We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The New Year is still wet behind the ears but things are starting well for me. Like when you are tuning an engine and it has that slow frequency, just a whispering throb, and a nudge with the screwdriver and — ah, resonance. I see however that there is a lot of dissonance around me; I won’t add “cognitive” because most of it is subliminal. For a lot of folks New Year’s has always brought about the sense of fresh start, new beginning, promises. Like this one day is magical. We both know thinking like that ain’t worth a pincha coon shit.
I’ve ventured out for medical and culinary reasons and the eyes, the eyes say it all. People have the remnants of a holiday smile but it’s fading; they are hesitant and reluctant to do the simple things they’ve done all year; their eyes have this vague fright mode, like they feel something is moving around out there beyond the camp fire, circling in for the kill. You’ve worked short wave radios and the signals folks are giving off are not in harmony, not synched to any strong signal.
Alas, things will settle down and the masses will return to their bread and circuses. Actually that is a good thing. Keep the herd quiet, under control.
“I dunno; while you’re up get me another beer”.
I recall a recent Fox News interview of a young woman involved in student protests in favor of safe spaces and free tuition. Four of five of her statements began with, "I mean..." I would gladly nominate this one to the banishment list.
Ionization of the Earth's atmosphere by sunlight forms a complex, multilayered plasma environment within the Earth's magnetosphere, the innermost layers being the ionosphere and plasmasphere. The plasmasphere is believed to be embedded with cylindrical density structures (ducts) aligned along the Earth's magnetic field, but direct evidence for these remains scarce. Here we report the first direct wide-angle observation of an extensive array of field-aligned ducts bridging the upper ionosphere and inner plasmasphere, using a novel ground-based imaging technique. We establish their heights and motions by feature tracking and parallax analysis. The structures are strikingly organized, appearing as regularly spaced, alternating tubes of overdensities and underdensities strongly aligned with the Earth's magnetic field. These findings represent the first direct visual evidence for the existence of such structures.
Re: The theory about why prayers are answered (but rarely).
There's an old joke about the guy who dies and goes to heaven, meets God and asks Him: "Lord, I don't mean to complain, but for all the troubles in my life I turned to you in prayer and yet never once did I get what I asked for, never once did you ever answer a single one of my prayers. Why did you never answer my prayers?" And God smiles and replies, "But my child, I did answer all your prayers. I said 'No'".
Maybe if you think God's not answering your prayers it's just that He's giving you an answer you refuse to hear. Maybe He wants you to work things out for yourself.
