We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Studies about romantic relationships, which marriages supposedly are, never seem able to capture the complexities of chemistry, compatability, and partnering.
Sexual issues, financial issues, disagreements, emotional issues and frailties, etc etc all beset the basically unnatural notion of lifetime monogamous bonding. In Western cultures, committment is important cement, but how often is it, really?
Good friendships can easily last a lifetime, thank God. That's partly because you do not live with them and have to deal with their flaws every day. Friendships are essential in life, I believe. No one partner can meet all of our relational wants, supports, comraderie, and enjoyments.
Geez Louise--consider the source! The marxists in America first tore down the Protestant church. Stole the bank from the Catholic church, demanded we all accept homosexuality, and now they are trying to break up established marriages. Established marriages are the last remaining bulwark against a complete Marxist overturn of our country, our life, our way of being. Silver divorce is not the "ideal" for many liberals as it offers a last minute freedom. yada yada yada. Destroy the American family at the senior level and you have completed the destruction of this country. Many many liberal females get points for getting a woman to leave her long term marriage in search of unbridled freedom! You have liberated one more. If you have not seen this pattern developing just go back to watch the pattern growing since Al and Mrs. Gore split up. Those two were in a long term political marriage when the Mrs. said she was done. That gave the idea and the go ahead to put this strategy into the feminist toolkit. Stop worrying about if it is good--start reporting on what can be done to make long term marriages less vulnerable and more satisfying for both. Sheesh--get out of the dang habit of blindly following CNN.
I couldn't agree more. My wife of thirty-five years and I are only trotting after you yet, but God willing we might match you. Pair-bonding for life is our natural way of being, as much as it is for the swallows nesting around our house. May you and your wife be blessed with many more years together.
Bringing up the rear with only 32 years of marriage, but from this perspective it's the search for novelty in relationships that seems unnatural...and highly dissatisfying. No wonder these people are so unhappy and angry.
There's an interesting speech toward the end of "My Dinner with Andre" where Andre Gregory talks very movingly and insightfully about how "the chase" for a new romantic interest is always the same but when you enter long-term relationship you embark on a journey with no map, no signposts, no guidance. And that, he says, is the true adventure.
The older I get, the more I understand that speech.
