We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Re: Vote-buying is legal
Sadly, it's nothing new. It has been legal since politicians could tax one person and give that money to somebody who didn't earn it.
Vote buying is legal, just don't ask for an id. That would be racist!
L.A. Times climate science denial article instead shows the Times clearly denying well established climate science ... the Florida coastline is experiencing no acceleration in coastal sea level rise
The LA Times article claims that sea levels are rising, which is correct. The LA Times article doesn't claim that sea level rise is accelerating, but that acceleration is expected over the next century. Consequently, the criticism is fallacious.
Garrison Keillor- Frankly, I never found his show to be entertaining, homespun or not. Seemed designed to appeal to the semi-erudite public radio listener who would rather pretend to know about small-town life, rather than actually experience it.
U Colorado email forbidding critical thought on AGW- bad enough in principle, but supporting it with a lead of an absolute falsehood really seals the deal. Profs should have been fired.
Economic Freedom in the World Is Increasing - The United States ranks 16th in the world on economic freedom index
Not that Scandinavian countries are in the top quartile, showing that a strong safety net is compatible with robust markets.
Census data: How Incompetent Are The Mainstream Media?... The reported changes in income and poverty could not possibly be real if the GDP numbers were also real
Someone doesn't understand medians.
And America doesn't have a strong safety net? Give me a break. You people at the Zach Borg are such bores. Blaaa blaa socialism is great, blaa blaa blaa.
You know what else Scandinavian countries don't have? Shame of living off someone else.
Honesty: The Election’s Core Issue Since Clinton Declared Candidacy in 1808 ... Hillary Rodham Clinton once claimed she was named after explorer Sir Edmund Hillary.
Seriously? It's probably something her mother told her to encourage her to strive. And that's just the first example.
B Hammer: And America doesn't have a strong safety net?
Not as strong as most Scandinavian countries, but certainly stronger than in many countries. The point remains that it is possible to have a strong social safety net, as well as a robust market economy. Indeed, the richest large economies all have mixed systems.
Bidding Farewell to Garrison Keillor’s Church
Well, as you may know, "woebegone" is a synonym for "deplorable"
A robust market economy is a safety net.
You just don't understand economics....probably too much like physics.
THE FEDS NOW RUN A BUREAUCRACY THAT REGULATES SEX
Get some while you can. Remember what Milton Friedman said would happen if the government took to regulating the desert.
If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there'd be a shortage of sand.
Sea level has been rising slowly since the end of the mini ice age, as expected. That rate of rise hasn't increased even with the phony scare stories about AGW. The various groups pushing the AGW meme have indeed lied outright about the rate of sea rise and have distorted and altered the record to make it appear that sea level rise has increased, but it hasn't. The pro-AGW community has a record of lying about this and other 'facts' related to the AGW argument in an effort to bolster their claims of human caused climate change.
But the fact remains it has not increased and the ONLY claim that it will increase the rate of rise comes from the self serving computer models created by the very same organizations who have consistently lied and misrepresented the data for decades now. I point out that these claims of future increase in the rate of rise are not new and we have many examples from the recent past of specific predictions of sea level rise and disaster which have simply not happened. Virtually nothing the pro-AGW community has proposed. predicted and purported has been true. If the AGW community was betting at the race track with their own money based on this track record they would already be bankrupt. But in fact they are betting with our money and have committed fraud with public money and deserve to go to jail for these crimes.
DrTorch: A robust market economy is a safety net.
Robust markets are essential for economic prosperity, but don't constitute a social safety net. Again, the most successful economies are mixed economies, those which have robust market along with strong social safety nets.
GoneWithTheWind: Sea level has been rising slowly since the end of the mini ice age, as expected.
Yes, but the current rate of surface warming exceeds what is expected from those natural causes.
re Bidding Farewell to Garrison Keillor’s Church
I was briefly a regular listener to A Prairie Home Companion back in the early 80s. I always liked The News From Lake Woebegon, but the rest of the show mostly sucked.
