We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Smart drugs - I took lecithin and supplemented with some other concoction marketed under the trade name "Memory Booster" throughout law school. I'm certain it helped with short term retention and, especially, focus. I ceased taking them shortly after starting practice at my first job as I found the task focus to be too consuming. Transgender students: When I first heard this story I was sure it was comedy. It is, kinda! But seriously do the bureaucrats understand this transgendered person is a man with a penus and teen hormones (not to mention artificial hormones). Maybe one could argue that this decision won't harm the boy/girl transgender but who truly believes this won't harm the real girls in the school? Something is wrong with these bureaucrats. This is de facto proof that they should not have their jobs in government. No sane person can believe this is a good or smart or the correct decision on this issue. We need a law that forces bureaucrats and politicians out of office when they enstupid themsleves like this in public.
Re: Bill Gates says that capitalism cannot save us from climate change
It just goes to show you that being smart in one area doesn't make you smart in another. On the other hand, a more skeptical interpretation is that he already has his so it makes no difference to him what economic system we have. He's pretty insulated from the insanity he proposes, until things get really bad and society starts eating the rich.
It is time we have a serious bathroom/showerroom discussion. Exactly why do we have separate facilities?
The simplest solution is to stop calling it boys and girls, mens and womens, hombres and senioritas.
Instead, in these "modern" times, the most objective segregation is by penis and vagina. Gender (as now constructed) no longer is an issue. It is to accommodate either penises or vaginas that we install fixtures. It is whether one exposes a penis where only vaginas are allowed, or even a vagina where only penises are allowed that causes alarm. This solution also avoid any issues with children being exposed to penises or vaginas before parents decide or can't stop their curiosity.
We could do the segregation on sexual attraction but that get confusing as then we'd need a lot of rooms, one for heterosexual males, one for heterosexual females, one where a homosexual male and female could use at the same time and for the bisexuals, we'd need to give them a room by themselves.
So, just change the labels based on the objective criteria of penis or vagina. There would need some accommodation for the few who lost their penis but still want to use the penis room, but such should be limited to those who had a penis at one time.

I grew up in CA with a lot of minorities. My best friends were asians and hispanics. This means that a lot of my high school Facebook friends are looney-toon liberals, since they never left CA and don't know what 'normal' life is like outside of that culture.
However, I have 2 friends - one asian, one hispanic - who are conservatives. One is a total Tea Party type conservative. They both still live in CA. Anyway, I feel there is hope for asians and hispanics to join the conservative way of thinking.
We just need to win over a few at a time...progress will be made. I'm certain of it!
"Diversity" is just a club with which to beat the dominant (Western) culture over the head. We are supposed to stop doing, saying, or thinking all kinds of things so as not to offend others, but they never have to make adjustments so as not to offend the rest of us. Any offence that might be felt by anybody in Western culture is much less important than the offense somebody in another culture (including those who came here voluntarily) might feel. Most of the time, those claiming that a group is offended, are not even a member of that group!
Exactly. "Diversity" is only a good thing for western cultures. It is a calculated effort to destroy western culture. Only the willfully blind refuse to see it.
I am not sure why someone with a sexual psychosis gets special rights under federal law, especially when there is nothing in the federal law that says that.

State Department emails conflict with Clinton’s Benghazi testimony
Twenty-five years of brewing investigations, and what we have is some pretty weak tea.
Diversity is barbarism.
Unity is civilization. Even if the unity is only over equality before the law.
It's how it starts. A close family member in law enforcement started an investigation into the misuse of a city vehicle. When all was said and done, his investigation intersected with the FBI and two dozen state legislators were perp walked and made plea bargains.
Talk about a first world problem.
Fathers, just tell your daughters to get enough of the girls in the school together and beat the living hell out of the first boy (who cares what he thinks he is) to attempt to use the Ladies Convenience. If there are enough of you the school will be the one in trouble.

I ate your candy!
Jeeeez. Kids are weenies anymore.
