We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Well, he really doesn't want people to start thinking there is something fishy about him.
Well, the founders had dual thoughts on tariffs. First that no taxes should be levied without the consent of those paying (at least through their representatives) and that the taxes should be used for the common benefit.
The first limits high taxes as who consents to such. And the latter negates "redistribution" or the taking from some for the benefit of others.
You'll need two of those wild turkeys if you are having guests.
They don't have nearly the meat on them that domestic turkeys do.
That's why domestic poultry fall over dead when they've reached maximum capacity @6 months of age. Their skeletons aren't strong enough to support that large breast and their cardiovascular system craps out. (this goes for capons and broiler chickens too)
*I know this because one year we raised turkeys and had so many of them survive and we didn't get them all butchered in the right time frame.
We still have people comment on our 50lb dressed turkeys.
We've also raised wild turkeys after hatching their eggs in an incubator.

Which prompts me to give a hurrah for my hometown's Volunteer Fire Department. A summer chicken barbecue helped fund it.
Why Our Toddler Started Doing Chores as Soon as He Could Walk. I was raised that way. Raised mine that way. Mine didn't raise theirs that way (theirs are adults now). You can tell when they visit. (Yes I'm old and curmudgeonly, but that doesn't change their not helping with dishes, not picking up after themselves....)
re wild Turkey
I have a momma turkey and 8 or 9 juveniles in the yard as I write this.

Usually I am more than happy to point out Obama's faults. However, my husband and I both noted that handling a fish like that will make you stink all day. And Obama was not there to be a fisherman for the day, he was there to meet-and-greet and then move on somewhere else. Honestly, I don't blame him for wearing the gloves. In fact, my bet is the people fishing with him probably recommended he wear them so he didn't smell like dead salmon all day.
RE: WHAT TEMPERS THE STEEL OF AN INFANTRY UNIT
in a statement about otherwise-physically qualified women in line units, Gen. Newbold states about men and women:
The same youthful ingredients produce unacceptable behavior in the pristine and low pressure environments of boarding schools, academic institutions, and cubicle farms. Truth be told, in later stages of life these traits also lead to humiliating interactions on Capitol Hill or in the White House. Why, then, do we suppose that sexual dynamics — or mere perceptions thereof — among the most libido laden age cohort in humans, in the basest of environs, will not degrade the nearly spiritual glue that enables the infantry to achieve the illogical and endure the unendurable?
if this is a primary reason for keeping women out of combat roles, this is a failure of leadership and training.
Maintaining a high rating in the Public Protection Classification Program can be tough for a volunteer company!
The number of personnel needed for safe response to a fire or rescue incident is determined by the incident and not by the number of incidents per year.
The city near me recently attempted to consolidate staffing and equipment into fewer stations, and discovered that the increased insurance costs on their own buildings and facilities ate up all the savings. On my last trip I saw that the closed stations are open again.
I don't think the article is up to the usual AEI standards, because as a non-firefighter layman interested in where my local taxes go and how my insurance rates are calculated I know that a) there are market-related pressures having as-strong or stronger effect than unions and lobbying on the number of professional firefighters, and b) the absolute number of firefighers is little changed, but as the hours of training required of them increases, the proportion of full-timers to volunteers also increases.
RE Get Big Money Out of Law?
Wouldn’t assigning defense counsel on a lottery system, with all defenders public defenders, be more “fair” than the current system under which the rich get the kid gloves and the poor get the iron fist?
more bullshit from the uninformed "roving correspondent".
1. choice of defense counsel is a constitutional right.
2. the government has unlimited resources to prosecute, public defenders are already swamped with overwork and the best lawyers go where the money is.
3. private attorneys already get dragooned into representing defendants, there are courts where if there is no conflicts of interest panel attorneys available, you do not want to catch the eye of the judge or you'll be working a case for $100/hr.
4. see No. 1.
another dumb fantasy. supporting the patently unconstitutional military coup because someone thinks the govt is "acting unconstitutionally".
so the question is who is going to lead this fantasy coup?
from Mark Boatner's Civil War Dictionary
officers from northern states who stayed loyal: all but one (one served neither Union nor confederacy)
officers from southern states who stayed loyal: 50%
regular enlisted who stayed loyal: 100%
I'd say that he is definitely the one in the picture with the bigger fish to fry.
As usual with the day's links, there are four or five items that are worthy of censure or even impeachment (if this were Britain, a Vote of No Confidence). Damage is being done daily and I now think that this nation will never really recover.
