We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Neil Ferguson, The "Scientist" Whose Crap Models Panicked the World, Forced to Resign From Government Job After Breaking His Own Social-Distancing Rules to Have Sex With His Side-Piece
It is immature to blame anybody for Acts of God, like hurricanes and diseases, but I'll go immature here to blame that guy Ferguson, and especially China for closing China to Wuhan city but letting the Wuhan people fly all over the world. Ferguson cried Fire in a crowded theater, and China seeded the world. "Accidentally on purpose?" We'll never know. Regardless, governments destroying our economies, I've decided, was an overreaction. This is not The Plague.

Re: 78 Percent of College Students
If it's anything like what I saw my last two decades in public service, a third of these are true believers, another third have allowed themselves to be cowed into supporting this, and the other third are keeping their heads down, knowing there's a rapidly approaching expiration date on their college daze.
Samaritans Purse clearly believe that they have a right to an opinion. Therefore they must be taught a lesson, all of them left broke and broken and their homes burned and the ashes salted. After which anyone who speaks their name will be ostracized and fired from their job.
Meanwhile they're still in my hometown building new homes--gratis--for people who lost theirs in the 2017 hurricane.
" Colorado River Delta Ecosystem Blooms After Historic Water Release": Surprahz, surprahz! Of course it did.
Poll: 78 Percent of College Students Want to Restrict ‘Threatening’ Ideas: Not Ready For College, clearly. Scared, or horrified...
I'm sure they're well aware of Our Lord's advice to the Apostles to shake the dust of those cities that reject them off their feet.
As indeed they have also been doing in my area in the FL Panhandle in the wake of Hurricane Michael.
In my dealings with them I've found them to be caring, compassionate, professional, and helpful.
NY's "elite" are a disgrace.
At the same time, 97% claim to support Trump's proposal to deny funding from colleges that restrict free speech. Your students, quite frankly, don't strike me as particularly intelligent.

The ad, he said, “purposely and deceptively edits the clip . . .
If anyone knows anything about video deception it's CNN. The Counterfeit News Network.
Massachusetts now requires that everyone wear a mask when they are outside. Now if the mask was actually effective would it matter to the mask wearers that someone else didn't wear a mask? If your mask protects you what do you care what others do? This isn't about protection because the science tells us these cheapo masks don't do what they claim they do. This is about the state, the politicians telling you what to do. It is an exercise in misuse of power. It is their attempt to throw out the constitution. Imagine if they can make you wear this mask which doesn't work what else they can make you do on a false premise. Wake up, your politicians have become Nazis and they are turning your police into goose stepping Brown Shirts. This is not accidental.
...116,000 Americans Died In A Pandemic. That was the Asian flu in mid '57. When it hit, I was a youngish lead scientist working in south Texas, winding up a multi-year study of varying temperatures, atomspheric pressures and such on a particular systemic allergy in mice and guinea pigs. As I recall, it was only occasionally mentioned in the press and over radio, and there were no lifestyle restrictions or shudowns that I was aware of.
No effort made to flatten the curve or to protect those most vulnerable and 116,000 deaths in a year. If they had the treatments available to them then that we have today would that number of deaths be considerably lower? If it could be lowered with specific medical and social treatments, should it be?
The Covid-19 looks like it will have a much great toll in a year than the Asian flu had. Probably 5 times as large and if we do nothing perhaps 10 times as large. Should we than do nothing???
re Should we than do nothing???
Should we do something, even if it is wrong?
We did something based on the information and data at hand, and continue to improve upon it as the information and data warrant. I think this is pretty much what we have done up to the end of April - 75,000 dead in 9 weeks, still racking around 2,000 dead per day is neither imaginary nor insignificant.
But now other considerations are also asserting themselves, and sensible changes are running into political agendas at the grass roots level, unsurprisingly in dominantly blue-shaded areas. And the only official push-back against over-reach is unequivocally in red shaded areas.
I wonder who will figure out first that police forces represent a minuscule portion of greater society - and that it's impossible to police a society that is forced to choose compliance over base freedoms. What happens when the populace gets motivated? The tyrant rulers may soon become the over-ruled. We've seen a few sheriffs that are wise enough to step back.
"This is not The Plague."
This was never about the disease itself. It is about the fact that healthcare systems were inadequate and unprepared to respond to it. If you can control and slow down its spread, then patients can be adequately treated and fatalities minimized. If it overwhelms the healthcare system, that's when the spread goes out of control and very sick patients and deaths skyrocket.
Now that hospitals are more prepared we can re-open slowly, but the fact is that by re-opening we are going to see more and more people get sick, but the hope is it will be at a rate we can handle.
Here is a simple graphic to explain how masks work:
Why You Should Wear Facemasks
Posit a viral RNA bloom in your throat; little space invaders broadcast (aerosol or glob) in search of a new host. Without a mask the broadcast endangers others over space and time, but with a masked the little invaders are recirculated adding to your viral load. Masks everywhere is a meat ax approach, and wrong.
Corollary; get out save yourself. Public health is the sum of individual's health.
It occurs to me that the people who are really serious about global warming should buy nice boats, not homes fixed on a seashore somewhere.
"The Covid-19 looks like it will have a much great toll in a year than the Asian flu had. Probably 5 times as large and if we do nothing perhaps 10 times as large. Should we than do nothing???"
Your excitement is palpable.
Yes of course! And I have indeed heard that theory. SO then only those who are actually ill should wear the mask, right???
A serious question:
HIV is much more serious than Covid-19. Not only do more people die from it but those who don't die suffer from serious effects of the disease. BUT the legal and medical system have decided that IF you give someone else this virus knowingly and in many cases intentionally that no legal or moral price is paid for that act. Why then is it so terrible to "possibly" put someone at risk of getting Covid-19 simply by using your right to be out of your house while at the same time someone who gives another human a terrible disease (HIV) is treated as innocent of any wrong?
I was a high school student during that epidemic. Went dutifully off to school every day and watched the "absentee" count rise while hoping school would be cancelled. Finally it was and - wouldn't you know it - the flu caught me and I spent the next week or so in bed. By the time I recovered, school was back in session. I was not impressed.
I was a 6 y/o and I came down with the Asian Flu.
I remember it as being a very tough illness, with delirium, vomiting, fevers and sweats.
Pretty rough and I remember it to this day.
