We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Relieved that we have Trumpster
The guy may be an obnoxious amoral jerk with bad taste, no verbal filter and lacking in any deep curiosity, but consider what he has done and is doing and don't be a snob. Good instincts beat deep knowledge every time. Facing down the Chinese, North Koreans, and Russians, pushing back against Mexican invasion, growing jobs like crazy, lowering taxes, and driving the Left mad. Food stamp, "disability", and welfare numbers are going down fast. All good things for America. Keeping his promises as best he can. MAGA.
Manufacturing Industry Has Strongest Jobs Increase in Three Years. Jobs are going begging, for a change. All-skate time. With the will to work, you can find it.
Hillary: America in a really bad spot. Really? I don't see that. She still does not get that many people voted for the lesser of two evils. Also, that many voted for him because he is fearless. He didn't need the job. He is doing remarkably well as an amateur, and his polls reflect that.
Why Are Americans Suddenly So Optimistic About The Future?
I'll vote for him next time, if he is willing to bother with more of this annoying and thankless job. My (Massachusetts "working class" Democrat) parents have come to admire him for what he has been doing despite his style not being their cup of tea.

Hilarity needed the job to hide the massive corruption she and Bill persist in perpetuating around the world. It will take eight years and then some to unravel her evil doings.
I agree with you 100%. People like backing a winner -- and if you ignore the media screaming, he's winning for America and Americans.
Politicians, especially Democrats, sense that things are not going well for them and interpret this as sensing things are not going well for their party. This is often partly true. They then extend this into the interpretation that things are not going well for America. This is always more dubious.
Remember that when one tells you "this is the most important election of your lifetime." What they likely mean is it's the most important election of their lifetime.
In a greater extreme, it is how dictators come to see a complete overlap between their needs and the country's. Are Hillary or Obama there? No, but you can see the attitude pretty clearly.
I too think Trump is a man with poor manners and poorer taste. I did not vote for him because of those traits; I voted for Trump because of Stormy Daniels. Of course I did not know about the alleged dalliance with Stormy Daniels nor would I vote for him because he might have cheated on his wife with a porn star. No, I voted for him because he can withstand the scandal.
In the primaries, I voted for Cruz because he fit best with my politics. What I figured out after that was that even if Cruz was right most of the time, he could still be destroyed or at least neutralized. We saw this with McCain, Bush, Romney, & al. No matter who the Republicans put up against the Democrats, they (the party and the candidates) were more concerned about their reputations than being effective avatars for us and our rights. They cowered before political correctness, before defamation, before bullies who knew how to manipulate them. They never defended us against accusations of bigotry and hatred. They never called out the bigotry and hatred from our enemies.
So to paraphrase Breitbart, "F**k you....Trump."
My 'style' is honesty and living up to promises. Trump has won that HANDS DOWN over any politician I've ever voted for. Couldn't care less about the rest.
Trump has grown up in the school of hard knocks and just doesn't care what his critics say or think. I don't think there's a politician in America who could do what he's doing. They have all been politicians so long they've forgotten what it's like to be men (sorry ladies) I had very low expectations for him but I think he's doing great! I hope we get 7 more years of him because It'll take that many to overcome the Bush, Clinton and Obama years. They were all polished politicians and look where it got us. I'm already worried about what comes after Trump because Mike Pence, who I think is a good man, can't wear Trumps shoes.
Scott Adams, the Dilbert cartoon guy and one of the few people to call the presidential election correctly, predicted that over time mainstream opinion would shift from "I hate Trump" to "He's a jerk, but I like what he is doing". Seems to be happening.
Some of the insults you throw at him are reasons why he is able to do the things you applaud. He is the President of the United States, who are you, News Junkie? Are you the "jerk".
"The guy may be an obnoxious amoral jerk with bad taste, no verbal filter and lacking in any deep curiosity,"
Or so the media wants us to believe. I voted for a 'moral man' once - good ol' Jimmy C. At best he was... ineffective.
Trump's gotten a divorce! Wooooo. Trump's used bad language! Wooooo. Trump has bad taste! Wooooo. Trump has no verbal filter! Well, so?
The big thing about Trump is that he's EFFECTIVE. He HAD to get things done, actually ACCOMPLISHED, instead of making very sincere promises that never get kept as our political class does. Now he's slamming head on into a cultural instituion which places NO value on accomplishments, and every value on being seen as 'sincere' in your attempts and promises.
Bill oozed sincerity. So did Bush. Obama... we were constantly harangued on how it would be RACIST to NOT vote for this intelligent, cultured, amazing, wonderful, incredible person - despite him never having actually accomplished anything major aside from getting voted into office as an Illinois state senator, and a US senator. From Illinois, a state controlled by the Chicago machine.
And the Rs put up people who gracefully lost, because they'd be racist to actually win.
So - Trump. I'll take him ANY day over our ever-so-cultured Beltway elite. HE will get things done, while the Beltway elite will preen and posture and promise - and screw us over while telling us they're 'helping' us out.
Because after having been kicked in the metaphorical nuts repeatedly by people who are 'helping' us, it's a REAL pleasure to NOT be kicked repeatedly by Trump.
I supported Trump because I thought the rest of the GOP candidates were a bunch of midgets who would be walked over by Her Awfulness. Just listening to them during debates and speeches, you could tell they had already been programmed to give the politically correct answer and had no independent thinking going on in their heads.
Hillary would have destroyed them, just like the Democrats have traditionally done with GOPe and RINO nominees. They walk right into the machine gun fire every time. Trump, however, started firing first and he kept on firing, and he's still firing.
