We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

then a picture showing that the Keystone pipeline already exists and showing the proposed XL extension
So whats the fuss about? Its just one more
"Article makes no sense to me"
"sense" as in "comprehensibility" or "topic"? If you're looking for understanding, the left is not your friend...
It's odd that it never gets mentioned in those anti-Keystone articles that right now the stuff is getting transported by not so environmentally friendly railroads all owned by major Democrat donor Warren Buffett.
Actually I guess it really isn't that odd at all.
Interesting addition to the "Once Thought Extinct" article:
Note that the "sylvatic plague" that National Geographic admits is transferable to humans. But then when an entity considers humans to be invasive species, infecting them with plague is not an issue...
I also thought the article didn't seem to see the irony in the fact that one of the reasons the ferret population was struggling is that its diet is almost exclusively prairie dogs whose population is also dwindling at times... because ferrets?
With regard to the "rest of the country". Those of us who live west of the Missouri have a growing contempt for you folks in "the east". After all--you control the largest media corporations (NYT, WA PO,CBS, NBC, ABC). You control the majority of our "market opportunity(stock, bond, banking). You ignore or belittle our architectural contributions--yet you steal the ideas. You ignore or belittle our technology creations--yet, you steal the patents. You ignore or belittle our major hospitals and their superior services--yet you continue to hold for that you antiquated and overcrowded hospitals are "the best". I could go on and on--but, you would ignore these comments also!
Somehow you sound like a Big Crapple hive dweller striving for humor...
See what I mean ! And, then you respond like that--accusing me of being somewhat less than yourself. That is a true example of how you folks think about "the rest of us"!
"No reason for the Keystone Pipeline to be built"--
That sounds like an argument that should be addressed to the people who propose to spend their own money to build it. Our system is not supposed to require businessmen to persuade other people that there's a good reason to do what they're going to spend their own money to do, unless it's actually illegal.
So much by rail that it's keeping crops from being shipped. More food price increase due to Leftist energy policy.
Clayton B. Reid: Climatologist: 30-Year Cold Spell Strikes Earth
September capped the warmest twelve months on record.
Jeff Dunetz: What the mainstream media wont tell you about global warming: But instead of debating whether or not the global warming hypotheses is a valid threat to the Earth, the media starts with the premise that the theory is real and anybody who contests global warming is the equivalent of people who don’t believe the holocaust actually happened, they are called deniers.
Didn't know that scientific facts were determined by debates in the media.
Jeff Dunetz: The Global Warming Pause has lasted 18 years and one month.
September capped the warmest twelve months on record.
Jeff Dunetz: Antarctic Sea Ice is at record levels and the Arctic ice cap has seen record growth.
Arctic sea ice extent has been decreasing at about 13% per decade. Antarctic sea ice extent has been increasing by about 5% per decade even though the area is warming. This latter effect is thought to be due to the melting of land ice causing a drop in salinity in the nearby oceans, along with changes in wind patterns.
Jeff Dunetz: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is not a pollutant
Anything can be a pollutant depending on concentration and effect.
Jeff Dunetz: There is not ONE climate computer model that has accurately connected CO2 to climate change.
While the overall heat in the Earth's surface is increasing, it is distributed chaotically through the system. This is very hard to predict, but it doesn't change that the overall heat is increasing.
Jeff Dunetz: Even with the relatively high levels there is very little CO2 in the atmosphere.
That's immaterial. Monatomic and homonuclear diatomic molecules are virtually unaffected by infrared energy; consequently, nitrogen, oxygen and argon are not greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases, those that absorb and emit infrared radiation, include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone, each with its own thermal footprint. Carbon dioxide constitutes about a fourth of the greenhouse effect. Small changes can have a significant effect on global mean surface temperature.
Jeff Dunetz: If you believe what people like Al Gore the polar ice caps should have melted by now
That's a misquote of Gore.
Jeff Dunetz: You are more likely to see the tooth fairy or a unicorn than a 97% consensus of scientists believing that there is man-made global warming.
Numerous studies have shown there is a strong scientific consensus. That doesn't necessarily mean they are correct, but it's prudent to consider the implications of their findings.
Jeff Dunetz: I changed my mind
Yes, there are a few scientists who reject the consensus, but they have not published any research that undermines the consensus. Generally, the closer scientists are to having a specialty to climate science, the more likely they are to support the consensus.
