We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Who knew that "Merry Christmas" was conservative code for "FU?" Clearly, I haven't been sending out enough coded messages....
Oh, it can be.
And the author is exactly the kind of person at whom it would be aimed at in that way. After a 5-minute diatribe about how
Santa Claus is a corporate consumerist symbol used by the patriarchy to keep the masses in eternal debt servitude to the guy ringing the bell in front of the Salvation Army kettle, I'd give her a "Well, Merry Christmas to you, too" in exactly that spirit.
I'm a recent transplant to the sort-of-South, and I'm learning the nuances of the local dialect. Think of it as how "Well, bless your heart" can be used in much the same way.
Conservative code. Well, it's Amanda Marcotte. Projection. She is so consumed by hatred that she sees it in everyone else. It's all those other people who are hateful, not her. Like many other haters, she uses cleverness to disguise it. Well, disguise it to herself, anyway, and those who share her tribalism. Everyone else picks it up after a few essays.
Re: Hallmark Channel
Looking closely, the objection is not that their schmaltzy films are propaganda; it's that they are the wrong kind of propaganda.
They're hyper-targeted to the kind of suburban mom who makes the decisions about what brand of laundry detergent, disposable diapers, or SUV will be purchased in a middle to upper-middle class home. The same women who 20 years ago might have identified with the Sex and the City women, but don't anymore. The kind who after putting the kids to bed want to have half a glass of pino while turning off their brain and watching nice things happen to nice people. They're unabashedly stylized and formulaic, probably with scripts generated by a mad-libs algorithm.
It's entertainment for people who care about things, but not right now.
Just wait until someone tells her, "Happy birthday" as that's minimizing the pain and trauma her birth giver endured as she expelled her into this life of pain and marginalization; and, by extension it minimizes the experience she herself shares with her birth giver by virtue of her, assuming at this point, gender expression.
re Impossible burgers are made of what?
An article that is well worth the read.
re Brussels Chaos: Spain Follows Poland In Shock Threat To Quit EU
I would speculate that the Brexit idea is intriguing some of the other EU members, thus the threats.
One wonders if a successful Brexit will encourage other EU members to follow suit?
Her statement was incredible "Hallmark movies, with their emphasis on returning home and the pleasures of the small, domestic life, also send a not-at-all subtle signal of disdain for cosmopolitanism and curiosity about the larger world, which is exactly the sort of attitude that helps breed the kind of defensive white nationalism that we see growing in strength in the Donald Trump era."
These are the same people who want to be able to jail you for hate crimes/speech and they get to decide what hate speech is. The greatest value of the internet is that it exposes people like this for what they are. Imagine a world where someone like this is the Speaker of the House. Oh! Wait, you don' have to imagine that we already have that.
The EU was a bad idea and very poorly implemented. It was designed to become an oppressive government run by unelected elites who have little to no interest in the lives or fortunes of the citizens. It would be difficult to prove that the EU leaders are not actively pursuing cultural and economic suicide.
You won’t see me eating one of those boob growing patties. Gross.
Re: All the media figures who lied to us about the FISA warrants
One of those who lied is Jonah Goldberg, who I used to respect a great deal. I haven't kept up with him since Trump so I checked on Townhall.com, presumably a major outlet for his columns. It turns out that they have not published a column from him since September 27th (when he wrote that he had no doubt that Trump pressured Zelenskiy to investigate Biden, the lesser, but he generously considered that Trump shouldn't be impeached for it). That seems like a long time no to publish one of their more prominent columnists. Maybe Townhall couldn't stomach his columns anymore. Maybe Goldberg's laptop crashed and hasn't gotten a new one to write new columns. Maybe Goldberg has eschewed writing for another profession - welding?, or maybe he's on an extended vacation (another cruise with Bill Crystal?).
One would have thought that a member of the conservative media, previously in good standing, would at least have the decency to tell the followers he had left that he had been wrong or that the sources he trusted were liars and he was duped. On the other hand, maybe he's (become?) just like the rest of the media and he'll soon unapologetically onto yet another hoax that bashes Trump. One wonders what his mother, Lucianne, who was a fierce warrior for impeaching Clinton thinks about all this.
Her is an intentional Christmas F-U:
When I read something like this I am unable to explain how a large company could choose to spit in the eye of their customers.
Showtime says the new season of The L Word features “a new group of diverse, self-possessed LGBTQIA+ characters experiencing love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success in LA.”
I think Showtime means "self-obsessed" characters.
Well then let's counter that "cosmopolitan" is liberal code for educated, urban, white (but has a black friend at work), upper-middle class woman who doesn't grasp that civilization exists between the Alleghenies and the San Gabriels.
The kind that doesn't find it hilarious that someone paid $120,000 for a banana duck taped to a wall.
I've been more intentional in expressing "Merry Christmas". It's the holiday I celebrate, and I'm not going to adopt the mealy-mouth "Happy Holidays" and cringe-inducing references to the 'festive season' (the latest euphemism adopted by our corporate structure) in an attempt to appease people who are determined to be offended by any references to Western European Christian culture.
I had a similar response to Jonah Goldberg's choice to go full never Trump. He is a shining example of what a faux conservative is. He and the Rino Republicans, would rather be in the minority. They know how to kowtow to the left when the left are the majority but they have no clue how to lead or actually implement conservative policies. I think Mr. Goldberg sees himself as an intellectual who is at his best expounding on the faults of his opponents. I doubt that he was EVER a full supporter of the entire constitution as written and it's original intent. If Jonah Goldberg had been George Washington we would still be under a king or queen of England. What he should do is write great Elizabethan novels and get out of politics.
The EU is just Germany doing what it thinks it's best at, conquering. They're just trying it without military aggression this time. Watch what happens once the Anglo-sphere trade deals start getting signed in the post-Brexit world: US/UK/Aus/Can. The countries that have been suffering through the crisis of Persian/North African opportunity migrants, and have done something about it, will soon want to follow. Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, to name a few potential converts, and maybe even Austria.
Check out the rest of your food.
Suspected to be one cause of the feminization of men in the developed world (e.g., Pajama Boy). Birth control hormones in the water supply is another.
I must take the author to task, I am an certified organic dairy farmer, cows with no horns are NOT gmo, it is a result of natural breeding to bovines that are polled, polled cattle have existed for thousands of years, (see polled Hereford beef cattle) it is a natural trait, my Holstein herd is 90+% polled, it is allowed in dairy production and is a result of breeding for the trait
I agree with the author that fake meat is NOT good for you but why does he have to veer off and attack anyone who opposes gmo's especially when the "fact" he raises is bunk
The EU made good sense as an internal European trade bloc.
It makes no sense as a supranational political bloc.
Amen on polled cattle. People outside of agriculture would be amazed by the cumulative body of collective knowledge and science that is involved.
Bovines are one of the finest animals that God put in this world
The Ring article is kinda bogus, or at least unfairly targets Ring. They picked a bad password they used elsewhere. Same approach could lead to compromise with online banking just as well as with Ring.
without bovines people would starve, they can covert grass to meat, grass that people CANNOT eat, grass and legumes that are good for soil rebuilding and carbon holding, and they fertilize as they go, much of the grass land would not support grain or would go bad from intensive grain growth.
Christopher - when faced with "Happy Holidays", I respond with "and a Happy Holy Day to you too".