My kids would have quietly start scheming revenge. Parents need to sleep sometime.
And it's not like when we were kids, when getting candy was rare. When mine were in elementary they brought home bags of candy and unhealthy snacks from events at school. And watched lots of movies. I guess that's over now that the first lunch-lady has taken over without anyone asking her to.
NOT getting candy is now trauma.
Cue "It's Too Darn Hot" from Kiss Me, Kate (Broadway version, not movie). Also, if this is true, why are there any large families between - say - the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn?
Let's see... She engineered the disaster that is Libya producing an opening for ISIS there. Did not take responsibility for the providing security for her good friend Chris (who didn't even have her email address - some friend). Lied to the family members of those who were killed - as well as the rest of us about how they were killed (possibly to cover up her ineptitude). Had her private email server set up to shield her from any scrutiny and government records regulations (as well as the State Department classification system) while exposing state secrets to hackers from Russia, China, and Iran as well as whole groups of people maintaining her server and the backups who did not have security clearances. She exposed herself as incompetent to determine what information is or should be classified. And lied about whether there was any classified information on her server (Oh! That's contradictory, isn't it? Maybe I was right in the first place and she really is too stupid to know what constitutes classified material!). And she got herself investigated by the FBI for possible criminal violations of law.
Yeah, I'd say that was weak tea. She sounds like a great candidate for president. The sad thing is that most Dems will vote for her anyway because honesty, competency, an protecting state secrets aren't important if you're a Democrat.
Only way to obtain perfect diversity is when everybody is equal.
My plan would be: no clothing other than gray jumpsuits;
Terry cloth slippers no distinction left and right;
Shaved head haircuts, no body jewelry or piercings or tattoos;
one world-wide language;
all motorized, mechanized machinery programmed by central terminal;
World-wide diet. Today is rice and fish day from London to Iowa to Guam, &c.
Alcohol and drugs only at secured relaxation sites, must blow sober to leave;
Religion practiced in controlled environments, alla samee;
No metallic objects may be owned by citizens;
Everybody is everybody else and vice versa;
That diverse enough for ya?
This should end well
German officials propose enslaving German youth to Islamic migrants
Okay, they actually call it compulsory service of only 1 year. Or they do a year in the Army.
Let's see, lots of German girls forced by the German government to service Islamic men. Yeah, that won't be an issue for the neo-national socialists.
Ach, dem Germans: either at your feet or at your throat.
Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer, pretty simple, eh?
"...in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.
It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.
Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation." Adolf Hitler
JK Brown: It's how it starts. A close family member in law enforcement started an investigation into the misuse of a city vehicle.
After a quarter century, the net result is that she's served in the Senate and as Secretary of State.
mudbug: Let's see... She engineered the disaster that is Libya producing an opening for ISIS there. Did not take responsibility for the providing security for her good friend Chris (who didn't even have her email address - some friend).
Most of your comment is the usual laundry list, but let's consider just this one. Clinton didn't engineer a disaster in Libya. The disaster was unfolding due to events within Libya and the broader Middle East. It's doubtful there were any good options, and thousands of civilians were in imminent danger.
As for security in Libya, Clinton has taken responsibility, but she never purported to be a security expert. Stevens was taking inordinate risks in order to help the Libyan people. It was a dangerous situation, and the State Department certainly made mistakes. Security experts thought it more important to use the available resources to secure the airport.
Returning to the original point, the so-called "email conflicts" do nothing to support a claim of wrongdoing on the part of Clinton.
The simple solution for the left and the right as it relates to Hillary's crimes or lack of crimes is to follow the law and do the investigation and prosecution just as though Hillary was not rich and has bought and sold most of the Democrat party. That is treat her like an ordinary citizen and get the left out of it. Go ahead with the prosecution (if crimes have been committed) and let the chips fall where they may. For the left to keep throwing up road blocks and interfering with justice makes the rest of us suspect she indeed has something to hide and committed crimes. Do the investigation, put it in front of a grand jury and prosecute if the facts demand it.