Jeff Dunetz: When I took Earth Science in college 38 years ago, the professor explained that the scientific consensus was we are heading toward an ice age.
There was a never a consensus about global cooling. There are two countervailing anthropogenic influences. Particulates cool the surface, greenhouse gases warm it. Most scientists quickly determined that greenhouse gases would predominate over the long term, even if nothing was done about particulate pollution.
Jeff Dunetz: Droughts have not increased.
There is some evidence that droughts are aggravated by climate change, but it is still difficult to make a direct connection.
Jeff Dunetz: Polar Bears are alive and well and not dying out.
In fact, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, many populations of polar bears are under threat.
Jeff Dunetz: No Increase In Hurricanes
There is conflicting evidence concerning hurricanes.
As someone from "the East" who has little or no time for some of the standard Eastern Establishment nonsense, I suppose I should take offense at your words. You've lumped me in with a group I care little about, let alone spend time with.
Since my roots are not NYC-based, and I'm closer to rural PA than anyplace else, I'm still "Eastern". But I have a great respect for, and enjoyment of, the rest of the country.
The people you are referring to are the urban echo chamber dwellers. I disagree with your diagnosis, sorry. But I understand where it comes from.
Now I'm reminded of why I found comments at MF so agonizing thanks to some who hog the space.
Z: Didn't know that scientific facts were determined by debates in the media.
Or course they aren't. They are determined by consensus as in 'The science is settled', right? In actuality, science is never 'settled'. There are still changes being made to as basic a concept as gravity.
Z: Anything can be a pollutant depending on concentration and effect.
Right and the concentration of C02 is growing but not as high as it has been in the past and its effect is to benefit plant life.
Z: That's a misquote of Gore. (WRT the claim that polar ice caps could disappear during some summer months by now)
What Gore did was quote scientists who said that to support his contention that 'the earth had a temperature'. He might as well have said it himself.
Z: There was a never a consensus about global cooling. There are two countervailing anthropogenic influences. Particulates cool the surface, greenhouse gases warm it. Most scientists quickly determined that greenhouse gases would predominate over the long term, even if nothing was done about particulate pollution.
I remember how it was the big worry in the scientific community back in the late '60s. Science hadn't evolved to taking a vote on whether a theory was proven or not back then like we do now.
Z: There is some evidence that droughts are aggravated by climate change, but it is still difficult to make a direct connection.
The EPA blames 'Climate Change' (http://www.epa.gov/climatestudents/impacts/signs/droughts.html) as does Al Gore. The EPA will write regulations that impact us all based on what they think, regardless of what the science is.
Z: There is conflicting evidence concerning hurricanes.
In other words Al Gore and the rest of the AGW crowd were wrong.
"September capped the warmest twelve months on record."
That's not true. Our own government, the NOAA, NASA and EPA are neck deep in lies and have conspired to change the real data and make up new data to support the fraud that is AGW. They have consistently "adjusted" prior years temperature data down and adjusted current and recent years temperature data upwards. The graphs of this data when place side by side is extrodinary. The fact that our government organizations are lying to us apparently being co-opted by socialist politics of AGW is distressing. But what is much worse is that they do it in your face even when they know the truth is there for all to see. They are seemingy unafraid to lie to our face. I fear that we really have no choice now but to tear down these mega-bureaucracies by force if necessary. They aren't just failing to serve us well they have gone full rouge and are conspiring to destroy us. Nothing less then an uprising will be needed to throw out these entrenced bureaucrats and politicans who are robbing us blind. Think about the fact that the EPA is passing onerous regulations where there is no provable benefit and the EPA insists on hiding the data and the science behind their decisions. Have you had enough yet? You are being grubered by the EPA, by NASA by NOAA and by your president. They think you are too stupid to understand that they are lying to yu while picking yur pocket.
GoneWithTheWind: Our own government, the NOAA, NASA and EPA are neck deep in lies and have conspired to change the real data and make up new data to support the fraud that is AGW.
A conspiracy that includes scientists from multiple countries, various cultures, under different political systems, all working together to make up data. Sure. That's believable.
"Numerous studies have shown there is a strong scientific consensus."
Now that's persuasive.
What's the mystery? They have in common a strong desire to exert more control and to advance redistributionist economic schemes, as well as the lure of a whole lot of money. It's not as though they accidentally happened on the story line they're pursuing together.
