We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Close Gitmo? OK. And then what? Laura Ingraham suggested sending them all to Barbra Streisand's neighborhood. The Obama transcript is an embarassment. The guy doesn't know what the heck he's talking about.
I have a great idea about what to do with the Guantanamo prisoners if they close Guantanamo as the Empty Suit wants to do. Make an arrangement with our good friends the Canadians to rent a portion of Ellesmere Island, a Nunavut Eskimo possession of Canada above the Arctic Circle. It's very cold there. And bleak all year round. And surrounded by hundreds of miles of frozen tundra. My husband has visited there to do an article, and he says it's not very nice or interesting up there. At all.
Gosh knows, the Canadians should be happy to lease it to us until those dippy, dangerous prisoners die. And they'll never have heat stroke again, the rest of their lives. Only in the next world will they be warm, very warm, for the rest of Eternity.
Marianne, who can solve everybody else's problems -- only not her own.
Taking up your theme MM, we could send them to Attu, which is the last island in the Aleutian archipelago. No rent required.
Here is the snippet about the weather.
The weather on Attu is typical of Aleutian weather in general...cloudy, rainy, foggy, with occasional very high winds. The weather becomes progressively worse as you travel from the easternmost islands to the west. On Attu, five or six days a week are likely to be rainy, with hardly more than eight or ten clear days a year. The rest of the time, even if rain is not falling, fog of varying density is the rule rather than the exception. The average rainfall is around 40 to 50 inches throughout the islands, with the heaviest rains experienced during fall and early winter.
Build the prison with explosives in the walls. If some of their Islamic crazies tried to invade to retrieve the prisoners, you could just detonate the whole place and the problem would be solved. They do like explosives, don't they?
There is still good money being made way up North. Have two associates who just came back at Christmas. Made 20 grand a month plus expenses for 4 months. Heard the cook makes 400 dollars a day, cooking for eight men, and the news was she was not even that good at it.
Also RE: Working up North. Don't want to sound like it is easy money there. Heard the living conditions were pretty bad and the work hours were very long and difficult, but that was ok because there was usually nothing else to do.
Meta ... if you're going to set them free in small Southern towns, try Arizona first. That state has open carry laws for its citizens, so they can quickly draw down on the reprobates if they even look sideways at the gun carrier.
Texas has concealed carry laws, which include written tests as well as weapons tests, but there are still quite a few rugged individualists who carry anyway, and most Texas citizens, myself included, have house guns which we don't have to take tests for. This fact accounts for the relative civility of our neighborhoods. "An armed society is a more civil society," as the aphorism notes. Because the b****rds don't know who's armed and who isn't.