Hillary only said she takes responsibility for the security situation in Benghazi. That's meaningless. Hillary's "good friend Chris" made scores of requests for better security that were refused or ignored. Then when there was an effort to save Chris and those at the compound, they were told to stand down. What was Dame Hillary's response to that? Did she order a complete review of the failure there? Did heads roll? Not that I ever heard. She did nothing. She was too busy figuring out how to cover her ass.
The disaster in the broader Middle East, as you describe it, was the 'Arab Spring' that the Obama administration was cheering on. It was supposed to usher in a new democratic Middle East. They were as clueless about it and the Muslim Brotherhood as they've been about every foreign policy issue. As for Hillary's role in overthrowing Gadhafi, The Atlantic says:
Using contested intelligence, a powerful adviser urges a president to wage a war of choice against a dictator; makes a bellicose joke when he is killed; declares the operation a success; fails to plan for a power vacuum; and watches Islamists gain power. That describes Dick Cheney and the Iraq War—and Hillary Clinton and the war in Libya.http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/10/hillary-clinton-debate-libya/410437/ That it blames Cheney for allowing a power vacuum in Iraq just polishes its leftist bona fides. It was her operation.
And CNN says:
Once, Libya seemed set to stand as a triumphant test case of Hillary Clinton's vision on the smart application of U.S. power abroad.http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/08/politics/hillary-clinton-libya-election-2016/ She declared victory and then ignored it.
But the U.S.-led operation to avert genocide, which eventually led to the ouster of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi, left a political vacuum. It has since been exploited by groups like al Qaeda and ISIS that have identified lawless territory ripe for exploitation and a possible beachhead to launch terrorist attacks on Europe. And it has spawned a humanitarian crisis that has seen boatloads of refugees risk dangerous passage across the Mediterranean.
The emails clearly show she was lying when she told the public and the parents of those killed in Benghazi that she thought the attack was the result of a demonstration about a video.
GoneWithTheWind: The simple solution for the left and the right as it relates to Hillary's crimes or lack of crimes is to follow the law and do the investigation and prosecution just as though Hillary was not rich and has bought and sold most of the Democrat party.
That's not the goal, of course. As soon as Clinton is no longer a political threat, then the investigations will end.
mudbug: Hillary's "good friend Chris" made scores of requests for better security that were refused or ignored.
That's right. The security professionals deployed their resources to the airport. Stevens, meanwhile, was taking inordinate risks. Better security should have been provided. That's what the investigation showed. It didn't show malfeasance.
mudbug: Then when there was an effort to save Chris and those at the compound, they were told to stand down.
That's been debunked by multiple investigations. Turns out America doesn't have a magic military.
mudbug: The disaster in the broader Middle East, as you describe it, was the 'Arab Spring' that the Obama administration was cheering on.
Sure, but the Arab Spring was due to changes in the region, not to the Obama Administration.
mudbug: It was her operation.
There was little the U.S. could do. They intervened to prevent a genocide, but without troops on the ground, they were limited on what they could do.
Z: It didn't show malfeasance.
Why do you bring up malfeasance?? How about incompetence? Doesn't the State Department have the responsibility to protect its installations? It's ok that the "security experts" decided that defending the airport was more important than the lives of an ambassador and his team? So Hillary was ok with the security arrangements (or lack thereof) and the outcome because there was no malfeasance? What a gal!
Z: That's been debunked by multiple investigations.
The people who were there had a different view: http://www.businessinsider.com/cia-contractors-at-benghazi-speak-out-2014-12 http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/05/world/africa/new-book-says-cia-official-in-benghazi-held-up-rescue.html?_r=0
Z: Sure, but the Arab Spring was due to changes in the region, not to the Obama Administration.
I didn't say they had anything to do with the Arab Spring. I said they cheered it on.
Z: There was little the U.S. could do.
