We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

re Vaunted Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is damaged goods now
Methinks this is wishful thinking on the part of Monica.
Her Westchester origins were already known.
Monica says, Can't Democrats get anything right? Voters don't like phonies.
Apparently she has forgotten one Barack Hussein 0bama and how far his political career advanced.
Perhaps she won't get far in politics but it is too early to write her off.
Vaunted Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is damaged goods now
That Ocasio-Cortez graduated high school in Yorktown was not a secret. After her father died, Ocasio-Cortez worked three jobs to help the family ward off foreclosure. Her mother worked as a housekeeper.
Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had a message for a critic who incorrectly attacked her background: "Try Google."
Who was it again, that was advertising that they were the Girl With Roots In The Bronx? Tell us how much of your life-affirming formative identity was defined from the time you were 1 through 5 years old, then. Phony is as phony does. She will easily take her district, but that's because she has the correct DNA as compared to the Party Hack Bolillo that was running on tradition and comfort. That's Politics. Pointing out Phoney Baloney on Pretenders is fair game.
Aggie: who was it again, that was advertising that they were the Girl With Roots In The Bronx?
She does have roots in the Bronx, and she commuted to visit her extended family there after they moved to Yorktown. Again, none of this is a secret.
Yeah, that's an interestingly convoluted take, but I like your thinking and I want you to keep it up - at least until November.. A few visits and a Christmas card list with the right zip codes doesn't equate to "roots". Accumulated life experience and formative learning in an immersive neighborhood is what equates to roots. She's a suburb girl and a Phoney - she'll go far.
I'm not sure how she's "damaged goods" - an intellectual elitist claiming to speak for the common workers all the while knowing common workers are too stupid to know what's for their own good and must have the intellectual elites to run their lives for them. She's got a bright future as a progressive with an outlook like that.
Jerryskids: an intellectual elitist
Sure, a graduate of Boston U, who worked to help support the family, who's still paying student loans, whose mother cleaned toilets to support the family, who a year ago worked as a bartender; she's an elitist.
Hitlers mother cleaned toilets to support the family too. Stalin's mother cleaned toilets to support the family. I see a trend here.
Hitler's mother was the wife of a civil servant.
Stalin's mother was the wife of a shoemaker, but was abused and left him, eventually holding a position in a couture shop. Neither would be considered to be of the elite.
Backfire: Trump soars 5 points in IBD-TIPP poll after Democrats go rabid
This is the sort of straw-grasping up with which you should not put!
Back to your sandbox, kiddiez.
Ben Shapiro drops the HAMMER on Kamala Harris
The Trump Administration has separated legal asylum seekers.
The law gives wide discretion to the executive with regards to immigrants. Trump had decided to separate families, but did no planning whatsoever for the logistics involved, much less account for the damage done to families for such a policy.
Zach, how much logistical planning did Obama put into his cages? And how much havoc did he place on illegals breaking the law bringing their families into the US?
Obama did provide space plankets for them, so I suppose it's all A-OK.
Dave: how much logistical planning did Obama put into his cages?
The Obama Administration was dealing with an exogenous problem, a sudden flow of underage refugees. There was no choice but to provide them shelter, and the effort was slapdash and overwhelmed. They did not separate families except under special circumstances.
What Trump did was create a situation by separating children from the parents who accompanied them. It was avoidable, and certainly something for which plans could have been made.
Good to see Zzzz finally admit Obama did it too.
Uh, but uh, that was different.
Back to your sandbox, kiddiez.
Ask the Clattering Soros Robot(s) if it(s) knows why these separations have occurred for years*. While the CSR(s) has been testing its Media Hysteria Resonance Unit lately, apparently its Pedantry Module prevents its busted-to-hell Because History Matters! programming from ever being completed.
*Whether or not the CSR(s) ever searches its failing silicon for 10 IF illegal alien GOTO 20 *human trafficking* and related topics pertinent to regular normal human people persons is unknown. Regular normal human people persons realize that the common inability to assess a bloody damn parent and thus establish how to house a completely unidentifiable illegal minor for his or her own damn safety is but one of thousands of areas where the CSR(s) deviates from simple mechanical and perceptual reality and descends yet again into simple bullshit...
That does not accurately describe what happened. Trump ONLY enforced the law. Obama was more than happy to simply let the illegals go free. This CAUSED his 'exogenous problem' because it encourged more illegals to enter with their children because it was seen as a sure pass into the country. The courts are the original cause of the problem with their ruling that these illegal children could only be held for 20 days. Why? We hold American children away from the parents for years if conditions warrant it. The ONLY way to discourage illegal immigration is to make the process undesirable to the immigrant. Two simple changes would permanently fix this problem in seconds. 1. if you are caught entering illegally you are booked, photoed, fingerpriinted and deported within 24 hours and because of this crime you can never enter the country again under any circumstances. 2. Ditto if caught within the country.
OneGuy: Trump ONLY enforced the law.
Trump used executive discretion, discretion given under the law, to separate families.
OneGuy: This CAUSED his 'exogenous problem' because it encourged more illegals to enter with their children because it was seen as a sure pass into the country.
Again, the problem during the Obama Administration was unaccompanied minors, not adults with their children. They approached the problem by educating people that simply sending their children to the border doesn't automatically qualify them for asylum.
OneGuy: if you are caught entering illegally you are booked, photoed, fingerpriinted and deported within 24 hours and because of this crime you can never enter the country again under any circumstances.
People have the right to due process. Many of these immigrants have reasonable asylum claims.
Well no, Obama announced in 2014 he was going to break the immigration laws by executive fiat and refuse to enforce them, after Congress refused to give him that power. The illegal invasion ensued, not only from Central America, but Mexico and other places. This is one of the many things for which Obama should have been impeached, but Congress was too weak to do so.
