We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I think he's a bit of a curmudgeon. I was on an NRO cruise with him a few years ago and he was not interested in any conversation; none at all. Mark Steyn, Jonah Goldberg, Mitt Romney all very gracious. Of course, Romney was running for office.
I will give you that. However, I am judging him on his own words, examples, arguments. I don't want to cherry pick, but since he did, so will I.
Civilization Seems to Be Losing
Popular culture is likewise anti-civilizational. Does anyone believe that Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, and Lady Gaga are updates to Glenn Miller, jazz, Bob Dylan and the Beatles? Even in the bimbo mode, Marilyn Monroe had an aura that Ms. Kardashian and Ms. Hilton lack. Teens wearing bobby socks and jeans have transmogrified to strange creatures in our midst with head-to -toe tattoos and piercings as if we copied Papua New Guinea rather than it us. Why the superficial skin-deep desire to revert to the premodern? When I walk in some American malls and soak in the fashion, I am reminded of National Geographic tribal photos of the 1950s.
Lady Gaga does a fine duet with Tony Bennett on the standard The lady is a tramp, and if West is a sign of our Civilisation's imminent collapse, what about the vastly more influential former Beatle John Lennon's commie/flying dolphin inspired Imagine, ranked by Rolling Stone mag as the third bestest song evah. I know he mentioned the Beatles, so consider the subtle chord changes and sublime, morally uplifting lyrics in Why don't we do it in the road.
If he doesn't like how teens dress or tats, he should get over it. They didn't like Elvis or James Dean's attitude either.
And what the hell's wrong with Papua New Guinea?
But, he's an Totally Qualified Academic. I'm just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.
