We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

That's the Lefty mantra this week, re firearms. So let's ban cars, which are far more deadly. Or urban gangs and urban drug gangs, who do, by far, most of the killing in the US with illegally-possessed handguns.
Mind you, I am entirely in favor of banning firearms, or any other weapons including baseball bats, from violent criminals and the criminally insane. However, that is already the law. Crims ignore laws, obviously, worldwide. Criminalizing the law-abiding seems one more example of A nation formed by geniuses and run by idiots.
A rational government would want the law-abiding armed, and the crims disarmed. I happen to believe that our government wants me disarmed. Me, who have been burglarized four times, held up at gunpoint once, threatened with death once, have had an armed home invader running through the area recently, and have never harmed anybody who did not deserve it - and never with a firearm but only with words.
When government and police give up guns, and government officials and celebrities and newspaper offices give up their firearm protection, and security guards begin carrying squirtguns, and the crims give up their guns and we establish the Peaceable Kingdom where the lion lies down with the lamb, then we can talk.
Until then, Maggie's HQ is defended with legal citizen arms just as Mayor Bloomberg and the President are. That's how honest country folk think, who cannot afford security guards and have no gendarmes for many miles. In the country, one must be one's own gendarme. That's the American way. I grew up with guns around. Just tools, like all the others. We kept a .22 revolver in the kitchen drawer with the pliers and screwdrivers. My Mom shot a roaming Copperhead with it one time, when a little one was outdoors in a basinette.
Eve should have been armed.

An HK USP! I carry the USP45F as my duty side arm! As Andy Griffith would say, "Goood gun".
It does seem to appear that they are either naive or understand that gun control is for the law abiding. If so that means only the crims and polititions will be armed. In technical writing we would get rid of tge redundancy, so rephrasing, only the crims would be armed.
Since the SCOTUS has already settled the issue of the wording of the Second Amendment regarding "militias", the right of the people to bear arms that's guaranteed by the Bill of rights is actually BROADER than the protections that are afforded by the First Amendment. The First Amendment prohibits Congress from abridging the freedom of speech, religion, press, and assembly, but is silent on actions by the executive branch or by the states. The Second Amendment is all-inclusive: it says that the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed. Period. That means by ANYBODY---by the Congress, by the President, or by the states. Any action taken by Obama that "infringes" that right--which encompasses a broad range of possible executive orders he might choose to issue---would have to be struck down by the courts. Of course, given CJ Roberts' cowardice and betrayal of the Constitution in his ObamaCare opinion, there's no telling what this Supreme Court would do if faced with a lawsuit that seeks to overturn an executive order by Comrade Obama.
You're right, BD. Let me add that when seconds count, the police are only minutes away!
It is time to become Activist not Pacifist. The facts bare out a different indication than that which is being touted. If we could only align the facts side by side, then reason would bare a logical out come.
Our sign above the door should read: Mr. Bad Guy, the Second Amendment won't protect you here.
The second to the last thing that I would want to do is to take someone's life (would be very hard to atone). The first thing on the list is that someone be allowed to take mine (or family member). Though Pierce Morgan states gun deaths are down in the UK (I travel there monthly), actually violent crime is WAY up. The method that people hurt each other changed, true, but not the evil in there heart.
Another reason to ban cars: The Newtown shooter drove to his crime.
It's such a strange reasoning process. We can certainly make a dent in a social problem with laws whenever we identify behavior that lots of law-abiding people engage in, and conclude that it leads to terrible results for most of them. Easy: outlaw the behavior, and most of the people who were doing it are likely to stop. But I'm mystified by the tactic of associating a routine action with a huge number of legal activities and a very few illegal ones, then concluding that outlawing the action will prevent the crimes. It reminds me of the old joke about milk being a gateway drug: milk leads to harder stuff.
I like the story. Storing the revolver with the other tools seems appropriate - that's all it is.
re "Me, who have been burglarized four times, held up at gunpoint once, threatened with death once, have had an armed home invader running through the area recently,"
EGAD! And you LIKE living back there?
I would be looking for a safer place to live.