So far, Trump has far exceeded my expectations. You know he's hitting home because the leftist Fake News rhetoric just increases every day. Hopefully it does not come to the point where the Democrats try to overthrow the government by phony charges, but I half expect we are going to get to that.
The fact that the "Russian" allegations and investigation have gone on for almost two years and still there has been nothing says a lot.
Amazing that Trump supporters are unable to endure even the slightest criticism of him, even in an overall complimentary post. As I have said before, they claim that they like Trump's faults because they are necessary for effectiveness (they aren't - history has many polite but effective leaders - read up on it, dammit.), but it's actually that they revel in his meanness. They don't like that he "stands up" to liberals, they like that he kicks them, because they feel they are just getting back at people who have insulted them.
It may still work. He continues to do a good job of not being Hillary. Some of his instincts are good, and he seems to have a nice staying power in conflict. I applaud that, but feel no need to applaud everything just because his supporters become as insulting as liberals and like liberals, try to shout down or shame their opponents rather than discussing things with them.
The News Junkie: Why Are Americans Suddenly So Optimistic About The Future?
Suddenly? Actually, the data shows a gradual improvement since 2011. If you look more closely, the difference is almost entirely due to pessimism by Republicans during the Obama Administration. A majority of Democrats have continued to be optimistic.
The data shows the improvement was in spite of Obama, kiddiez.
I voted for Trump and I like him. He may be the smartest most competent president in the last 100 years. Considering all that he has done in just 15 months imagine what he could have done with a Republican congress (as opposed to a Rino congress) and support from his party.
But more than all that, the world is on fire right now. China is expanding militarily and economically all over the globe and I do not trust China's motive at all. Militant/terrorist Islam is not gone, not being destroyed and in fact more countries are dominated by Islam and dealing with terrorism today than 9 years ago. They are growing globally. Europe is sinking and will slowly be emasculated by Islam and eventually dominated by Islam. Our own country is overrun by illegal aliens, we don't even know how many, and fake refugees. The Democrat party has moved so far left that I fear them and what they will do if they ever gain power again. Our military was almost destroyed by a thousand cuts during the Obama years. Our debt has doubled twice since 2000 to an astronomical amount of money that we cannot pay back. The list of problems is long.
Trump may represent the last best chance to get our country back on track. He is doing a lot of good things. But I don't think he can do this alone. If the Republicans continue to not support him and the Democrats continue to obstruct I'm not sure even Trump can pull us out of this mess. Our liberal far left judges continue to try to sink the ship of state. The liberal media works overtime to destroy Trump and anyone who might be a conservative. It has all morphed into a fascist 1930's kind of left wing cabal opposing Democracy. I am worried for our republic and our people.
Ken, I too was a Cruz guy, still a big fan, and hope that he has been studying Trump intently. I keep hoping that the rest of the Republicans can see what's possible when you stand on your hind legs, but for the most part they don't seem to even remotely be catching on.
Be your own man, do what you think is right based on your principles and promises, and don't give a damn what "they" think because they're not going to like you anyway because you have an (R) after your name. Tell them to pound sand if they don't like it.
In seven years, after you've done with him, can we in the UK have him?
It wasn't that the frauds McCain, Bush, Romney lacked imagination, it was that they are members of the Uniparty. Okay, it was that they lacked imagination.
Yup. Meanwhile, rightists kill me. First the virtue-signalling about vast Trumpian social unseemliness and deepest moral sloth, then the comments criticizing the Uniparty globalists before him in passive terms. They were ineffective. Couldn't quite get the job done (whatever that was isn't said). Didn't quite have Trump's experience.
And below, Village Idiot's penetrating, proscribing intonations that supporters of the only guy to actually regard this nation as a nation since at least Reagan are vindictive and mean That surely their sensibilities are ruled by thuggery and political smashmouth.
Oh dear. That won't go over well on Sundays. Tisk.
Are you kidding me? The Uniparty is absolutely conscious, active globalism. One of their boys was a full-on cultural Marxist who conducted an eight year rein of terror aimed precisely at your lilting Sunday teas, and the others politically correct warriors against your nation's independence at best, with a side of kicking those lofty rightist ethics square in the teeth at worst. What do you think globalism is if not burning your vaunted cultural and social ethics right to the ground, typically while making faint mewling noises to them so you'll reelect them instead of those bad people with D's trailing their names?
But no; let's analyze our candidates for their fealty to a strict moral code straight out of some bizarre axis of sitcom teevee and churchy suit-and-tie decorum when we haven't taken an active role in politics of any consequence ever and couldn't identify a candidate by anything but his or her manicured retail personality if our Lincolns depended on it.
Losing is never dirtying your mind with aspects of your own survival while relying on the shrinking reinforcement of your inherited, imaginary genteelness and goodness. Rightists absolutely have it all over the left where virtue-signalling goes.
VI's posting just had me shaking my head. Who among the last group of Presidential wanna-bes was 'polite and effective'? The closest would have been Cruz - but I think he'd have lost gracefully too, or been steamrollered by the media.
Yes, I revel in 'Trump's Meanness', whatever that's supposed to mean. If being 'polite' means constantly being kicked in the nuts by our political elite, then to hell with that.
I am unconvinced that Middle America and Main Street would have a voice in a Cruz administration, though I am willing to reconsider. This is "make or break" matter for me. Admittedly, Cruz would be slightly more attractive in this regard than Jeb or Mitt.