Other illegal immigration actions such as DACA and DAPA also occurred. By contrast, Trump is simply "faithfully executing the law," as required by the Constitution and his oath of office.
Obama created this mess, not Trump. Trump is only trying to carry out the law to correct the immigration nightmare created by Obama.
Jim: Obama announced in 2014 he was going to break the immigration laws by executive fiat and refuse to enforce them
Um, that's not what the article you cited says. In fact, Obama asked Congress for additional powers to send people back to their home countries.
House Democrat server vanishes.
This just might be the political crime and coverup of the century. Imran Awant, the Democrats IT guy, just got the best possible deal from the DOJ after they dismissed dozens of crimes he committed including spying and collusion. Something smells to high heaven here. Was Debbie Wasserman Schultz complicit in the spying or just the coverup. What is it the Democrats ere hiding? Look quick because this is being swept under the rug as we speak never to see the light of day again.
I believe he was being tried on bank fraud and crimes associated to that one issue. More is coming.
If this had been a GOP server, the Dems and their media minions would be screaming to high heaven. But it wasn't, so...crickets.
Ocasio-Cortez won largely because the district lines had been redrawn and she is Hispanic. Both the left and the right made too much of the idea that her victory is socialist. The far left misattributed her victory in order to puff their feathers.
@ Zachriel, yes she did work in the Bronx, including advocacy with an Hispanic nonprofit after finishing college. Are you saying she did not grow up in Yorktown Height privilege? Try Google.
As to whether she is now damaged, I agree with the commenters who say that this will not matter to most of her constituents, nor to her national audience. I am trying to think of the Democrat whose career was ruined by being exposed as a fraud? Al Franken, maybe, mostly because of timing. In a different year, he'd still be Senator.
Assistant Village Idiot: Are you saying she did not grow up in Yorktown Height privilege?
They moved because the schools were better, but the family had their feet in both communities. That formed the basis of her campaign, having seen that zip code helps determine one's destiny.
Assistant Village Idiot: As to whether she is now damaged, I agree with the commenters who say that this will not matter to most of her constituents, nor to her national audience.
Then we are in agreement on that point.
Assistant Village Idiot: I am trying to think of the Democrat whose career was ruined by being exposed as a fraud?
No fraud by Ocasio-Cortez is evident.
Come on team Z, are you so naive or misinformed that you cannot understand the use of "a fraud" in this context? One of you all should be able to figure out which of these definitions AVI is using.
1. deceit or trickery perpetrated for profit or to gain some unfair or dishonest advantage.
2. a particular instance of such deceit or trickery: mail fraud; election frauds.
3. something that is not what it pretends.
4. a deceitful person; impostor.
None of those definitions properly apply, nor does conflating the various definitions constitute an argument.
Whether it constitutes an argument is irrelevant. My question is are you capable of discerning what definition AVI used. It's a common practice when folks are having a conversation, to clear up uncertainty or misunderstanding. You have clearly engaged with some definition of frauf in mind. Which is it?
Another typical example of the kiddiez' being obtuse AND abtruse.
That's all they have when they've lost the argument.
Earle: My question is are you capable of discerning what definition AVI used.
As already stated, none of the definitions properly apply. Assistant Village Idiot addresses this question below.
I don't recall seeing anything in her campaign literature that highlighted her childhood privilege. She isn't obligated to, but it does leave one open to the charge of not being entirely candid.
Assistant Village Idiot: She isn't obligated to, but it does leave one open to the charge of not being entirely candid.
So the definition of fraud you're using is the "not being entirely candid" definition.
Assistant Village Idiot: I don't recall seeing anything in her campaign literature that highlighted her childhood privilege.
The primary theme of her campaign was based on the differences she saw between Yorktown and the Bronx. Here's a typical example from before the election:
Queens Tribune: Her mother is from Puerto Rico and her father hails from the Bronx. When Ocasio-Cortez was growing up in the early 1990s, she said that her parents were disappointed with the public schools in the Bronx and had no money for a private school. After her extended family chipped in, her parents were able to put a down payment on a small home in Yorktown.
However, her father still owned a small business in the Bronx and her entire family was there. Ocasio-Cortez said that visiting the Bronx and living in Yorktown taught her about income inequality.
“Even at a really young age, I saw what my schools had and what my family in the Bronx had,” she said. “The idea of inequity became apparent to us, even as children.”
“The idea of inequity became apparent to us, even as children.”
But apparently not as an adult.
You can't think of a Democrat politician whose career was ruined by fraud because there are none. Al Franken was undone by the exposure of past boorish behavior at the perfectly wrong time.
The most recent Democrat fraudster I can think of is MA senator Elizabeth Warren. Her career at Harvard and in politics was advanced by fraud, not harmed by it.
Do you mean, criminal convictions? Jesse Jackson Junior? Anthony Weiner? Corine Brown? Chaka Fattah? Laura Richardson? William Jefferson? Frank Ballance? James Traficant? Rod Blagovich? Mel Reynolds? Carl Perkins? Walter Fauntroy? Dan Rostenkowski? Joe Kolter? How am I doing so far?
There are plenty of Republicans represented on the list too. A good reason to throw the bums out and demand term limits.
Re: The political wisdom of kids, seems like this is just another version of the "clown nose on, clown nose off" argument. They'll tell you these kids are wiser than adults but when you poke holes in the arguments, well, what do you expect, they're just little kids! Seems kind of churlish to be arguing with children, doesn't it? But of course it's not the children you're arguing with, it's the arguments they're making and those arguments might be cute coming from a kid but they are (or should be) embarrassingly juvenile for an adult.
