We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Readers know that my idea of a healthy breakfast is two coffees and sometimes a little nicotine. For adults, the idea that "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" was debunked long ago. Growing kids, of course, need food all the time including protein at breakfast.
If you do heavy labor all day, it's another matter. All I do is to work out at the gym for an hour or so every morning, and some yard work on weekends (as little as possible because I have become bored with it), and take good walks on weekends. That is sedentary.
Sometimes, though, there are occasions for a hearty breakfast.
I have always liked kippers with some eggs. In Scotland, the kippers are about a foot long. Too much. The canned kippers that you find in US supermarkets are barely OK.
And the ultimate American breakfast (South and Midwest especially): Biscuits and Gravy. Every family has its own recipe, so I won't link one. Those Bob Evans restaurants make a fine one, but I don't think they let you in unless you weigh over 250 pounds. Grits on the side are good.
To stay multicultural, I can't omit the English Breakfast. Blood sausage:
I love breakfast. I used to get out of bed twice a day for breakfast. When I was in the military I would go to be and set my alarm for midnight and get up and go to midnight meal at the chow hall. Then of course get up at 6:30 and go to breakfast before work. Yeah I ate the other two meal too. Now, at 80 YO when we are traveling I eat breakfast and for lunch if the restaurant sells breakfast all day I eat it again.
My preferred breakfast is 4 pieces of bacon, two eggs, pan fries and English muffin. Second choice is the same except pancakes in place of the muffin.
I do consider breakfast to be essential or the most important meal of the day. I think most of the people who choose to not eat breakfast are merely trying to reduce calories and there is nothing wrong with that choice. But to justify it they feel the need to denigrate breakfast. Interestingly I know people who eat dinner (supper) at 8:00 pm and they feel the need to denigrate those who eat dinner at 5:00 pm. I just think people should "own" their choices and not feel the need to blame someone else.
My Irish cousin in County Wicklow always gives me an Irish breakfast when I visit. It seems to be an English breakfast only more items, bigger and on a huge platter, with a standing offer, never taken, of a pint of Guinness with it. My wife and I share it and it's still too much.
He then takes us on a 20 mile "stroll" along some part of the Wicklow Way, which burns off most of the huge meal.
Fresh caught brook trout and eggs at the cabin on the river with my Dad (1950's). Up early to fish and then back to the cabin by 7-7:30 am for that breakfast. Last time we did the drill he was 91 and he outfished me. Miss him.
We found when visiting Ireland if we at all of the Irish breakfast (except blood pudding) we could go all day until time for another great Irish meal of some fresh seafood and their typical sides at dinner. Maybe a snack or sweet at lunch time but the full Irish filled us up and we were good to traipse around the megalithic sites.
My dad was USN back during Korea (seeved on a tender and submarine) - loved the weekends because that's when he did most of the cooking (not that my mom couldn't, but the weekend is when he took over). He had been a ship's cook and worked in his dad's cafe as a kid. Converted the recipes from pounds to household kitchen measurements his head. I was the only kid I knew who ate creamed chipped beef on toast: cornbread, baked beans, bacon and boiled eggs regularly for breakfast. I could work all day on that when I was younger and probably still could if I was so inclined.