His caricatures of small town life were generally pretty accurate in my view.
Which, if true, really should have become a cute in-joke with her mother once Hillary was educated enough to recognize the dates and capable subtracting 53 from 47 (Hillary! innumerate as well as incompetent). Even Snopes couldn't swallow the tale given that she never mentioned this origin story prior to her visit to Nepal in 1995 as well as the quote including the detail that her mother read an article on Sir Edmund while pregnant. No mention of her naming being used as encouragement then, or as far as I know, any time after even though 'breaking glass ceilings' has been a major theme of her campaigns.
More likely, as with dodging sniper fire in Bosnia and trying to enlist in the Marines during Vietnam, this is another falsehood concocted by an almost pathological liar with a dearth of actual accomplishments to promote.
You know when people really started to look at Trump? After the first primary debate last summer when Megyn Kelly unfairly targeted him with a non-political question. We all tuned in, interested to hear about policies or positions, instead we got Megyn lobbing her woman-hater bomb at Trump. She failed miserably. Viewers were angry. Trump's popularity started to climb from that moment.
So, by signaling to the public via interviews that almost all debate moderators are democrats, Trump is letting voters know that he is expecting unfair treatment, so keep your eyes peeled.
This will only help him on the debate stage. Any moderator who does a 'Megyn Kelly' or a 'Candy Crowley' will be dismisssed as helping Hillary and not being fair.
Can't wait to watch. I'm already certain Trump will be considered the winner.
Well stated and correct. The computer models are wrong and so these people have resorted to altering the past and future temperatures in an attempt to keep money flowing to them.

Oh, and Zach.... IRS docs show only 5.7% of Clinton Crime Family Foundation ill-gotten booty used for charitable purposes. And now we learn those fabulous drugs the CCFF contributed are weakened, watered down versions of real AIDS drugs.

Nashville Councilwoman: Deciding Who Sleeps in Your Home is a Privilege Bestowed by Government, Not a Right
Sounds like a percursor to moving third world savages into your home. I mean, if there weren't so many foreclosed on properties sitting empty.
Keep hearing radio commercials regarding uber and calling your congresscritter to pass legislation to allow you to drive people around in your car.
At this point in time, I am oposed to petitioning the illegitimate gubmint for permission to do anything.
In modern times, however, he said alligators face a threat that could hinder the scaly reptiles’ ability to thrive like nothing in their past — humans.
I like how they took a nice factual story and larded it up with BS. First, we will never be able to or even attempt to drain all of Florida or enough of the swamps, lakes, marshes and bayous surrounding the Gulf of Mexico to destroy the wild alligator through habitat destruction.
Second, people eat alligator...at restaurants...all over the U.S. In other words, we farm them. Anything we farm and eat will not go extinct.
Zach, go look at the government's own NOAA tide charts. "Sea level rise" is a total hoax. Sea level has been rising at the same rate for more than a century, since measurements began. It's a straight-line graph. In my area, the rate is .46 of a foot per hundred years.
That has been the rate since 1900. That's 5 1/2 inches per century. And yet you will have people tell you with a straight face that sea levels are going to rise 6-12 feet in the next 50 years. These are articles written by supposed "scientists." Here, even a 6 foot rise will take 2,000 years to achieve.
What the scientists are are phonies look to create work for themselves. Right now our city is proposing to establish a new Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency to give all these phonies jobs and create more problems for us. It will deal with, among other things, sea level rise.
The fact is people confuse sea level rise with erosion, which is certainly happening all the time because of the kinetic energy of the ocean. The climate changers play on that. But I have lived by the ocean my whole life and walk or jog by it daily, and I can tell you there has been no perceptible change since I was a kid on hardened lava or coral areas. Beaches are different, but that is erosion, tides and currents, and much of that is seasonal. Beaches disappear in the winter and come back in the summer.
the alligator population has exploded even with all the new encroachments into their territory.