The articles I quoted say, the US played an active role in Libya, and nobody worried what to do after Qaddafi was gone.
mudbug: Doesn't the State Department have the responsibility to protect its installations?
Sure. However, the Secretary of State ultimately has to rely upon the procedures and institutional knowledge of the security forces. When those are at fault, it is important to understand the failure so as to avoid it in the future.
mudbug: It's ok that the "security experts" decided that defending the airport was more important than the lives of an ambassador and his team?
Protecting the airport was part of defending the lives of the ambassador and his team. That's how they evacuated.
mudbug: The people who were there had a different view
Your own citation indicates it was a decision made by the base chief to pause while trying to enlist local support in order to avoid putting more Americans in danger. The CIA contractors were interviewed on Fox News, saying "I assumed they were trying to coordinate us to link up with 17 February, which is the local militia." They have made it clear that the decision was made without malice by those on the ground, and it certainly wasn't a conspiracy from on high to let Americans die.
mudbug: The articles I quoted say, the US played an active role in Libya, and nobody worried what to do after Qaddafi was gone.
That's why Stevens was taking such risks, and why he had such credibility among the Libyan people. What did you think should have been done? Another Iraq War? Ignore the possibility of genocide?
These are reasonable questions to ask, but making it into a dogfight about Clinton is just politics, not policy.
I think that you truly believe that. That is Hillary is clean as the driven snow and the only problem is those rascally Republicans trying to lynch her. But you would have to be stupid to believe that. Hmmmm...
GoneWithTheWind: I think that you truly believe that. That is Hillary is clean as the driven snow and the only problem is those rascally Republicans trying to lynch her.
No. We view Clinton as a hard-nosed left-of-center politician, and that Republicans will continue to degrade the political process in order to bring her down. Once she is no longer a political threat, Republicans will no longer care.
Security was requested and denied - this at a time when all the other Western diplomats and NGOs were evacuated because of the danger. The result was four people, including an ambassador, were killed. That should be have at least cost someone his job. There were no repercussions for this failure and more than that, Hillary tried to cover up the cause of the attack so that it would look like it came from a random demonstration and the administration couldn't be held responsible for such a freak occurance. That anybody is not troubled by the performance of Hillary and the security experts is beyond comprehension.
On top of all that, the backdrop was that of the aftermath of an operation the US participated in (we can't say led because the US doesn't lead anywhere now a days) with the goal of toppling the head of Libya. The planning of it was so inept that there was no thought of what to do after he was gone. And possible genocide? First if you're going to do something about a situation, you just don't quit when you're tired of it if the job isn't finished. During the Iraq war, the phrase, "You break it, you own it" was bandied about to describe Bush's responsibility. Hillary and Obama had that same responsibility. They (helped) break it so it is their job to help put it back together. Second, we have genocide going on now and nobody in the administration is even thinking of doing anything about it.
This is not about politics, it is about policy (What was their Libya policy? Was the outcome a success?), honesty (Hillary has not been forthcoming about anything from her secret UNSECURED email server that was maintained by personnel who did not have security clearances, to the reason for the attack, to her responsibility in the whole affair), intent (was what Hillary and Obama did to further US national goals in the region to support democratic reforms, peace, and support for our allies in the region), and competence (everything about the Libya affair was an unmitigated disaster). The administration tried to handle a policy disaster as a political issue - lie about it. As I said before, if this is what passes as Presidential performance under pressure for Democrats (like that 3 am phone call she said she was ready for), then they are in trouble. If she is elected, we are all in trouble.
mudbug: Security was requested and denied - this at a time when all the other Western diplomats and NGOs were evacuated because of the danger.
The rescue team was delayed because the station head wanted to get local military support. It was a SNAFU.
mudbug: "You break it, you own it" was bandied about to describe Bush's responsibility. Hillary and Obama had that same responsibility.
Sure they did. However, the available options were limited.
