We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The News Junkie made a good point today when he wondered why any nation would voluntarily join an Empire and sacrifice their autonomy and uniqueness and freedom. Aren't those things more valuable than anything that could be gained? Well, particularly for the Eastern European countries, which only a little more than a decade ago cast out their Soviet occupiers, and are now being asked to join another growing imperial power, this time of their own volition. The promise that is being dangled is that of a little economic security for their forfeiture of their sovereignty, but if it's the Western European model that these nations wish to emulate, they are dead wrong.
Furthermore, bringing on board the Ukraine, Belarus and perhaps even Turkey would create a situation much like the current reunified Germany, except on a continental scale, as the wealthy nations of the west would be forced to subsidize entire national economies in the east. And if your economy DOES unexpectedly take off, like Ireland you'll find yourself immediately transformed into yet another wretched multicultural haven, bereft of cultural uniqueness, as every last Chang and Muhammad take advantage of the EU's nonexistent internal border controls to descend on your nation and take all those jobs that the natives "just don't want" anymore. In my opinion, Eastern Europe needs to find its own route to prosperity and national revival - casting your lot with the likes of France and the Netherlands is a sure route to long-term dissolution.