The First Amendment prohibits Congress from abridging the freedom of speech, religion, press, and assembly, but is silent on actions by the executive branch or by the states.
this isn't accurate. the first amendment (and the second, and the rest of the bill of rights) is incorporated by the 14th amendment and applies to states regardless of the original language.
while the president is charged with enforcement of laws made by congress he has no independent authority to make them, see Article 2. so the text of the 1A or 2A wouldn't have to state that "the president shall not" because the president can not. Executive orders and federal regulations are ultimately based on some congressional authority.
if you disagree, you should cite Article 2 or one of the USSC decisions.
and, of course, the second amendment, like any other constitutional right, is not unlimited -- no constitutional right ever has been.
Feebs and me thought it all happened right before you stomped in mad as hell and wrote the sentence
Wanna know what Levrentiy Beria would've done, were he Obama?
What's happening now is the Basel-based NWO, continuing to enjoy what it dug up under Solomon's Temple in 1111, is reaping the full harvest of 20 years of pumping SSRIs and gun-murder intertainment into a generation of lost boys (fathers outbid for their families) in order to subdue the heretic north American continent.
These wind-up toys of boys are currently fullfilling the probabilities on cue --but it may not be enough to subdue the protestant southern white male (defender of the schismatics).
If not enough, the next step is the genius of Beria --more horrid tragedy school shootings, even as Basel dissembles re obvious countermoves, until it has dawned on all that the real deal is this: Accept this govt as is, even though it is the source of the misery, because only it can stop the misery.
Yes, it can stop it because it is doing it in the first place.
The genius of Beria: 'Yes, the people will learn that, but the final stages of taking absolute control occur when they no longer care, when they will just want an end to the misery, and will come to the Party as it alone can end it.'
oh, that's crazy talk --uh-huh, sho it is, i'm coo koo --ee-bdee bdee bdee, gnung gnung
"But," you say, "even if it's all true, the genie is out of the bottle now, not even Lavrentiy Beria can stop it now."
True --but he or his current soul-mates can damn sure --with just a wink and a nod to the MSM --make it all go away, send the genie back into the lamp, regardless.
Take a look at Drudge right now --Hollywood's timing on the great hallelujah they're bestowing on the Lincoln movie, right at inauguration time. The Lincoln iconography and Logos already pervading the urban inner cities --Lincoln, freer of the slaves --Lincoln, whose house-divided speech stated that the house will not fall, but the division will. Lincoln, whose election started the secession. Lincoln, who maneuvered the confederates to --stupidly --start the shooting.
The movie, the Oscars, the inauguration, the going-white-hot gun and debt ceiling fights, all coming to a head together --this is an accident?
Our only chance is to hold fast and never ever do what they don't say they want us to do.
If Gen PT Beauregard had simply allowed the Yankee flotilla to off-load at the Sumter wharf, already tyhree or four months past the date of South Carolina's secession, we might've gotten into many other messes over the years but we wouldn't have gotten in THIS one --which BTW a defeated Robert E Lee in his postwar correspondence with Lord Acton perfectly predicted would become of the new centralized Federal colossus.
--er, didn't mean to disparage the North in favor of the South --that same southern gun culturew --first sent Obama-reelin April 20 2010 with the BP 'safety lapse', was to a large extent Tory in the 1776 revolution while the Yankees whupped THAT particular tyrant King.
Also didn't mean to short-shrift the slavery issue as the confederacy's irretrievable corruption --i meant to assay the results of a war issue gone to fighting --the war politics that get a war started. Also didn't mean to impugn the RCs witht the heretic stuff --everyone has their identity group problem they're stuck with --we have the Klan, Jews have the Rothschilds, Blacks have the racist preacher club, the RCs have the heretic-minded splinter Jesuits, and the Maggie's Yankees have Ichabod Crane
But sewriously, Drudge has added, Lincoln's Bible will be used to swear Obama, and the State of the Union speech will be on Lincoln's birthday.
It's getting thick --either the 2nd Inaugural ''better angels, bind up wpounds'' Lincoln is being invoked, or the Lincoln war-fightyer who (>cough
Oops, cut off my ending and spell-checker.
either the 2nd Inaugural ''better angels, bind up wounds'' Lincoln is being invoked, or the Lincoln war-fighter who (>cough
did it AGAin, ok twice is enough to lose my grand corn-clusion, ah retires, suh, and yields th' flo.
Ahhh, somebody was looking out for me last night --thank you --i think i got Lincoln and Obama mixed up in my addle brain, just like i was supposed to --then when General Joe Teethgumsey "War is Sell" Biden burned Atlanta, i swore an oat and took down from the farplace my two-handed broad sordid. Shoulda just decided to take off my boots and jacket
