We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It seems that she means well but she somehow still thinks there is something the government can do to solve this problem. You cannot help someone by doing for them that which they should do for themselves. Wealth redistribution, quotas, subsidies, and other forms government "free stuff" makes it worse. Sadly the left never gets it and thinks that when it all fails it is because they didn't do enough. If only they had destroyed one more rich person with higher taxes or promoted one more minority above their skill level or subsidized something/anything it would have worked. Nest time they get power they will tax and spend more and THEN it will work...
It astounds me how economically illiterate (and or undisciplined) people are. I hear about people with $40K to over $100K in credit card debt! Amazing!
A neighbor once told me that he never worries about the price of a car, it's only if he can meet the payments!
So few people plan ahead. I just don't understand it. I blame some of it on the giverment programs that often subsidize failure and poor judgement. But there's more to it than that. Maybe it's because society has been trying ignore financial topics for fear of being money centered. And maybe some misremembered the quote in the Bible about money, rather than the love of it, being the root of all evil.
