We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The Ukraine: Who cares? Russia is a crappy, deteriorating third-world country with a bit of oil and with Czarist imperial delusions. Not our problem. If Europe cares, let them put on their big boy pants and do whatever they want. Start a European war. Last I heard, the Ukraine was not one of the United States.
Israel? They can handle things themselves. Their battles will never end just as in biblical days.
China? They want to be a big deal again. Well, they are, sort-of. They own most of the US debt, sadly. But that's our fault. If they want to be a big deal, it's ok with me. Why anybody would chose to live there is beyond me. Horrible, charmless place of desolation, with too many people and the stupid, paranoid, autocratic government they deserve. To each his own.
These sorts of things are not "crises," they are just ordinary life on planet earth. The "American Imperium" isn't over - it never really existed. Go ahead, try a round of golf - and tell me why I am wrong not to be hysterical. Trouble, conflict, and war is the way of the world.
I am going fishing now, happy to be a rebel American.

Moi aussi, except,
We need Persian Gulf oil. We still import a lot of oil, almost half of what we use. If ISIS controls the oil, they control us. So, I would spend blood for oil. Their blood. I favor nukes, nerve gas and anthrax.
As to Europe, as Ambassador Nuland said, "Ef 'em." NATO is actually a threat to US security, and we should get out while we can. Otherwise, we will get sucked into the war that Rasmussen and the other Euro-lunatics are fomenting. Putin is the good guy there.
Sure...isolationism...kept us out of that last European fracas.
Your life without Muslims?
You do know they live here right?
Like the 29 who dived airplanes into buildings.
The Religion of Peace doesn't do coexist very well.
"...deteriorating third-world country with a bit of oil, nuclear weapons and with Czarist imperial delusions." FTFY
This is something like holding up a cross in front of Satan. When he keeps coming hold up a larger cross. That should work .....
When someone declares war upon you, just ignore them they will go away...
If you are "with Obama on these things", then can you count on him "keeping the barbarians away from you"? And most Middle Easterners are not barbarian but are overwhelmed by them. Your characterization is incredibly ignorant, and reflects the common ignorance of your other comments. They would be a stupid, silly childish rant if they weren't so dangerous. They are a formula for the isolation of the US and its eventual fall, which is where Obama is taking us. If you don't like the extremists in D.C. under Obama, just wait until there are so many more accomodationists (at best) and active overlords.
-- I used to think Maggies Farm was a sane blog, but such posts as this seriously undermine that.
Walked home from the grocery store carrying my Glock. Saw the cute little kid from across the street with his mom. They were getting the crap beaten out of them by three leather-clad bikers. It was clear they were going to rape and kill them.
So I made sure my Glock was secure in its holster, and quickly walked past.
Mom and kid shouldn't walk outside if they can't defend themselves. Those biker skells don't ever bother ME.
And that's what counts.
To me, this post sounds like "We should not impose our way of thinking on others.". And I agree 100%.
How would we react if China started pouring money, arms, troops, and Chinese CIA guys into our country because they didn't think our Constitution was up to their standards of government ?
Me, I'd be behind a bush, lining up my sight picture...
Your scenario should be amended. Instead, the bikers are attacking someone 1,000 miles from you. Now, it's clearly your responsibility to intervene?
In today's world of international threats and actions, self-protection does not stop at the border. That doesn't mean go anywhere all the time, but it does mean taking out real threats to our security. Real threats to our security does not have to wait to be energetically dealt with, and shouldn't, until already here and it's too late, or wait until the threat gets so large and dangerous that it was fairly reliably foreseen and could have been taken out or contained earlier at far less costs and risks. We can argue about which threats are real dangers but not that there aren't any or aren't any worth bothering about, or just asserting that a poorly informed opinion of escapism merits serious consideration versus overwhelming evidence and expertise.
This attitude is all well and good if you are Sweden or Switzerland. Let someone else take care of it and eat drink and be merry. But for better or worse we are the king of the mountain and simply refusing to play the game won't stop the other players from attempting to push us off. China is pouring money into arms, troops and a Chinese CIA? Why? Because they want to help the Christians being slaughtered around the world? No. Because they intend to be the next king of the mountain. They are by subterfuge and by open acts expanding their sphere of influence and power. The Russians are doing the same. As for the barbarians, they have their own plans and they are implementingthem everywhere. There are at least two dozen countries around the world were Islam is fighting a war and winning. So we do what? Sit on our hands and continue to cut the defense budget to the bone? We wait until the plane is about to fly into the 82nd floor of one of our skyscrapers before we become concerned? The terrorists are trying to get nuclear weapons! Imagine a nuclear bomb going off in NY City. Perhaps multiple simultaneous nuclear bombs in strategic cities around our country would convince you we cannot bury our heads in the sand. It absolutely will happen. Our choice is to make an effort to stop it, to take the fight to them or to wait until they take it to us. Singing kumbaya isn't a strategy or a defense. The clock is ticking; you may not be interested in war but war is interested in you.
Just got this article forwarded from a friend in the California hills there, and laughed long and hard...
(I need to go fishing too! Before water freezes over!)
Then I read some of the comments here, and of course, all this "shit" is far more serious and dangerous than Any politician, anywhere (especially in Scandihoofia) cares to admit to. They are "afraid" - already!
"Can't we all be, you know, Just Friends, you know, and love each other, you know, smoke a joint, and mellow out - you know - like --- back when??"
All good points. And, yes, "a poorly informed opinion of escapism" shouldn't merit serious consideration.
However, today there's plenty of well informed opinion on the merits of no mindlessly intervening everywhere. Our absurd nation-building exercises in Iraq and Afghanistan are good examples of mindless intervention. The burden of proof has shifted to those whose poorly informed opinion of intervention is the current default opinion. Our meddling in Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Libya, Syria and Ukraine served no clear national interest of the U.S. The entire world would now love to go back to the status quo ante in Ukraine that our meth-addled, foreign policy geniuses were so eager to disrupt.
For starters, the Europeans -- the shameless freeloaders on our post-1945 dime -- should step up to the plate and take care of problems in their backyard. U.S. troops to Ukraine? The demonisation of Russia? Absurd. Childish.
It's society's responsibility to intervene. Meaning, it's the duty of each and every one of us people, anywhere in the world.
"He's closer - let him do it!" has some validity, but at the end of the day, if no one intervenes, we've all failed.
"meth-addled, foreign policy geniuses" you say.
That pretty well establishes the amount of credence to be given to your view and epitomizes that "a poorly informed opinion of escapism" does not merit serious consideration.
What makes the Muslims different in this day and age as opposed to previous such groups or the Muslims in different times is that they have a lot more money available to them in the form of oil. That makes them a much more serious threat outside their own borders than before.
