We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
IIRC, that first appeared on Bing's 1974 Christmas special. in 1982 MTV brought back the scene as a music video to beef up the limited "rock" video holiday content available then.

There are a couple of different versions of the story as to how David Bowie came to be on the special, but they seem to center around Bowie thinking his mother would like it if he sang with Crosby.
IIRC, they wrote and recorded the song in two or three days, and kind of thought of it as a throwaway. The on-set recording was done to a solo piano accompaniment, and neither was really impressed by it until the orchestration was added later.
After that the song kind of got lost, until someone at MTV remembered Bowie had done it when they were looking for holiday content in their first year of operation. They had the scene edited and showed it during the season.
It's popularity with multiple generations led to it being released as a single the following year, and it's been a staple since.
