We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

"Beer Domesticated Man"
"The United States has three times the income inequality rate of the Post-Communist Slovak Republic. But do you really want to live in the Slovak Republic...?"
they make far better beer than the US ever will...
"Behind the photo: Saigon execution. South Vietnamese officer executes a Viet Cong prisoner"
In other words it was not the preplanned execution of a liberal freedom fighting faery that the left has portrayed it to be for decades?
The shock, the horror (and everyone with a grain of brain tissue knew that long ago of course).
The legality of the Saigon execution is kind of hazy. According to the laws of war, in a war zone a hearing is required to determine if a prisoner was acting as a spy or saboteur. Once that is established, summary execution is completely legal.
The VC bastard is clearly out of uniform and was caught red-handed committing an act of Sabotage. The South Vietnamese General certainly had the authority to hold a hearing. Did he or another officer? No telling.
A foreign military officer behind enemy lines caught out of uniform is AFAIK considered a saboteur under international law and not granted the same rights and privileges as a POW.
Same goes for insurgents, both foreign nationals and citizens.
And this guy was not VC, he was an NVA infiltrator and agitator...
Maybe the general who shot him should/could have been arrested and tried under South Vietnamese civil law for murder, but I seriously doubt he would ever have been convicted for killing an enemy infiltrator known to have been responsible for the acts this guy was guilty of.
"they make far better beer than the US ever will..."
WRONG! The US craft beer makers are now the best in the world, and the most creative. Slovakia is more inclined to wine than beer anyway, unlike the Czech Republic, which is just the opposite, but is not any longer top of the heap in lager quality.
A colleague is Slovak-born immigrant to America, and a fervent fan of the many amazing small breweries in just the Northeast, as well as his occasional travel to Colorado and the Pacific Northwest.
I've never had cable, so I haven't seen the program, but I do enjoy clips from the show and watching their interviews. Just because the left ticks me off on so many issues, I've signed a petition on the behalf or Mr. Robertson and think I'll buy their DVD. Certainly won't watch or invest in anything A&E produces as all knew what the Robertson's were about when they were signed. You can't have it both ways.
Good luck to the Duck Dynasty. May your message last longer than the nonsense supported by A&E.
Ah, the ol' Silent Night as "evil incarnate" kerfuffle. This happened in my children's elementary school years ago (they are both well finished with graduate degrees).
In our case they were removing the song from the program entirely. One of the moms QUICKLY organized a counter-protest and had the school principle and district superintendent deluged with calls to leave Silent Night on the program.
The end solution was to sing Silent Night in Swedish and call it cultural diversity.
It's arrogance to think that with the right combination of words and money, a deal can be found for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict (Kerry is not the only to display that arrogance). Everybody wants to step right past the fact that the first condition of the Palestinians is the destruction of the state of Israel (after that, the goal of Jewish genocide). How do you negotiate with someone who starts from the position that you should be killed? Why would you even try?
I think there is also an additional factor in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. We saw it when Arafat turned down the deal that Bill Clinton brokered between him and Israel. The problem is that those in power prefer to retain their power then to bring peace to the Middle East. If they can continue to play the Palestinians against the Jews they can remain in power forever. Don't forget that when Arafat died he was a billionaire. Until the Palestinians get a statesman as a leader instead of a dictator they will continue to suffer. WHat is really sad is that if they had accepted peace decades ago they could have turned the desert into a garden just as the Jews did. The billions spent on trying to help the Palestinians has been wasted.
My theory is, the Israelis should act as as they have been accused of acting (ruthless killers), and bomb the HQs and subQs of Hamas, PLO, you name it, and show the Palis how bad it can be, Just to get their attention, and then ask about peace talks.
My theory being, ya gotta be cruel to be kind.
Yeah. Ya gotta get their attention before you can be kind to them.
