We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Just a Trifle for my Valentine: Trifle for Dessert, reposted




Tomorrow, I will have one 3 lb. steamed lobster, with home-made cucumber cole slaw, home-made potato salad with vinaigrette. Bottle or two of Oregon Chardonnay. And I will make a Trifle, all home-made (except I bought the pound cake at the supermarket). Bottom layer of pound cake soaked with rum, then drizzled with raspberry jam. Then a layer of homemade custard. Then a layer of cut-up strawberries, plus raspberries and blueberries. Then whipped cream, and then decorated with semi-sweet chocolate shavings and raspberries. Hope she likes it.


We have an English Trifle bowl like the one in the photo somewhere. I can't find it. It's somewhere buried in the basement pantry, A mere trifle to please She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed.

Menu sounds good to me, the trifle makes me think I'm back in Merrie Olde....with a meal like that she will surely be your Valentine!

Barrister ... What a lovely time you'll have trifling with your Valentine. I didn't realize that you cooked as well as doing everything you do so well. Lucky lady!

Many, many years of marriage and I still love to see the guy walk into the room! His wit delights me, his strength gives me the courage to by my best self.

As for my horse--well, he got older faster than me! He is happy too. Not lame, but no longer able to be ridden.

Recipes please. Though lobster will not go well with the ecologically-conscious locals. However, I am realistic: in the prairies, the 100-mile diet is not really great (my mother's comment - albeit indirectly - on same was that the one common prairie dish was steamed carrot pudding).