You never answered. What did you think should have been done? Another Iraq War? Ignore the possibility of genocide?
mudbug: [i]This is not about politics, it is about policy [/i
The U.S. always seems to resort to force as a preferred option. Clinton is certainly an offender in this regard, though hardly on the level of the Iraq War.
Z: The rescue team was delayed...
That is non responsive. The issue was security requested by Hillary's good friend Chris Stevens (who was such a good friend that he didn't even have her email address).
Z: ... the available options were limited
The option was not to start something you weren't going to finish. Do you think they were really worried about genocide? What evidence do you have? The administration has paid zero attention to genocide since then, they have even refused intelligence to those who want to battle it (Egypt and Jordan - both run by moderate Muslims, the kind we are supposed to like - but they are falling over themselves to return money to a murderous regime that foments terror, kills US servicemen, and wants to build a nuclear bomb).
Even if you don't agree with what or how W did in Iraq, you have to admit that in spite of what John Edwards said, he had a plan. He started a war and then he attempted to leave it a better place when it was done. Hillary had none of that concern. She either couldn't be bothered or didn't know enough to be.
mudbug: The issue was security requested by Hillary's good friend Chris Stevens
To which we responded "the Secretary of State ultimately has to rely upon the procedures and institutional knowledge of the security forces. When those are at fault, it is important to understand the failure so as to avoid it in the future."
mudbug: The option was not to start something you weren't going to finish.
Non-interference was one option. But the situation was sufficiently chaotic as to warrant minimal intervention without actually occupying the country.
mudbug: Even if you don't agree with what or how W did in Iraq, you have to admit that in spite of what John Edwards said, he had a plan.
They had a fantasy.
Once again you missed the nail and hit the woodwork. It is impossible for you to be truthful about Hillary or for that matter anyone on the left and their agenda. Hillary has spent her entire life emulating the Mafia. She has broken laws, stolen money, extorted people and organizations and sold government favors and secrets for her entire life. When I was young in the 50's the Mafia was in gambling and prostitution and various small crimes but would not sell drugs. They had honor of a sort. Not Hillary, she makes the Mafia look good. The list of her crimes is long and I doubt you could even acknowledge even one of them. Worse even though you know what I say is true you would stay up late at night thinking of how you could excuse her crimes. That is the difference between you and an honest person.
GoneWithTheWind: Hillary has spent her entire life emulating the Mafia. She has broken laws, stolen money, extorted people and organizations and sold government favors and secrets for her entire life.
Yeah. Vince Foster was going to spill the beans, so Hillary fed him to the fishes.
Z: When those are at fault, it is important to understand the failure so as to avoid it in the future.
So what did Dame Hillary do about this failure? Did she hold anyone accountable for their incredibly bad decisions that led to the death of four Americans? Did she institute reforms? She did nothing... I take that back, she lied to cover it up.
Z: Non-interference was one option.
I didn't imply that nothing should be done. I said that if you're going to start a regime change, you need to be ready for the consequences. She was uninterested in those consequences.
Z: They had a fantasy.
Maybe. Hillary didn't even have that.
mudbug: So what did Dame Hillary do about this failure?
The accountability board found security was “grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place.” Four in the State Department were named, placed on administrative leave, and reassigned. Twenty-nine changes to security processes were recommended. All but three have been implemented. That's how it works.
mudbug: I said that if you're going to start a regime change, you need to be ready for the consequences.
Almost as vague as the Iraq War plan.
Z: Almost as vague as the Iraq War plan.
Getting back to the original issue - the 'weak tea' of the Benghazi investigations, we now have the potential of criminality: http://freebeacon.com/politics/clinton-signed-nda-laying-out-criminal-penalties-for-mishandling-of-classified-info/
I understand that your standard for criminality is whether the DOJ will prosecute, which will never happen, but criminality seems to follow these Clintons wherever they go.
Nice diversion from the issues.
But in a way very interesting. Someone did indeed kill Vince Foster and someone ransacked his office and removed incriminating evidence and that evidence incriminated Hillary and Bill. Hmmmmmm!
