We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Rotisserie Chickens: I don't know how they do it; I can't buy an uncooked chicken for what they sell the cooked ones for...and I sure as hell can't raise one myself for $4.99. Back in my hippie days we used to raise chickens until we figured out how much it was costing us for feed and fencing. Each month we were spending more on chicken food than food for ourselves. The article is right, though: When I buy a rotisserie chicken at the supermarket, I always purchase some potato salad or cole slaw to go with it. Those cost as much (or more) than the chicken.
Re: Black Holes
A major issue I'm starting to have with a lot of modern physics is that the demarcation between "is" and "can be modeled as" is eroding to the point where the equations are taking on an untestable reality of their own.
the whole idea that the definitions of "closed universe" and "black Hole" tended to merge for small universes and large black holes has bee around at least since I first learned it in the late 1980s.
" Op-Ed By Trump Pal Published In WSJ Calls On Trump To Ditch Pence For Haley". They can't stand Pence because he is an openly Christian man. If I remember correctly wasn't Haley kind of never Trumper? She did a good job in her last position, but I don't want her to replace Pence.
I’ve watched a number of How the Universe Works thinking, I am ridiculed for believing in God? Some of the ideas presented have quite the imagination behind them.
Elizabeth Warren is one weird woman.
Poor Peggy Noonan. Lost all respect for her many years ago.
I for one, don’t believe Trump will ever deport illegals in mass numbers. An amnesty deal will be coming in his second term. If Trump doesn’t win, amnesty will be coming. Hope I am wrong, but that is what it feels like to me.
I have a similar difficulty with using the word "research" interchangeably with wild-blue-say speculation. Not that I object to the speculation, it's fascinating stuff that may open profitable avenues for investigation and thought, but it gets harder and harder to keep track of what parts of the speculation are tethered in any way to observation.
Being a cosmologist has to be a great gig. You can say anything outrageous about the universe you like and typically no one can say with certainty that you're wrong.

Yes JC, I believe you are right about Pence and Haley being a never Trumper.
IIRC when Haley was governor of SC, she had the CSA flag pulled from the Capitol grounds within 24 hours of the demand made by the Left.
I believe that capitulation to be a revealing insight on her character.
Anyone caving to leftist demands that quickly shouldn't be in a position of power in the GOP in my view.
So now that UC Santa Cruz has agreed to take down the mission bell, everybody is happy and we shall hear no more about this, right? Surely now that their grievances have been addressed the professional grievance-mongers won't just come up with new demands, will they? It's not like they're Danes seeking the Dane-geld or anything. I'm sure everything will work out just fine.
Dump Pence for Haley is the most shallow and craven idea, blatantly playing the " woman " card. That is 180 from Trump's appeal. Stop with the PC crap. Haley is a reluctant neverTrumper turned weak go-along to further her ambitions, IMO. Not gonna win in 2024 with that.
I'm not certain that Haley is eligible as I can't find proof that her parents were U.S. citizens before she was born. If we give up the "natural-born citizen" requirement, we are in big trouble given the number of immigrants, refugees and illegal aliens leaking over our borders as they do not necessarily bring the devotion to the U.S. Constitution required for America to remain that exceptional home to rule of law and individual rights that is being trampled by totalitarians.
Haley did OK at the U.N., but she definitely was a never-Trumper and stomped on the history of her state while governor at the whim of every progressive trying to rewrite that history for political purposes. Facts are facts. Just because one can burn books and remove statues doesn't mean the events and memories never happened.
Trump better deport the illegals because the freebies lined up by the progressives at state, local and federal levels are breaking the back of our economy. We have veterans and mentally-ill citizens going without care while food, medical, housing, clothing and cash stipends are distributed to those breaking over our borders.
Note that the summer breakfast/lunch programs for youth 18 and younger have started up again as the PTB believe parents cannot be responsible for feeding their children despite food stamps augmented by the food depositories, church pantries, restaurant donations, USDA silos, and, now, the post office collecting staples for distribution. "The Plantation Mentality" will never die, but be expanded with new slaves grown by Pelosi's Progressives lax immigration laws.
My siblings and I were completely satisfied with PB&J sandwiches and a glass of milk throughout the years...and after age five, we made those lunches ourselves.
Give them garden seeds. Make them grow their own food.
I just finished reading a book (fiction) but based on the SC
Eugenics program utilized by social workers on some of the welfare cases.
re B Hammer
I agree with you. I don't think Trump will ever deport illegals in large numbers.
Trump got my attention early in the primaries when he said he would deport, "all of them." While I doubted that claim I thought he would stem the flow to a trickle. Instead it has only become worse under Trump. He got ZERO help from the GOP leadership and has been able to do next to nothing on his own. The Army even flipped him off when he wanted to move troops to the border.
The whole dynamic is now morbidly fascinating. A tidal wave of illegals coming over the border. Meanwhile, even lefties are becoming concerned and yet no real effort is being made to enforce the law and stem the flow.
Nothing like watching your country disappear under the approving gaze of the Ruling Class.
re UCSC folds, will remove ‘deeply painful’ bell from campus
Because there is always one more artifact to ban.
Where will it all end?
I don't mention that because I agree with it, but feel we've gone too far the other way.
welfare for everyone!
I am deeply pained, and hurt by the presence of UCSC and think it should be removed, expunged, nay extirpated from the earth.
Getting rid of all the murals of George Washington?
Check out Communist China. They pretty much destroyed their entire culture. We're on the same trajectory.
Plantation mentality - maybe.
I think if it more as "Pathological Altruism". "We CAN help them, so we SHOULD help them, whether they NEED it or not."
