We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I've always wanted to go to the Hagia Sophia but now it won't matter because I doubt they will let Christians in. While I dislike them turning it back into a mosque they have every right too as part of the right of conquest.
BD you don't have any pics you could post? And maybe the Triple Walls of Constantinople that held back the Islamic hordes for a thousand years?
I do have pics, but on another, old computer. Would take me a while to find and transfer them. It's pronounced "Aya Sophia" and it already had been turned into a mosque when the Ottomans came.
...something is fundamentally wrong with our
climate models. ‘ Ž to the rescue.
He's busy; I'm covering for him today. Monotonic increase, troposphere, deep ocean heat sink, peer review, and a couple of hair-splits. Q.E.D.
Later on I can talk about Constitutional penumbras, if anyone's interested.
Wiki: From the date of its construction in 537 until 1453, the Hagia Sophia served as an Eastern Orthodox cathedral and seat of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 1453 until 1931. It was then secularized and opened as a museum in 1935.
For some reason I couldn't get the link to open. Hadn't it been converted into a mosque before, and then - uh- decommissioned and turned into a museum? So now it's back to a mosque?
Five years? We'll be halfway to our DOOOOOOOMMMMMMM by then, as we all know "if things don't change in 10 years it will be too late!", even though that was said 15-20 years ago...
Is it possible? Do you think that maybe the O's speech to this group of young people about the evils of "christian separatism" was really an exercise of his part of a contract? His responsibility to make certain that this new generation of graduates walk the line is clear in this speech. The only question is who is making this demand? Corporate America who demands a docile public, or the unions/socialists who also demand a dumbed down docile public?
I say corporate America because they do not want any real challenge to their present off shore income strategies (gotta help those poor people in Bangladesh by giving them jobs for 30 cents a day). And, you already know why the union/socialists want complete control over every generation. Is this where collaboration takes us? Sure looks like those kids coming out of that auditorium would follow him anywhere--that is his real job isn't it?
Once more the muhammadan hordes unveil and we all behold barbarism totally devoid of any quality suggesting capacity of living in civilized world.
...San Francisco’s rent control and anti-landlord housing laws.... The kind of people they want to have living in SF can afford it. That's the whole idea.
Oh no! Does that mean we'll have to allow Canadians into the US who are fleeing the glacier's?

Hagia Sophia and the Parthenon vied for 'world's most beautiful building' among those not so enamored of the Taj Mahal, which was named after a bluesy-rootsy singer of the 20th century, a century which was being prophesied around 1500 to come some 500 years thither to.
The two great spoliations of Hagia Sophia were at the hands of Venetian navy transported Celtic (tho called 'Latin' in history) Templars in the Fourth Crusade (fairness demands mention, 22 years earlier had been)
... and then a quarter-millennium later not by Schism but by an altogether different Monotheism in the person of the proto-Ottoman Seljuk Turks, under Mehmet II, conqueror of Constantinople, re-namer of this holy city of the Eastern Roman Empire and capital of the Chalcedonian (Greek Orthodox) peoples, as "Istanbul".
Another quarter-millennium later, in among other things a re-balancing of accounts with the old building, the Venetians and the Turks decided to throw a war over at the Parthenon and blow the rival beauty into the shell-type structure known as "Smithereens" --thus elevating Hagia Sophia into the number one spot by acclamation.
"Hagia Sophia" contrary to popular belief is not named after the person
... but rather refers to the second being of the Holy Trinity, the "Logos", come to earth as Jesus.
The translation then, says wiki is "The Holy Wisdom of God".
The Fourth Crusade left so much dangling, exposed and aggravated without recompense so many schisms and blood libels and honor debts, there at the rough boundary of the first and second thousand years, and lately so much of what is happening here at the rough boundary of the second and third thousand years, that one could say that the only reason it isn't seen as Biblical is that it's happening after the first edition's time-line.
Think Progress = Censorship. The Koch Bros., Oh NOLOOOOOOOO)OOOOOOOOO!
Sooooo, that green green grass of home ain't GREEN because those EEEEEEVILE corporate farmers are......
Buddy--that was a really nice 'piece'! Thank you. What we American need to get back into our being is this:
freedom, liberty, quality of life comes with a terrible challenge: to keep our streets and people free we must MUST acknowledge what the "REAL"situation is--allowing 12 million people into our country who are abandoning their own country because they fear the war lords--does not I REPEAT DOES NOT equal an individual's seeking of a better quality of life! We have to acknowledge that this immigration program will guarantee a diminished quality of life for all of us -- not because your average Mexican is a bad person, but rather because they are in the habit of being abused by monsters and did not, will not, and can not stand up to abuse. We must ACKNOWLEDGE what it is they are running from and what qualities of courage they are bringing to this country. I know many of them. They are sweet. They are accommodating. The regret the condition of their nation--but, as individuals they did NOTHING to stand up against the corruption that has been Mexico for 100 years. How in the hell are they going to help us--even if they do vote Republican?
Sorry Buddy, I know how you feel about this--but we have not asked the right questions. Best,
AP, thanks --an old old friend of mine is Greelk Orthodox and got me interested in that building a long time ago. It's always astonishing to me that the sensibilities of such beauty and excellence could be so exalted in a time where the peoples were just routinely slaughtering each other like livestock.
I'm with you on the gang of eight bill --you're right --it's perverse --like affirmative action, it will do the opposite of what it is promising us it will do.
I signed Ted Cruz' online petition to abolish the IRS --hope he gets it done, so their new commando squads don't come out here and shoot up the place.
Take a look at him at the 'Audit the IRS' rally last Wednesday on the West Lawn. I'm afraid Mr. Rubio's bright star is getting hard to see in the Cruz illumination.
to allow Canadians into the US who are fleeing the glacier's?
Thought buddy might jump on this one so I've been awaiting his visit. But, alas, seems he's been a "busy buddy".
"I'm afraid Mr. Rubio's bright star is getting hard to see"
Mr. Rubio's shooting star has fallen to earth. It's just a tiny undistinguished, dark rock now.