My wife liked to fish but didn't like to bait the hooks or clean the fish. No problem, I was happy to do that for her. But then when we got home I got all the kitty love! That pissed her off. (still didn't clean the fish ;-})
"43% of Republicans could imagine supporting a military coup in the United States"
A military coup would be the nail in the coffin of your country's entire 239-year political experiment.
You'd become just another sad-sack banana republic overnight.
"...that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
Lincoln would be rolling in his grave.
This is a measure of the frustration and dissatisfaction that citizens have with their government. Hanging your hat on a coup misses the point. The poll could have easily asked if they would support storming congress with pitchforks and hangmans nooses. The take away is that a lot of citizens are pissed and our politicians should pay attention and try to correct past mistakes. It would be smarter than simply making flip retorts.
It is not the primary reason, at all, but it is an extremely valid and pertinent one. In simpler terms it would only complicate an already intense situation, close combat. As well as taking training time, leadership time, away from much more important tasks.
If women wish to serve in combat, let them, in their own units. Though I suspect you'd be hard pressed to find the numbers for a company's worth, let alone a battalion/regiment.
On second thought, you know what. You might restrain yourself from commenting on a subject for which you know nothing, nothing at all. Unless you surprise with the fact that you've done close ground combat. Then we'll talk.
on third thought, you know what, you are angry, yet naive in the ways of the internet. so pay attention, young padawan.
I don't play the whose is bigger game with smatterings of electrons on an internet board because its a waste of time and because you'd lose, all the time.
but I know you served, because your name is "served". who else would call himself "served" unless he "served". you think that gives you some credibility, having a name like "served". but it doesn't, nor does whatever quals you'll rattle off in response. on the MF Betting Board, I've predicted specific things you'll claim you did or are. The over/under is five. don't take it personally, Sgt. Rock Slaughter of the Imperial Space Marines (Provisional).
anyway, tell us about your close combat experience in a mixed sex unit, with emphasis on why you or other youngsters can't be trusted around women, which is the point of Gen. Newbold's article. do your jargon research, take your time.
thanks for playing.
notice something about the gummint-ate-my-homework conspiracy hobbyists. in their eyes, the average soldier goes from being a jack booted thug ready and willing to take your guns and herd you into FEMA camps until the day of his or her separation, when he or she instantly transforms into a We The People True American Patriot, itching to pistol whip the jack booted thugs with the second amendment.
You would have to be stupid or intentionally ignorant to have not noticed that our government has transformed itself into repressing and working against the will of the citizens. It is the norm now for our various federal departments and courts to write regulations and pass laws that a super majority of citizens are opposed to. The good and solid citizens of the middle class have become the enemy and are now just a source for funding the federal and state government. The constitution has become a laughing stock as more and more judges find here-to-fore unknown and unwritten "rights" for some special interest group the government wants to cultivate while at the same time trampling on clearly written constitutional rights. There is a high level of dissatisfaction amongst the Hoi polloi and it is growing. The "free press" that was supposed to inform the people (as in we the people) what the government was doing is in full cover up mode. Many common crimes go unreported in the news because the wrong group committed them against the non-favored class. Much of the fraud waste and abuse by government either goes unreported by the "free press" or if reported is misreported and smoothed over to be more palatable. People in fly-over country are starting to notice and are not happy.
when was this imaginary golden age of We The Peopleism? when Washington was full of Mr. Smiths and the Press was full of crusaders? that wasn't a rhetorical question. what year to you want to roll the calendar back to?
I married my wife twice. For our 20th anniversary we took our vows again and I gave her a ring and we went on a honeymoon. THAT is what I want our government to do. Take the vows again:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of ______ of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
And than start abiding by that oath. Cut the federal bureaucracy to about 1/4th of what it is today and cut the federal budget/taxes to 1/4th as well. Get out of our business, protect our borders, enforce the laws. To the Supreme Court; stop making law, interpret the constitution and favor original intent rather than social engineering.
Let me offer a good examle of how our politicians are giving us the finger: In my state our legislature passed a law requiring all private firearm sales to require a background check with some serious penalties for failing to do so. They did it in spite of the fact a majority of citizens do not want it. BUT, and her comes the middle finger, they used a legal trick of the legislature that makes it impossible for this law to be overturned by a citizen inititive vote. They did this to make sure we citizens couldn't interfere with their elite ruling class asshole decrees.
I'm curious, what state are you in?
