We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"It was about race. Nifong's motivations clearly were rooted in his need to win black votes. There were tensions between town and gown, that part was true. The narrative was properly about race, sex and class. . . . We went a beat too fast in assuming that a rape took place. . . . We just got the facts wrong. The narrative was right, but the facts were wrong."
Undersecretary of Defence Eric Edelman said this in response to Mrs. Clinton:
"Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq, much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia," Edelman wrote.
He added that "such talk understandably unnerves the very same Iraqi allies we are asking to assume enormous personal risks."
Image: 1959's Coppertone Girl is one of the most famous ads of all time. The artist used her daughter as the model. Here's their story. In 1959, the only sun block was that white zinc stuff that sailors put on their noses.
"Eating beef is less green than driving. Telegraph."
Ah, those flatulent cows again! Warming the atmosphere and threatening the existence of Al Gore and the NYT. And all because of Ray Kroc and his Big Macs. Makes one want to jump in the Hummer or Yukon and head over to the golden arches.
Just wait, however, as sooner or later, scientists who can't find honest employment will discover the diabolic evil of beans--those innocent legumes that cause massive human flatulence. Yes, the beans that so many of us crave and enjoy--not only while eating, but afterwards, away from polite company, where we can violate the noise and odor ordinances of our villages and towns to out hearts' or colons' content.
I remember when I was a teenager hanging out with other guys on the corner that we had this contest of sorts about which guy could fart the most within a given time limit.
Now, however, a security camera would probably catch us straining to win.
So an event happens. The left seizes that event and creates a narrative to suit their political needs. i.e. the Duke rape case or Dan Rathers version of Bush's National Guard record or the Plame case. The facts prove contradictory to their narrative, but thats OK because the narrative they've created is still true. This is how the MSM operates in their post-modern world. The narrative is a rationalization for them to create and believe whatever they want.
Re: Newsweek's Evan Thomas. "Our reporting was guided by our prejudices, and even though the story turned out to be false, we stand behind our prejudices". It's the proper summation of Thomas' acknowledgement.
Re: Eating beef is less green than driving. Rare please, and I'd like that to go.
There is no such thing as moderate Islam. There is no such thing as secular Islam or a secular Muslim. It's the nature of the faith to deny any separation of religion and the state or religion and society. There are numerous sects within Islam. One and all are extremes and not in the least amenable to change. Keep in mind that Islam claims that it is the perfect eternal faith for mankind. Splits have occurred and will continue to occur in Islam. Yet, reformation has not happened in nearly 1400 years and is not going to happen. Islam is carved in granite, just the way it is. No change. Allah's book is sealed.