I've seen umpteen pictures of gaters on people's front porches. Heck, they are all over disney, they can't keep them out.
B48: IRS docs show only 5.7% of Clinton Crime Family Foundation ill-gotten booty used for charitable purposes.
That is false. You are confusing charitable grants with charitable works. You're confusing charitable grants with charitable works. If you look at their audited filings, you will find charitable works under "program expenses". Program expenses are about 87% of spending.
Jim: go look at the government's own NOAA tide charts. "Sea level rise" is a total hoax.
It's a simple question of logic.
LA Times: Sea levels have risen and the rate of rise is expected to increase.
Watts: They're wrong because the rate of sea level rise has not accelerated.
As the LA Times article doesn't claim the rise currently exhibits acceleration, criticizing the article for saying that it does is called a straw man argument, a fallacy.
Natural causes are insufficient to explain the warming trend. The difference between what is expected of natural causes and the observed temperature increases fits what is expected of anthropogenic warming.
The Medieval warming period was far warmer and there were no SUV's or coal miners to blame. So where natural causes insufficient to explain that warming trend too???
GoneWithTheWind: The Medieval warming period was far warmer and there were no SUV's or coal miners to blame. So where natural causes insufficient to explain that warming trend too???
The evidence indicates that the Medieval Warming was due to increases in solar radiation, and a decrease in volcanic activity. While the global temperatures during Medieval Warming Period wasn't as warm as current global temperatures, changes to ocean currents resulted in significant warming in Western Europe. Meanwhile, anthropogenic warming is expected to continue.
Reconstructed Northern Hemisphere annual temperature during the last 2000 years
We have had 33 global warming cycles since the last ice age and a corresponding 32 global cooling periods too. Soon we will enter the next cyclical global cooling period. It could start tomorrow (there is evidence it has already begun) or it could start in a decade ot two decades or longer. One thing is sure there will be a natural global cooling cycle. All of them were the result of natural causes as expressed by the Milankovitch cycles. None of them have been caused by humans and the forces necessary are so great that it is unlikely that if everyone of the 7.2 billion humans on earth were to devote their time 24/7 to making it warmer or cooler that there would be zero measurable effect. The theory of AGW is a 'theory'. There is no proof, no evidence and when the data is examined and modeled there is no 'there' there. The ONLY way to get the models to show any AGW is to falsify the data are tweak the algorithms to make the model show the desired propagandized result. What AGW and the hype around it really is all about is the most massive redistribution of wealth and power in world history. Those who are invested in this scam cannot and will not give up the rewards are too great. Those who will will pay the grifters for this scam do not yet fully understand what is going on and are more or less complacent and in some case useful idiots for the cause. This entire scam has the markings of a carnival midway huckster trying to lure 'rubes' in to be fleeced. The rubes aren't yet fully aware of what is going on. Some are and more are everyday but not yet to the tipping point.
GoneWithTheWind: We have had 33 global warming cycles since the last ice age and a corresponding 32 global cooling periods too.
There are natural cyclical changes to climate. What will those climate scientists come up with next!
GoneWithTheWind: Soon we will enter the next cyclical global cooling period.
The next cooling period was expected to begin in the next several centuries, but anthropogenic warming is overwhelming the natural signal.
GoneWithTheWind: All of them were the result of natural causes as expressed by the Milankovitch cycles.
There are many drivers of climate change, which include Milankovitch cycles.
GoneWithTheWind: The theory of AGW is a 'theory'.
In science, a theory is a well-supported scientific explanation.
GoneWithTheWind: The ONLY way to get the models to show any AGW is to falsify the data are tweak the algorithms to make the model show the desired propagandized result.
Actually, global warming is a consequence of basic physics. If you increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the surface will warm while the upper atmosphere will cool. Solar warming does not have this dual effect.
