holder. Am Thinker Palin: an unbalanced MSM tried to destroy me. Indeed. Unbalanced is the right word. She did seem to drive people crazy. A billion American dollars to "rebuild Gaza." Is that "stimulus" too? What Gaza needs are some liquor stores, strip joints, and casinos. Yet another new name for it: Climate Disruption. I guess that means whenever it's not nice and sunny out...or when it's too sunny too. Might be a good time for the Mafia to go public.

Since, Mudboy Hussein has so much money to give away to his Muhammadan bros, there is no point to rebuilding Gaza until the Muslims there, are removed to the Muslim Palestinian State, which is Jordan.
I am sympathetic to Palin's cause, and agree the media is unbalanced (and I have spent 25 years working in TV - there is no question it has a liberal slant).
However, one MUST be careful how one posits this. Hillary Clinton attacked "the right wing conspiracy" that tried to bring down her husband. It carried little clout because conspiracies are idiotic and silly. But Palin is bordering on echoing this sentiment. More people believe the MSM is liberal, so she gets a bit of leeway here...but she must be careful to be specific about what the lack of balance represents and where it comes from. 1. It is NOT a conspiracy. The MSM has no "ruling elite" telling it what to do. Rather, it is a conglomeration of talking heads who mimic each other and attempt to outdo each other with their outrageous thought patterns and sensationalism. Couric's interviews were classic bait and switch interviews....but the portions of the baiting were casually left off. The Bush Doctrine question was not specific - there are fully 4 different versions or interpretations of the "Bush Doctrine". This was also not noted. 2. The media is liberal NOT because all commentators are liberal. Far from it. It is liberal because it presents an agenda in a manner from which it questions all other items. For example - the current economic mess is a result of deregulation. Thus, what is Obama doing to FIX regulation? This is clearly wrong - deregulation worked, it was enforcement of existing laws that was a problem. So the agenda was set, then the question asked, without presenting how the agenda was being defined or framed. It's an example of what I call "sloppy thinking" on the part of the liberals. Rather than question the agenda, they ask the question and consider the agenda to be agreed upon already....while it clearly is not. 3. Denial of opposition. Good arguments from the opposition will typically be avoided - they are usually too good to present as it would destroy the agenda. As a result, the most outrageous of the opposition's views will be presented, because they will clearly seem outlandish and reduce the credibility of the conservative view. This is a standard. The Liberals avoid this problem by saying "Well, Michael Moore is a bit out there....". They still love him, but they are willing to disavow him. Apparently, conservatives are not allowed to disavow the likes of Anne Coulter when she is on a lunatic rampage. 4. Agenda setting - who is doing it and is it a conspiracy? No it's not, and it's not being set by anyone in particular. Interestingly, for as much as Liberals HATE markets, the agenda is set in the marketplace of TV ideas. One commentator asks a particularly stupid, but really cool sounding question ("when banks were deregulated, did you really expect them to stick to standard accounting guidelines?") which then creates an interesting spin, which then takes on a life of its own. We saw this with Joe the Plumber. He asked a great question. Regardless of his background, his question had LEGS. It could have undermined Obama completely (indeed, is proving prophetic), but a few people decided the best way to combat this was to attack Joe personally. That was genius....in the sense that it diverted attention from a good question and directed it to a stupid question. So, Mrs. Palin, I wish you luck. But play fair...and be specific. You are right - you were undone by an unbalanced media. But don't expect that media to come to your support anytime soon, especially as you continue to expose it. The Nattering Nabobs of Negativity remain in control!! Whoa. Nice job, Rick. Too much of Palin is a turn-off. It was a turn-off, in fact. Maybe after this she'll go away for a while and then come roaring back when the time is right.
I watch Fox cable news, and one show I had to quit was Hannity & Colmes. Fox picked the ugliest milquetoast to represent the liberal side, Alan Colmes, who was much too polite to balance out Hannity's brash blowhardedness. I'm glad Colmes left. Hannity disgusts me but not because of his views - because he's a pig for the limelight. I never miss Brit Hume/now Brett and his panel. Best TV out there. ` Excellent summary, Rick. Even if you have to repeat yourself tediously, keep coming back with those points in a lot of venues.
I remember when "unbalanced" was PC for "nuttier than a fruitcake" or "out of their rabid-assed mind".
Unbalanced people got locked up in places with names Agnews, Atascadero, Camarillo, and Vacaville. So ... "A billion American dollars to rebuild Gaza." What a waste. Palestinians have founded their whole societal structure on undying hatred of Israel. They don't seem to have a vision of themselves as a proud and separate country, a sovereign state with plans and ideals, places to go and things to achieve on their own. Their entire national energy seems expended in smuggling in arms into Gaza and shooting across the border into Israel to kill innocent civilians.
When Israel gave the Jewish settlements in Gaza to Palestinians as part of a peace negotiation, it was filled with beautifully cared for homes and the most advanced agricultural greenhouses in the Mideast, a rich agricultural treasure house that could feed many thousands of people. The Palestinians trashed those greenhouses, turned them into a desert instead of enjoying their bounty. As someone who has spent many years as a greenhouse grower of rare plants, this is particularly shocking to me, as well as baffling. Why would anyone do that? It's turning a treasure into trash. And now the Obama administration, with a startling lack of judgment, is throwing good money after bad. I'm both sad and angry, because we are destroying our own reputation in the Mideast, the reputation our American soldiers so painstakingly built up with countless big and small good deeds, and their own blood, to earn the Mideast's respect. What was Obama thinking? What does he think they're going to do with those billions of dollars? Build up their industries? They don't have any. They don't produce anything, as far as I can determine. No. They're going to buy munitions with it. And shoot them at Israel. And further destabilize the Mideast, which is not very stable to begin with. This is another huge mistake by the Obama administration. He's only been President for a month. God help us all. Marianne |
