We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Our post about hoarders the other day had me thinking about overeating. Overeating is hoarding fat cells. Once you create new fat cells, you can never get rid of them.
Odd and dysfunctional behavioral symptoms are all ways of dealing with uncomfortable internal states. Most people have at least one character defect or wiring defect which creates some sort of discomfort or uneasiness.
For some people, food is a center of existence and thus becomes a way of coping with being oneself, fending off boredom and a sense of emptiness - all of the cliches. In my line of work, we term this solution "orality." It works, in prosperous societies, and harms no-one but oneself.
For starters, this lady needs a physical job and needs to get out of the house. Her life is too easy, undemanding, and too dull. She'll end up on Disability, if she isn't already. Her son seems like a good kid, and wisely doesn't try to fix her. She has given up on life by taking on the victim role - she is a "victim of a food addiction."
Our parents in WW2 were given cigarettes in their rations when overseas; they were told, "OK, guys, smoke 'em if you got 'em!". Of course, those who didn't smoke were rounded up for the s**t details or castigated by peers/colleagues. So there was pressure to smoke. Today, however, there's no excuse for taking up a hazardous endeavor like smoking cigarettes (and hasn't really been since Luther Terry announced its deleterious effects in ~1964). Likewise with overeating. No one can justify this type of gross behavior. While this woman is sick (probably mentally as well as physically), her son is **enabling** her behavior. Boy, does he need some education, along the lines of AlAnon. And one is moved to wonder what her source of income is. Social Security? One thing is certain: under obamacare she will probably get the same consideration as someone with a REAL health problem, like a car accident victim, and be taking up resources needed elsewhere. Undoubtedly she needs counseling and some obvious mandatory restrictions upon her intake. She is a gross violation of conservation of mass: what is going in is obviously much greater than what is going out. And from a Newton's First Law perspective: an object at rest tends to remain at rest.
dhmosquito, I don't believe she will get the same treatment under Obamacare as rationing of health care will leave the terminally larda** to fend for themselves.
The explanation is simply a life without discipline, see it, wolf it down ,grow obscenely obese, die, be carted to the morgue with a forklift. Only in America!
I rise from my "Lurker" status in defense of this poor creature. As the Dr said she is in a chemical state where her body is telling her the wrong things to eat, and she is mentally ill-equipped to deny. The way she speaks about food calming her makes me think this also has an aspect of anxiety disorder mixed in. I don't hold any of this against the son, if she didn't have him it could be lots worse. In every way government involvement in health care will make this worse. The fix for this woman is a private clinic that is holistic and advanced is dealing with this type of illness. Which cant ever develop because of all the bull crap in the way of business development.
There comes a point at which a person who is functioning as an adult will move heaven and earth to bring about improvement. A real adult does not care how hard something is, when the stakes are literally life and death.
She should enter a radical weight-loss program, arranged so that once the hungries set in, backing out is physically impossible.
