Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

A Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and all the best in 2011 to the crew at MF. You provide a generous forum for discussing whatever and some very thought-provoking experiences in so many fields. Our day is much enriched by you and your commentators. Life-long learning at it's best. Cheers to all!
I've noticed a continuing trend with the "progressives": the crowing and cheering for Venezuela becomes exponentially more muted each time their dear Bolivaran comrade Hugo comes up with something new and nuttier.
Some "progressive" sites have adopted the Stalinesque methodology of simply omitting any mention of him at all. So much more convenient to ignore the topic completely, eh? It sure beats the back-breaking flip-flops any Chávez apologist must perform daily now. From your avid fan up here in the Dominion of Canada, I wish you all:
Bon réveillon et joyeux Noël à tous ! Re: the Haiti lynching article:
"Haiti's real problem is cultural." Well, that -- and a distinct lack of foresight. When I read this yesterday I was left with one burning question: "We have counted 40 people dead in Grand'Anse department alone, where people are attacking natural healers they accuse of cholera-linked witchcraft," said communications ministry official Moise Fritz Evens. "The victims - most of them voodoo priests - were stoned or hacked with machetes before being burned in the street," added the official. Okay, so they're killing all the voodoo priests who cursed the island with their black magic. But if they kill all the voodoo priests, who's going to LIFT the curse?! Like I said, a distinctive lack of foresight on the islanders' part. Re: the article on wind power, here's your schadenfreudelicious article of the day: Environmental groups sue to block wind farm Because, as everyone knows, there simply aren't enough rodents in the world. May the krewe at Maggie's and all the posters and lurkers have the merriest of all Christmases and the Happiest of all New Years!
You too, mudbug! And to all the rest of maggiesfarmers and commenters, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Hang in there, my dears... next year has got to be better than this one. The grown-ups have marshaled their forces and good changes are on the way.
i used to sing The Holly and the Ivy on Christmas Eve. Bird Dog ... do you have access to a good recording of that? It's lovely... Marianne I am a recent retiree from the aviation industry, a mechanic, and can vouch for the pilots comments on the TSA theatre at all the airports. Virtually every mechanic has tools in his toolbox that would give TSA a heart attack. I have shears in my toolbox for cutting composite fabric that have about 8 inch blades and enough sharp knives to arm a dozen people. Not only that but we used to make Bowie knives for retiree gifts from material in the structures shop. Not much in the way of "weopons" that can not be made in the machine shop and structure shops. Every time they start talking security we would just smile.

Dr. M, the article talks about BATS, not rats. To the best of my taxonomical knowledge, the only flying rodents are to be found in cartoons. Ya know, Mighty Mouse and all that. Rats and mice: Order Rodenta. Bats: Order Chiroptera. Maybe there is a Monty Python hybrid, Battus Rattus. Or was that Rattus Battus.[Genus /species] Here is the definitive scientific study on wind turbine damages to birds and bats- and Mighty Mouse:Environmental Impacts of Wind-Energy Projects.
